Improving skills and building solid foundations is a topic that keeps coming up for discussions at meetups and conferences. My talk "The well-rounded engineer" was built around the same idea. Here's the slide deck:

2nd/3rd day on the job, a senior handed me a copy of Jeffrey Friedl's epic RegEx book and said, "Monday tak ye padh ke aaja" (by the time you are in office on Monday, you should have read this). The guy was a legend, so I took him seriously and read as much as I could. Since

Slightly off-topic, but if you pick the top 2 "classic" books in your choice of field and read them 2 times, or better work through them, you'll be ahead of 99% of folks. I guarantee it. (I saw a similar take on my timeline recently)

When you ignore the hustle and focus on skills, good things happen. This person: - Improved communication *and* tech skills - Ramped up their reading and writing - Got promoted to team lead; liking it - Salary increased 7x (remote being a factor here) All in < 2 years.

When I was early in my career, "casually writing a compiler over the weekend" was a thing. It signalled that you had the depth needed to excel. What's the modern equivalent for Gen Z? Please don't say job at a FAANG, that's a low bar.

A strong anti-pattern is when engineers claim, "I don't have enough work". What do you mean by not enough work? Improve the code, write more/better tests, re-check your types, write a compiler, advent of code, you get the point.
