It's so funny how Germans are trying to make antisemitism appear as though it were imported from the Arab and Muslim words, not just b/c of the Holocaust, but also b/c 80% of antisemitic incidents in Germany are from right wing thugs.

I believe that the symbol signifies the unity of the industrial working class and the peasantry. Also, would having an American flag in one's bio signify approbation of the Trail of Tears or dispossession of Native Americans?

I think that everyone who is voting for Biden should be willing to admit that Biden is unconditionally supporting a fascist regime. It is the very minimum of good faith.
@kenklippenstein
@ingeniero10101
Can't imagine Sanders ever doing that. "I’m not good at backslapping. I’m not good at pleasantries. If you have your birthday, I’m not going to call you up to congratulate you, so you’ll love me and you’ll write nice things about me."
@ArmandDoma
@shaun_vids

I am not saying that one ought not to vote for Biden. But Biden and his spokespersons have consistently ruled out conditioning military aid and calling for "red lines". One cannot ignore Biden's complicity in war crimes.

FIRE is great in its legal work, but much of its PR work is centrist/right-wing cultural warring/grievance-mongering. And there is a tension, if not an outright contradiction, between these two endeavors.

Also, “the sense that Starmer has a zero-tolerance approach.” Approach to what, exactly? Criticism of Israeli government policy?
@lionel_trolling
It's more personal for a lot of Americans (both for and against) than other conflicts and their atrocities, given that the U.S.'s overwhelming support for Israel is the decisive factor. I think it makes sense for an American to relate to it in the same way as Iraq War, say.
@lefttwick
This is literally Richard Hanania. His beat since October 7 has been, “Antisemitic conspiracy theories are mostly true, and that’s actually a good thing.”
@NourNaim88
I am an Albanian-American of Orthodox Christian background on both parents’ sides. This family looks as though it could be my own. We also dye eggs red and then “battle” each other by cracking the eggs against one another. Happy Easter in this awful time!
@lefttwick
Not really relevant, but can you please explain to me what makes the UAE uniquely evil in your opinion? B/c I thought all the Gulf states had a helot population of South Asians, not just UAE.

I've always found her goofiness very endearing, especially because it is so unexpected in such a successful (and attractive) person who commands authority.

It's funny that he then talks about his support for Warren, without acknowledging at all that Sanders had much greater support among working-class people and people without college degrees than Warren ever had.
@arash_tehran
@CoreyRobin
Not defeatist--just clear-eyed. There are very few Gideon Levys in Israel. And anyway, you always start negotiating with maximal demands. I certainly think every politician who supports settlements should be sanctioned--including the moderate Lapid.
@ArmandDoma
Biden is very hawkish on this. 90% of Palestinian fatalities have been noncombatants, and Biden has said there are no red lines. He also kept the embassy in Jerusalem and continued Trump's policy of recognizing sovereignty over Jerusalem, Golan Heights, and Abraham Accords.
In our focus group of Michigan voters, Thasin tells
@margbrennan
he "was a champion" for President Biden, but now feels Biden has "disowned" and "disenfranchised" Muslim Americans with his stance on Gaza.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think that the Houthis haven't just directly attacked any Egyptian bases near the Suez Canal?
@lefttwick
It’s also genuinely crazy how much people seem to believe that Israel is a bulwark against Islamist extremism in the West given that Israel did nothing to fight ISIL, unlike Iran and Muslim-majority client states of the USA!
@afalkhatib
Remember when you were advocating for airdrops of food that literally ended up killing several Palestinians in Gaza? At the same time, you were scolding others (including many food aid experts) who were telling you that airdrops were almost purely theatrical.
@lefttwick
I wonder how many Haaretz writers hate Levy. Surely a lower proportion than among the general Israeli population, but probably not an insignificant fraction.
@EmissaryOfNight
I think we’re also going to see a lot more general criticism of Israel, as we already have. The WCK strikes have created a “permission structure” to do so: e.g., Leon Panetta.
@ettingermentum
See also Matty's hectoring against staffers pressuring Biden for a ceasefire, despite the overwhelming popularity of a ceasefire among the Dem electorate. I think "popularism" just means popularity among the elite donor class.
@DavidAvromBell
The notion of purity is an interesting one: it is typically selectively invoked to impugn the red lines of one's political opponents, rather than one's own. Israel's conduct has been condemned not only by American leftists, but all the world's leading human rights organizations.

@AlecMacGillis
What about people who themselves lost or know someone who lost a spouse or parent? I don't think there are any easy answers. Science cannot give the answer here...
"Thousands upon thousands of children in the U.S. became orphans during the pandemic...Now I'm no psychiatrist but I'm pretty sure losing a parent has a bigger impact on your emotional & mental health than having to learn algebra via Zoom."
Watch my take:
@MazMHussain
It’s been very amusing seeing Israelis pretend that their country is a bulwark against Islamist extremism when it did nothing against ISIL, whereas Muslim countries, including Iran, did a lot.
@Sturgeons_Law
It is unfortunate that
@jonathanchait
does not specify whether he thinks that only violence against Israeli civilians is “horrific” or also against IDF personnel.
@phl43
For example, let's say a bunch of faculty decide to shun a faculty member whose opinion on a certain issue they dislike. This is illiberal, sure, but how do you work against this? You can't really force people to fraternize with a faculty member; that would be v. illiberal!
@phl43
I agree with you, but there's also like a Böckenforde Dictum-like problem, whereby this spirit of toleration cannot be enforced through liberal democratic means. This shows, I think, that "freedom of speech" is a notion containing latent contradictions that is thus ill-defined.
@GoldwagNathan
@ArmandDoma
If you read the follow-up posts, it's clear that he's criticizing the insanely rose-tinted views espoused by the NAFO "fellas": posting memes with "TACTICAL RETREAT = DONE" etc. instead of offering frank analysis.
@phl43
@ArthurSchopenh7
Well, you said they don't know anything about what they're protesting against. It's not necessary to have the knowledge of Finkelstein or Khalidi to have the knowledge that USG is enabling atrocities on a massive scale by Israel and that protests may cause a change of course.

Mr. Chait, would you also concede that criticism of "epistemic closure" and exhortations to independent thought might be more credible coming from persons who did not write an article such as this?

I have two teenage boys! Two bloomin' onions, a steak salad, lobster tails, a filet, a chicken sandwich and a sirloin + tip + tax = $125 on Doordash right now. It's crazy.

But I think
@CoreyRobin
's point is that there are, effectively speaking, no progressive forces whatsoever in Israeli society (under 2%).
Am inclined to agree about broad sanctions, but Israel is a democracy for Jews whereas the equivalent cannot be said for Iran and Russia.
@AbdelA1924
@qunfuz2
Do you think it could be effective to mention that the aspirations of Palestinian Christians are pretty much the same as those of Palestinian Muslims? And to mention past and present oppression of Palestinian Christians by Zionists and Israel?
@samhaselby
All these people have been so worried about ostensibly incipient Maoist struggle sessions and Stalinist kangaroo trials, but then they refused to apply any critical thought when it came time to oppose actual atrocities.
@sdbaral
@AlecMacGillis
I can imagine, for example, that a child who gave COVID to a parent who then died from it might grow up with strong feelings of guilt, in addition to the harm caused by losing a parent. Of course, lockdowns have also caused harm to children, I know. it's a tough call!
@ryangrim
I understand the point in your initial tweet, but nothing in Shapiro's history suggests that he has the *desire* for a more balanced relationship with Israel. If anything, then his history suggests desire for even more ardent support.
@AsadFromNYC
It’s so funny how Israel did basically nothing against ISIL, whereas Muslim client states of the USA and even Iran and their allied forces did way more.
