For the moment, we shouldn't assume that this ideology has conquered the GOP. Most Republican office-holders at this stage have not in fact condoned legislatures overturning their states' popular vote, or endorsed replacement theory, or expressed admiration for Viktor Orbán. /10

In 1793, French Revolutionaries turned Notre Dame into a "Temple of Reason." In 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of the French there. And in 1831, Victor Hugo published his great novel "Notre Dame de Paris," featuring the hunchback Quasimodo.

More than sixty years ago, Yuri Gagarin went into orbit around the earth, and Alan Shepard completed a suborbital flight reaching an altitude of over 100 nautical miles. The idea that this flight is any sort of landmark is actually pretty pathetic.

As far as I can see from the jobs wiki and h-net, there have been only 12 tenured or TT jobs advertised in History so far this year. More will certainly be advertised in the fall, but 12 at this point means that the total will still be catastrophically smaller than usual.

Putin is making it clear that the Ukraine crisis was not brought about by NATO's supposed encirclement of Russia. The original sin he wants to wipe out is the collapse of the Russian Empire--which included Finland and roughly half of present-day Poland.

5. But let's stipulate that the French Revolution had moments of exceptionally horrific violence, and that even if much of it was in response to violent attacks against the Revolution by its opponents, much of it cannot be explained so easily.

1. From a historical point of view, there is something fascinating, in a macabre way, about the TX governor lifting his state's mask mandate. There is at least an economic justification for opening businesses, but none whatsoever for not requiring masks.
