Now that the
#Match2023
dust has settled, we have celebrated our newly matched M4s, and as
@CORD_EM

#CORDAA23
gets started, I wanted to put together some thoughts on the
#EM

, highlight some facts, and answer some questions. Buckle in folks, and let’s get started! 🧵

Love that these types of comments always come from a male (typically white) who likely never gets their title of “doctor” questioned by patients.

Me,

program.
Spoiler: I work here now. 💁🏻♀️
Your yearly reminder that it does, in fact, all work out in the end. 🥲🫶🏻❤️

My candidate for 2020 is
@PeteButtigieg
. Last night, I volunteered for his campaign in CB. Listening to Pete talk about his inclusive plans for all Americans left me inspired. He truly thinks about how policy will benefit us all as a united country, not just a single few.
Hey
#EMBound
students,
The number of “Ms. Karl,” email responses I’ve received from audition rotation invites is 🥴.
Pro-tip: Make sure you read the email signature of those sending you messages/emails.
Thanks,
Dr. Karl
YOU GUYS!!!
I am SO EXCITED to welcome our new interns to
@hcmcEM
tomorrow. I just saw the list and what absolute ROCKSTARS. Like, I am just beside myself how lucky we are to have them all on our team! 😭🙏🏻🥰

So… if the chair cannot fulfill their duties, does an RN become the chair of
@NBMEnow
- the National Board of Medical Examiners for student *physicians*? 👀
The
@NBMEnow
just announced their Board of Directors for 2023.
The new Vice Chair is a professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at Seton Hall University.
🔥HOT OFF THE PRESS🔥
#EMbound
students,
@CORD_EM
just released their recommendations for interview season: “Our recommendation is to utilize a virtual interview format with the opportunity for in-person visits later in the season.”

👋🏻 Hey
#EMbound
#MedTwitter
,
Let’s break ⬇️ the new
#SLOE
2.0
🔁 to share with your fellow EM-bound medical students.
*Note* this is not anyone’s actual SLOE. This is a template of the actual SLOE that is filled out for educational purposes.
Let’s get this 🧵 started:
To think of others in such a personally stressful time is the mark of a poised leader with fierce grit, and
@A_Sapp12
will continue to be a force nationally for emergency medicine. Let’s get her matched!
#SOAP2024
#EMbound
The SOAP can be a stressful time, especially for couples. Thank you for sharing your journey, Alexandra - we are hopeful for an outcome that works for you! 🙏🏼
#ACEPnation
- Do you have any helpful suggestions for Alexandra and any other students who are going through the SOAP?
So excited for these 12 fabulous G1s to join us at
@hcmcEM
in June! When I tell you we are over the moon to have you all join our team, it’s an understatement!! ❤️🫶🏻🎊😍

#MATCH2024
Don’t worry
#EMBound
students, if you don’t understand Preference Signaling or reading about it gives you anxiety,
@emresidents
has your back! Keep an eye out for more information and even an EMRA Hangouts this summer to give you all the info you need to best use your signals.
📣BREAKING NEWS!!📣
EM WILL be piloting Program/Preference Signaling thru the
@ERASinfo
Supp App in the 2022-23 residency application cycle!! We will NOT be participating in the 2 other components (past experiences & geographic preferences).

Hey

MS4s 👋,
@CORD_EM
released their updated SLOEs today! Let's go through each

because there are so many good boys (& girls) who are looking for a new family. ❤️🐶
@KK_medicine
Never PCR/Ag tested. Donated blood this summer & +Ab. Only symptoms = right after CORD (cough, runny nose, mild SOB). Didn’t qualify for testing at the time due to no fever. Fiancé gets tested daily (works for the NFL), he is up to ~100 tests.
#priorities
in the great USA. 🙃🙃🙃
@theangrypharm
I think it’s always better to assume the higher title! I’ve seen this happen with our APPs (patient refers to them as their doctor), and they just correct the patient and tell them they are the PA caring for them. I would much rather that than someone assume they aren’t.
When I tell you how loud I squealed with happiness in the ED yesterday when I saw our class of 2026 list. 😅🥰❤️
We are
#blessed
to have these awesome humans on our team at
@hcmcEM
! 🎉🍾🎊🥹

#spoiler
: I didn’t match at my

I got badass, fantastic, & well-rounded training with the best people 💯. In July, I’ll be APD/CD at
@hcmcEM
(my
#1
). It’s funny how it really does *all work out*. Cliché 😉, I know, but true!
And at the end of those 3 years, you wouldn’t have traded any of those you did match for the people above them on your list. Not one. Those people were like your family, you battled in the trenches with them, and you would never give that up in retrospect.
@emergcasey
This policy states: That ACEP support emergency medicine resident physicians’ right of first refusal over non- physicians, such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners, in performing ACGME-required procedures that are deemed medically necessary in emergency departments.
We {finally} did the damn thing! Thank you to our friends and family for coming to celebrate our love. 🥰 We had the best weekend, ever! 👰🏻♀️🤵🏼♂️🥂🍾🍕

Another pro-tip for
#EMbound
#MedStudentTwitter
: Do not apply for a rotation date you do not plan to accept if it is offered to you. We understand post-ERAS opening day rotations are not ideal, but do not select them as an option if you are not willing to accept them.
Look 👀 what just came in the mail - my copy of the

If men breastfed, we would have a suite with couches, TVs, a snack station, and a full kitchen. Instead, women have to use the dictation/locker room with no sink and put up a handwritten sign, so coworkers don’t accidentally walk in.

I’m not being patronizing. I am just letting you know it’s not for all procedures. Also, you don’t know me, nor my “attitude” towards PAs/NPs. At residency training programs, based on ACGME requirements, these procedures should go to the trainees, the EM residents.
Amazing!

That’s great that you can admit you made the mistake! My tweet was made to be educational that one should always check before assuming. A 13 second Google search would have prevented this, instead of assuming the female they are contacting to set up a rotation isn’t a physician.
#ACEP20

Same, congrats to those who matched, but my DMs are open for those who didn’t. ✉️
PS: If you didn’t match, you WILL get through this. We are here to help.
📣 EM-bound MS4’s: While med schools are predominantly responsible for getting students through the SOAP process, my DMs will be open if you need support - as no one on

#MatchDay2021
@emergcasey
@jfletchermd
If you read the policy, you would know this isn’t for ALL procedures in the ED, it states for ACGME-required procedures, which includes the following:
“In truth, no specialty in medicine is protected from disruptive change – especially when you’re looking at a 30+ year career. Do what you love and what you think you’re good at – and trust that if you do, you’ll be able to ride the waves even if the sea gets turbulent.”
@emergcasey
The policy states the EM-resident should have first right of refusal - if they feel they are prepared for graduation and feel they have competency in the procedure, they can absolutely decide to work with or defer to a PA/NP to perform the procedure. It should be their decision.
In today’s traveling saga that will make everyone but me anxious, I left my house 65 minutes before takeoff and arrived to the gate 5 min after boarding started. Perfectly timed. 🙌🏻
Walking out of my last trauma shift of the month and thus my last shift of PGY-1. Does this make me a PGY-2 now, or do I magically turn into a PGY-2 at midnight a la Cinderella style?
Only 7 of 57 programs accredited by the
@acgme
from 2018-2023 are HCA affiliated. While HCA-affiliated programs are growing at an alarming rate, 87.7% of EM programs started in the last 5 years *are not* HCA affiliated. See how that wouldn’t completely fix our program? 🧵
