Students want to be a part of the solution in
#EmergencyMedicine
!!! My hope is that the students applying understand EM and the problems facing the field so that they can show up ready to get great clinical training and work to be an asset.

@AAEMRSA
@aaeminfo
WINNER: Emergency Medicine.
The big story of Match Week 2023 was the 500+ EM positions available in the SOAP, caused by a rapid drop in EM applicants.
But this year, EM applicants are up 33% (driven mainly by increases in DO and IMG applicants).
@hivalee22
Licensing exams shouldn’t be the metric used for competitiveness. It should all be based on sub is and clinical performance. I recognize that would require a complete change in our system.
As a student applying

in
#Match2025
I would LOVE to get help from people who have done it. I know it takes time and effort on your end and I'm so grateful for those willing to do it!
Navigating the Match on your own can be daunting!
Our goal is to connect med students who plan on entering the

Worth reading this from
@TakeMedBack
. Students need to be aware of the challenges facing not only
#EM
but medicine as a whole. Educate yourselves so you can maximize the next 40+ years of your career. Disregarding or failing to understand will lead to dissatisfaction!
@jaskMS3
Reality is if licensing exams exist only to show competency for a license and not ability then they should all be P/F and criteria for matching should move more to Sub Is etc for selection. This would also reduce workload for programs and students.
This is the narrative students NEED to be hearing about
#EmergencyMedicine
We know there are problems. But there is so much good in EM. It'll take great students to help alter course. We want to be part of the solution!!!
Starting PGY 26 and I'm right witcha, my brotha 👊🏻
Time to reverse this BS narrative about how horrible EM is. Plenty of people like me and
@Rick_Pescatore
out there who are thankful for the privilege of being an emergency physician

This thread by Dr.

The recovery of EM is the long game. Not much will change the short term. Hopefully EM orgs as well as
@ABEMCert
and the ACGME can work towards real solutions. EM is a fantastic field but students need to be aware of its problems rather than go in blind.
Dr. Chien was instrumental in helping me prepare to apply medical school and helped my love for EM grow. He helped make the ED my favorite place and showed how to be a leader. Grateful there are physicians willing to stand up to PE in support of their patients and profession.
#medtwitter
- remember when medical director Jeff Chien MD was fired for advocating for safe staffing and hospital workers staged a walk-out in protest of

? Now a local democratic group has won the contract - and the former med Dir is there

100%. As students it'll be important for us to make sure we understand the problems facing EM and how that will impact us during and after residency. Sure, it will drive some students away. But the students who choose EM can work to be part of the solution and can effect change.
The work

It changed my life.

A massive issue in medicine that ALL students need to be aware of. The impact it can and will have on training and career is a reality that all need to consider when choosing a specialty. Glad you wrote this up.
Come hang out with

EM is hurting. There are a lot of problems due to internal mistakes and external factors/influence. It's important that students fully understand that or they are setting themselves up to be let down. However, it is a fantastic & noble field with exceptional people!!! Work to do!
@action_ap
Sharing true feelings is how you mitigate long term problems. If coresidents, students etc can be open it will fester and cause problems. Medical training is hard, being able to openly share without fear of judgement or retribution is HUGE!

Watching all the 4s do this makes me so stoked for my cohort. Love watching you guys get to do what you’ve been dreaming and praying for for the better part of a decade.

Work for the sake of work and accomplishment does not lead to happiness or fulfillment. It’s not the years in your life but the life in your years!

I get that.
I just try and focus on my tasks for the day and trust the process. Really helped for Step 1 and I feel good moving forward now!

I 100% feel this. Came to med school set on EM, went through and am still in a surgery phase a little bit, but my absolute LOVE of the ED is there stronger than ever.
@UrAvgMedStudent
Dying? Not a chance. No specialty can provide on demand acute/emergency care like an EP. Going through a rough patch? Sure but that is a far cry from dying.
#EM
is an essential part of the ENTIRE healthcare system and no one does it better.

Wild to hear that! Didn’t realize it was such tough pickings. Why do you think that is? That being said you are beyond qualified and whatever program you match with will hit the jackpot! Pulling for you Katy!
@Hamp_The_Doc
@jordanlukens
The numbers mask the problems but this is definitely not the fantastic recovery a cursory glance gives. Getting "back" will take about a decade I imagine, if it ever gets "back". Students planning on
#EM
need to educate themselves and advocate.
@AAEMRSA
@aaeminfo

Could it be the future? Sure. Should it be the future? Only if we want to dumb medicine down more and make it worse for everyone but those profiting at the top.

@aaeminfo
I think thing we need to recognize as students and remember in residency is that THE EP IS THE COMMODITY. They are the specialist and no one does it better. It is paramount we realize the value we [will] provide & ensure we utilize that for ourselves,specialty patients!!!
@maddy25e
You are more than capable. It’s a test written by humans. You can crush it. Also don’t resource overload. Sticking to a few resources was so helpful for my plan and sanity!
@ValeriaOrtega
Everything that’s been said above regarding scholarships and grants to present research etc.
Also worth seeing if your school will fund you. Some schools will pay if you are presenting or have money set aside for students to attend at least one during med school.

If you approach every low acuity call with the mindset of training for the high acuity patient, you will perform when it matters.
If you blow off the "BS calls" don't be surprised when you can't perform on the sick patient.
It's all practice and there's no substitute for reps
