The US did not ratify the 1948 genocide convention until 1988. Reading through some of the debates on ratification, one notes that one reason many in the US didn't want to ratify the convention was a fear that Israel could be prosecuted for genocide.

@ezraklein @LiorSternfeld It's telling that @ezraklein leaves out all the instances where Jews are allowed a right of return: much of Europe from WWII; Spain and Portugal from the 15th century; and, of course, Israel's own law of return. Heart wrenching to see reports of Palestinian civilian casualties in another IDF strike on a school & shelter in Gaza. Even while Hamas cowardly hides behind schools, civilians must be protected. We continue to raise w/the Israeli Govt to do far more to prevent civilian deaths.

When working from the assumption in the 1950s that Mississippi must be a white state, it was "obvious" that Black people couldn't have voting rights.

This is really grotesque. This guy spent months saying these camps didn't exist, and now he's saying that while they exist, we shouldn't call them concentration camps & maybe Chinese Muslims deserve it.

The Grayzone's Aaron Maté says "I don't actually adopt the term concentration camps," and adds "this notion that it's committing genocide is hyperbolic. I think we have to be careful about our language."

Friedman is the purest embodiment of Upton Sinclair's quip that it is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it.

The last paragraph, I think, encapsulates pretty clearly Israel's authoritarianism. It begins with Palestinians (today in the West Bank and Gaza; yesterday Palestinian citizens under military rule) and finishes with Israeli Jews as well.

Ok, so it seems the Israelis, by having tanks and artillery in the Philadelphi corridor, which is part of the larger Zone D, are in breach of the Camp David Accords. But the larger breach is the 2005 Philadelphi Corridor Agreement.

Former Harvard president thinks an academic center specializing in the study of the Middle East ought not invite one of the most prominent historians of Palestine, Rashid Khalidi, but should invite a racist columnist with no expertise, Brett Stephens, because he's pro-Israel.

My confidence in Harvard leadership’s ability and will to confront anti-semitism and the demonization of Israel continues to decline. Unfortunately, it is becoming ever clearer why Harvard ranks first on anti- semitism, even as it ranks last on upholding free speech. Confronting

Solid advice. We should settle for a realistic 48-hour partial ceasefire so that no more than 500 polio vaccines can be administered to a list of children amputees vetted by Israel before they continue the genocide. That's just smart politics!

The Uncommitted pro-Palestinian movement has a strategic choice to make right now: It can make its voice heard inside the Democratic camp, get some limited yet reasonable (within political reality) concessions -- and then commit to work hard to defeat the far-right Republicans

I see. Violence against Israelis is done by Palestinians and specific organizations. But violence against Palestinians, orders of magnitude greater mind you, is some amorphous force of nature with no author.

Here you see that ontologically, Israelis are permanent victims and Palestinians perpetrators, never mind that the number of children killed by Israelis is over ten times the number of all people killed on October 7.

The recognition of civilian victims in Gaza without a discussion of the terrorist massacre of Hamas on 7 October 2023 and the victims of the war on the Israeli side was biased and I would like to apologize sincerely for the impression that victims and perpetrators are inversed.

So there's been some controversy about the Lebanese consul in New York. If you go to the consul's website, you can see a statement complaining about protests and angry emails and demands to resign, which seems to have begun since last week's explosion:
