A lot of people seem to miss that my original claim is not prescriptive, but diagnostic. Also sure if Bernie loses, he'll endorse/campaign for Biden as he did Clinton, because he's a mensch; many of us will hold our noses/vote D like we always do; but times they are a changing.

Gina Haspel now runs the CIA after running torture under Bush. This thread is not only poor on historical facts but simply evades the crimes of the last 20 years.

The failures of the university Presidents are just the old failures of boardroom liberalism, which always tried to put a virtuous face on raw imperial power. Caught between an accelerationist right and morally uncompromising students with little to lose, they’re lost, bewildered.

Kennedy asks about Omarova’s membership in a Soviet youth group. “Everybody in that country was a member of the Komsomol... it was a part of normal progress in school.” “Have you resigned?” “You grow out of it with age.” “Did you send them a letter, though, resigning?”

Among my more pessimistic conclusions of the past years is that we no longer have access to a remotely convincing theory of change. All we have is attrition and salvage, reaction and normalization, opportunism and moral witness, against larger forces moving us on the board.

TODAY: A 63 y/o Black man will be caged the rest of his life for stealing hedge clippers. The Louisiana Supreme Court upheld the sentence. The lone dissent was Chief Justice Bernette Johnson. The only female & Black person on court. The rest are white men.

The smart money center-right has always had a clear strategy: feed the far right to discipline the soft center against any leftward temptation. Occasionally, they will call-out right-wing excesses, pretending to be honest brokers, but they will always return to this rule.

One of the biggest mistakes I see on here is people who think cancellation has a specific political valence. We just live in a culture and economy in which the threshold of disposability is exceedingly low.

The war on terror is evolving. The MS-13 scare is like the Bush Administration's weapons of mass destruction scare; family separation is of a piece with previous torture and detention scandals. It is not sudden norm erosion, but a long, coercive mutation of domestic governance.

Zionists live in an upside down world. “Blood and soil nationalism” for me but not for thee. Your violent rhetoric of protest/resistance: a death cult, my murderous military defense of colonialism and apartheid: just good liberal values. But I think they will have to reevaluate.

I don't see how you separate being on the left from a scrupulous commitment to universalism. Such a commitment need not be univocal, unlearning, inattentive to difference, or "unilaterally declared" (as Fanon put it). But I often feel old and out of touch for holding this view.

For most of America’s history, when our companies did better, our workers did better – and America built a thriving middle class. The Accountable Capitalism Act will help realign our skewed market incentives so companies & workers can once again do well together.

The irony of the forthcoming Barrett confirmation as her short acceptance speech indicated is that it will be all about identity theatrics which will stymie or force serious errors of many Democrats, when this is the type of substantive issue that should be explored.

In a recent dissent, Amy Coney Barrett wrote that the right to vote and serve on juries belonged "only to virtuous citizens." Her opinion also suggests that all civic rights are subject to virtue-based exceptions.

A year since this started. I'm fine, lucky to have a job, close to those I love, all of them healthy so far. It's a challenge to see our neighborhood visibly deteriorate, but it could be far worse. But as far as mood goes, I feel brittle, near cracking, a shell of my former self.

Official response to 9/11 was to recast the US as a blood and soil "homeland" surrounded by racial + religious enemies and to launch an adventurist war built on propaganda, lies, kidnapping, torture. Obama-style politics hoped to soothe the genie back into the bottle and failed.

What if massive multi-racial protests show anti-blackness isn't a monolithic force structuring modern social life; instead revealing common recognition of how a long history of racist human sacrifice built a malevolent state-economy that coerces and imperils the great majority.
