I worked on the wtc retail masterplan which relocated Westfield mall from under the destroyed twin towers to the new oculus structure. Only the memorial museum/waterfall monument & PATH station are on the original WTC block
Can someone tell me why they built a mall on ground zero at the 9/11 memorial?? like am I being an asshole and is there some sort of deep context or is this just so pointedly American it’s ridiculous

FYI: NYPD official Rebecca Weiner, who cited “outside agitators” as a reason for NYPD raids but offered no transparency is a Columbia adjunct. The unit she leads came under fire in the early 2010s for spying on Muslim New Yorkers. I know because I sued that unit for spying on me.

9/11 was devastating for me. working on a small part of the reconstruction felt like real civic engagement, being a true citizen of new york. I relished the opportunity. I got pain twangs even reflecting on this. it was so long ago.
