Cincinnati Politics. Pragmatic Progressive. YIMBY. Urbanist. Housing is good, actually. Twitter is not real life, so don’t try to make real life Twitter.
Guys, if you want Biden to drop out because you think the vibes are off, fine.
But this guy getting extremely deep in the weeds on obscure industrial policy and hard foreign policy questions off the cuff is not senile.
He’s simply not.
So much of the dirtbag left has clinical depression and is trying to back into a political point of view that makes that cool instead of getting therapy
Have said this before, but Democrats are vulnerable on housing. Reasonable Republicans like Bergum have a real opportunity to make abundant housing a key policy plank.
Dems too attached to coastal NIMBYs and silly vacancy truthers/ public housing only types
“We built cities all over America that are designed for automobiles and not designed for people... Our housing costs are high, in part because of the way that we've designed our cities."

Late stage capitalism is when you do insanely impressive feats of engineering primarily in service of middle class passengers being able to have a leisurely vacation and see the world
A Medieval peasant would fall on his knees and worship this if he saw it
Late stage capitalism is so absurdly comical at times.

After 1 hour of public comment, 5 people are in support of Connected Communities and 11 are against it. And there's a big difference between these two camps: the former consists of CDCs, development lawyers, and realtors. The latter have been residents and a homeless advocate.
There are 3 archetypal cities in the US
1. NYC is the cosmopolitan pre street grid dense European city
2. Chicago is the pre-war working class immigrant railroad town - the most American city
3. LA is the post-automobile, post war, car centric sprawl West Coast city
@opinonhaver
10 years ago in Kentucky a moderate with political bonafides & strong family roots in KY politics got blown out by Mitch McConnell
I am from KY, Clooney would be successfully painted as a carpetbagger and lose badly
It is trivially easy to not get traffic tickets. I have never gotten one.
Routinely getting tickets is like the “return the shopping cart” litmus test. If you get them frequently, you have proven the social compact is meaningless in your eyes
People with a predisposition to mental illness and neurosis are subjecting themselves to a 24/7 drip of graphic war footage
This is not healthy
You can oppose the war without watching kids die every day. Doing so does not make you more empathetic. You do not need to do this
The urbanist movement has basically nothing to do with most of the causes discussed below and to the extent it does (climate change) building dense housing will still accomplish it
Trying to to turn urbanism into another facet of the omnicause is something I totally reject
There's absolutely no room in the urbanist movement for conservatives.
The fight for equitable, climate conscious cities, worker's rights, reproductive rights, racial justice, wealth equality, and LGBTQ rights are all the same fight.
It's the fight for our future.
@brianschatz
Why does civility only have to go in one direction? Why does no one bat an eye when Republicans call Democrats groomers and pedophiles but god forbid there’s a snarky tweet about some also-ran Republican.
@eomrules
Going 5 miles over the speed limit is bad and speed limits are not arbitrary. Faster speeds are directly correlated with greater likelihood of pedestrian death
The speed limit is not a suggestion
I genuinely believe building housing should be non-partisan, but I genuinely hope this is a wake up call for “progressives” who have the same view on this issue as Donald John Trump
Donald Trump has gone full NIMBY.
It should be absolutely unacceptable for ANY local democrats to side with Trump over Biden’s pro-housing agenda. Every NIMBY Democrat should be primaried.
Really can’t be understated how transformative this would be for the whole city, but especially Downtown.
Imagine living in a much denser Downtown with expanded streetcar, BRT coming online, a connected bike lane network. Strong argument for best midsize city downtown in America

It’s been stunning watching leftists go from

To

It’s best to understand all of this as a LARP. Edgy suburban kids in Ohio get rewarded with likes & retweets from their bubble for being maximally offensive, cruel, and contrarian
I am an urbanist and vocal critic of the people who are terrified of cities but showing the nicest part of the city and saying “See? It’s fine!” is probably the least effective way to make the argument that a city is safe
No, Biden could not, in fact, dictate policy to a sovereign nation with a half trillion dollar economy, competent military, and political considerations of their own especially given the fact that they know support of Israel is broadly popular
unable? biden could stop the bombs with a phone call in the next 5 minutes if that's what he wanted. 'unwilling' is the word you want, the washington post

Am I wrong for thinking land acknowledgments (implying indigenous peoples sprung up from the land and had no border changes, societal change, or conflict) are passively playing into the noble savage myth

They crossed double yellow line to pass you fucking dolt. It would be illegal and dangerous whether it was a car, motorcycle, or bike in the lane. You need help.
Imagine being a dues paying DSA member and watching them basically completely give up on holding power because of purity test bullshit after they took control of state party (which was actually kind of impressive?)
This is our lesson, and we hope socialists everywhere will pay close attention: the Democratic Party is a dead end. It is a “party” in name only; truly, it is simply a tangled web of dark money and mega-donors, cynical consultants, and lapdog politicians.

Can we all take a moment and think about what Matt Christman would be tweeting if, say, one of the hosts on Pod Save America was in the same situation he was in right now
I feel like these are equal comparisons. What would the guy who made fun of Syrian refugees say about that
@KareemRifai
This is really showcasing the key difference between liberals and leftists
Liberals think hate & bigotry is bad regardless of justification
Leftists think it’s fine to have a little racism as long as you check the right boxes in the purity test
There’s a weird “bus vs streetcar” backlash/undercurrent I’m noticing On Here
These two transit systems are not opposed, they compliment each other. There is huge overlap in supporters!
It’s not a zero sum game, we don’t need to manufacture a rivalry between transit nerds lol
Streetcar gets a bad rap for only catering to tourists and bar hoppers but on a snowy Saturday morning and early afternoon the streetcar is full; except now it’s people running errands, going to Findlay Market or Kroger, getting coffee, going to work.
Truly useful transit.

Powerful op-ed from
@Muhammad_Speaks
calling out the pro-housing and YIMBY movement's stark silence on domicide and mass displacement in Gaza.
I don’t know how much more clear it can be that “Biden can end this with a phone call” was total bullshit
Turns out international diplomacy is pretty tough and people outside of the US government actually have agency!
BREAKING: Ultranationalist ministers Ben Gvir and Smotrich tell Netanyahu they will leave the coalition and topple the government if the Israeli proposal for the hostage deal presented by President Biden goes through
We could be a dense, pedestrian friendly, transit connected city as far north as Clifton, as far south as the Banks, as far west as the West End, as far east as the East End in a generation or less if we put our minds to it.
@NimbyPatrol
Density should be the
#1
priority for every urbanist. We need to do all of the above, but bike lanes and pedestrian plazas in a dead, empty city is not a win
If City Council doesn’t scale back Connected Communities in the face of opposition from a vocal minority of NIMBYs who demand a hecklers veto, it will be one of the most courageous things they’ve ever done.
We should center the needs of the people who want to use public transit to get from point A to point B safely, quickly, and comfortably rather than the people who want to use public transit as a place to smoke meth
“how dare you suggest I centre the struggles of people with substance use disorder when talking about their presence on public transit, it is my god given right to talk about them as human garbage”
Last night in New York pro-Pals harassed attendees to a Biden fundraiser. One man stalked a young woman screaming:
“F*cking murderous k*ke.”
“F*cking die.”
“Keep it moving b*tch.”
These are antisemitic, misogynist thugs and they’ve had free rein for too long.

sorry, you’re pretending that you would be ok with you and your love ones being murdered to get internet points within your terminally online echo chamber, you don’t get to call anyone a “dweeb”
The lesson from CHAZ is that a community without police will immediately reproduce police, except shittier
It took them all of .001 seconds before the self appointed police killed a kid lmao
Nobody disagrees CHAZ was a mess, but the idea of people barring cops from any part of a city would have been laughable only a month before. It was a step forward in radical potential and rather than seek to push that further you elect to ridicule it like a generic conservative.
Repost from
@MotenSpeaks
discussing the detrimental effects bike lanes are having on culture and business in some parts of the city. I agree 100% with his commentary.
#dontmutedc
After 2016 a lot of well meaning libs made people like Briahna feel like they held some sort of sway over the Democratic Party when in reality they don’t matter at all. They’re not important. Suburban women, independents, etc matter infinitely more than terminally online leftists
Thanks for amplifying my message. I hope more and more people realize that lowering the bar for Biden hurts millions upon millions of poor and working class Americans who are told every year to maintain an unbearable status quo so liberals don’t have to endure an uncomfortable
There are not 24 hour coffee shops and book stores (with cats) in every town because the vast majority of towns in America could not support such an enterprise. It would be empty most of the time
You will not be issued a blank check to pursue unproductive hobbies under socialism
Like, the world would undeniably be a happier place if every town had at least one 24 hour coffeeshop and bookstore (with a cat). People would go there all the time. But maybe not enough to make a constantly increasing profit. Maybe not even enough to pay extortionate rent.
@admcrlsn
Hey voters in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania! I have great news! Remember that primary yall voted in, well forget about all that! Taylor Swift and Oprah got to decide who the nominee is going to be 😊
@SwannMarcus89
I’m not a suburb hater (I’m a city lover - important distinction) but I think the worst thing about this picture is lack of amenities in walking or easy public transit distance. Even in a mid tier city’s Downtown you can walk to dozens of food/entertainment/culture options
Really do not like this move. I’m not anti arena per se but denying housing that could be built now in favor of maybe possibly putting an arena there - when we already have an existing arena that could be renovated or rebuilt on the same site - seems bad on its face
@JohnJBlatchford
It’s getting replaced with dense (300+) units of mixed rate housing. The building is full of asbestos and an expert said the design wasn’t conducive to development, could only yield ~20 units. This is a good thing
Notice that no reasonable observers are decrying the killing of IDF soldiers and other valid military targets. There is gruesome footage, including of dead female IDF. But that is war. Kidnapping kids, parading corpses, gunning down elderly people at a bus stop is not war
@merovingians
Which is interesting because while the game is obviously sympathetic to socialism it handles it with a lot more nuance than the Chapo bros ever could; maybe because they actually live in formerly communist countries instead of Brooklyn or whatever

That did not happen with Gameboys. If you even dared take a portable gaming device out in school it was getting confiscated immediately. You did not have a bunch of helicopter parent Karens demanding their child have access to Gameboys at all times. These are not remotely similar
