Last night, my five-year old daughter met a transwoman. She quietly asked, "mamma, is this a man or a woman?" I encouraged her to ask the question to them.
Dear ladies and gentlemen, an authorised signatory, a CEO, and a person who writes emails with a tone of authority can be a woman. Stop presuming I am a 'man' just because I am authoritative, assertive and directing.
Yours truly (not Mr.) Ms. Bawa.
As parents celebrate 41 years of togetherness today, I am reminded that companionship and friendship are among the most valuable assets of life. A good marriage is essentially a good friendship. I am glad I am together with my best friend.

My mother
@NirjhariSinha
can kick your sorry ass every single day of your miserable life as a Modi troll. She doesn't need me or any guy to handle her Twitter account, or any aspect of her life. Asswipe misogynistic chowkidars like you will never get that.

We've moved - literally and metaphorically. The joys of well ventilated and well lit house + the perks of copying house hacks from

We moved home last month. Two years of pandemic WFH were soul crushing. The view from the window shrunk to a handheld six inches. We yearned for space and light in a nice neighbourhood. It took six months to find the place, and another three to move in.
Children hate managed childcare set-ups. Doctored environments rarely work for them. So, we let children play, and we really mean play.
This year, we have given a twist to childcare
@fifthel
Here's why and how! 1/4
Uncertain about asking, I asked them, "my daughter wants to know whether you are a man or a woman?" They replied, "I often say this to children who ask: I was a man, but I discovered it was so much fun to be a girl. So I became a girl."
It's today! 3

My 5-year old daughter decided to make me a "work hard" present -- a unicorn-butterfly-cat -- with
@jackerhack
. I adore this munchkin for doing what she does best - being herself!
Sexism updates for today:
1. I go to a meeting, make a presentation, while those attending the presentation are nodding at my male colleague who has accompanied me to the meeting.
Someone asks, what do you do
@hasgeek
? I say I am the CEO.
Said person is stunned.
That moment, when I sit back and watch the growth of a speaker from early days of
@fifthel
, and feel humble about the platform that
@hasgeek
has created.
So ideas like
#Aadhaar
and
#MOSIP
qualify as open source and given legitimacy by placing as talks in open source conferences? What more virtuosity do we want to attribute to toxic technology?
Thank you
@rachelnabors
for getting me to put this together. And to
@threepointone
for shepherding.
Fave quote: Knowledge is power; it creates, reinforces & displaces power, all at the same time. If power has to be decentralized in society, we need diverse creators of knowledge.
Meet Zainab Bawa, organizing the React community in India! In this interview, she talks about the challenges of organizing such a huge community and the power of open source to disrupt the status quo:
Took Amal to a business social this evening. She went up to waiters, amidst crowds, to ask for her favorite starters - all this independently. Proud to know that I am mom to a girl who knows what she wants, how to ask and get what she wants.

SOP insists on meet-up and hackathon venue hosts to stock up supplies for menstruation. Solve for vulnerabilities - make inclusion *actually* happen!
It was Day 2 at Obvious. And I got my period. I was relieved when I found that the bathrooms were stocked with menstrual supplies.
I didn’t have to go home, I didn’t have to awkwardly ask my (extremely) new colleagues if they had an extra sanitary napkin. Thank god for that.

And this is a good time to ask, are we going to contribute to building the technologies that will allow governments to dominate us? If you are one of the many communities of technologists, take a step back, introspect, raise your voice.

This morning I did what I think every
#woman
should do when faced with an intimidating situation. Threaten to report the person intimidating you, and then act on the threat you just issued.
We are at the protest against
#CAA
and
#NRC
at Town Hall in Bangalore. We got our 5-year old daughter to watch what is happening. It's a present she needs to know and understand for a future that fortunately/unfortunately awaits her.
I wonder if as a community organizer, is it ethical to call upon community members to raise awareness of what is happening with CAA and NRC? Raising awareness and registering protest against discrimination is the need of the hour.
Marinated chicken for biryani tomorrow, but

The current wave of saffronization has successfully constructed a singular, homogenous persona of "Muslim" that then is leveraged to fuel "Islamophobia". Whereas "Muslim" and "Hindu" identities were layered by regional and trading contexts up until 2001.
