As a candidate in the GM Mayoral election, I've been asked to 'clarify my stance' on gender.
I thought my stance on this was obvious, but just to be 100% clear:
Trans women are women. Trans-men are men. Non-binary identities are valid.
The rights of women and the rights of trans people are NOT mutually exclusive.
Any attempt to make the existence of trans-people seem like a threat to other women is a cynical attempt to de-legitimise a community that is asking for only one thing: the right to exist in safety.
I am many things - a proud feminist, a politician, a husband.
Above all, I am a queer man with a chosen family of queer communities - including trans & non-binary friends. I refuse to stand idly by while the people I care about are systematically harassed for being themselves.
We've just gained our first Liberal Democrat councillor in 11 years for the City of Salford! So proud of our Kersal candidate, Avrohom Walter, for bringing the Liberal Democrats back into Salford!
#LE2021
If I am elected Mayor of Greater Manchester, I will gladly dance alongside any police officer fierce enough to display their colours at Pride. 🏳️🌈
This vile targeting of LGBT people and our culture in politics can get in the freakin’ bin.
This stops day one if I am elected Mayor of Greater Manchester. If it doesn’t, the Chief Constable will be sacked and a replacement found. Without a professional police force a modern society cannot exist.
Took a break from Twitter/politics to go and get married!

Back with a new surname, but the same ol' liberal heart. I just also share that with someone else now. 🥰
Incredibly excited to have been chosen to represent Liberal Democrats across Greater Manchester in this year’s GM Mayoral elections!
The Lib Dem’s are full of amazing people working for their communities across GM, and I’m humbled to represent them.
A big thank you to the 28000 people from across Greater Manchester who voted for me and the Lib Dems in the mayoral election!
It has been a privilege to fly the liberal flag for all my brilliant colleagues across the region. I’m so proud to be part of such a fantastic team. 🧡
Big up to the gender crits for spreading my message✌️
Special mention to all the personal insults from anonymous accounts 💕
No Twitter comment will change the fact that trans women are women, or that our laws do not base gender solely on a persons chromosomes/biology/sex 🥰

It’s official - our nominations have been confirmed and I’m your Lib Dem GM Mayoral candidate!🏃
A big thanks to all the fellow Lib Dems, volunteers and supporters who have helped us on the campaign so far.
Bring on the election!
Really great to be at the
@MCRLibDems
campaign launch tonight, chatting with the team who are fighting for residents in areas Labour have been taking for granted for years.
@AlanGoodLD
@LukeAllanLD
and the rest of the team are incredible local candidates at this May’s locals!
The sheer irony of watching Tory MPs (inc strong brexit-eers) scramble to change the rules of the ‘22 committee so that they can hold a second vote, after not liking the outcome following the first vote… 👀
Out in Hazel Grove today, speaking to residents and picking up casework with the always-wonderful
@Lisa_Smart
,
@BCrombieFisher
& co! (featuring our special fluffy guest)
No amount of rain or wind will stop us knocking on those doors!
Fantastic result - what a way to finish the

Well done to the Salford team and
@JMooreSalford
for a brilliant win. Even in Labour’s heartlands we are making gains. 💪
I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve received HUNDREDS of postcards through my letterbox from
@MumsForLungs
since announcing my run for GM Mayor.
Well done to their team on an incredible campaign, which has informed us all, and has made EVERY candidate commit to action.
Less than ten years ago AJ Bell stadium opened as a new home for Salford RL.
For the council to consider selling it on so quickly shows a remarkable lack of vision. We need to do everything possible to safeguard the stadium for Salford teams.
Absolutely delighted to have been elected as a Cllr in Hazel Grove! 🔶
Thank you to everybody who came out to vote yesterday. I will do everything I can to represent our community in the best way possible!
#LocalElection2023
#StockportElection
An excellent MEN article on the work we've been doing over the years to bring local, liberal representation back into Salford.
Optimism is high. Canvassing is strong. We're getting our message out there and we're ready to make gains!
It was wonderful to have a (brief) break from campaigning yesterday to attend the fantastic
@StockportPride
festival and wave the Liberal flag. Seeing so many people out in support was heart-warming.
Lib Dems will always be on the side of pride, equality and inclusivity for all.
The weather held out for our canvassing session this afternoon! ☀️
Great to be out on the doors talking to our residents. So many people switching to back
@Lisa_Smart
because they know she can bring the change we need to Hazel Grove.
#GeneralElectionN0W
What a fantastic hustings this afternoon with
#MyVoteMyVoice
- I really enjoyed tackling questions that often go ignored in politics.
A huge thank you to the organisers for putting it together and giving us the chance to answer questions from a really engaging audience!
With all our nominations in, I'm delighted to officially be on the ballot paper alongside the incredible
@SalfordLibDems
candidates running across our great city this year.
We're running more candidates then we've run since 2004 - and I'm so proud of the work our team has done.
Out with the Quays team to get out the vote for today’s elections! So great to see so much support for
@SalfordLibDems
and our really fantastic candidates.
Make sure to go and vote before polls close at 10pm!
What a week!
🎤 Many fantastic debates with lively discussion and great questions

Happy Polling Day Eve, everyone! 🎵
Big thanks to the MVP of this campaign... my big yellow raincoat.
Been through it all with me, and has me known as “that guy in yellow constantly knocking and stuffing stuff in our letterboxes”.
BREAKING: Liberal Democrats hold the seat in Quays ward.
Full result:
Paul Heilbron (Lib Dem) - 540
Elizabeth McCoy (Labour) - 321
Andrea Josephine Romero O'Brien (Green) - 124
985 total votes. 12.3% turnout.
Nobody joins the Lib Dems with the expectation that they'll fall into a council seat. Every one of our candidates has to work tirelessly for every single vote.
Voting for a Lib Dem candidate means voting for someone who is willing to fight for their community.
Here's the thing: Liberal Democrats don’t do safe seats. We work all year round and fight for every single vote, so you know you’re getting a fighter when you elect a Lib Dem.
Delighted to be officially selected by my local party
@SalfordLibDem
to run as their Mayoral candidate for Salford in
#Locals2021
. Looking forward to taking the fight to Labour and working alongside our incredible local candidates across the city. 🙌
@PushTheSutton
We’re all going to go through the aye lobby painted up like the blue man group , apart from Ed who is going to dress up as a big orange bowling ball and skittle us all down. The journalists will love it.
Preventing parliament from doing its job through
#Prorogation
goes beyond Brexit - it's a direct attack on our Parliamentary democracy by an unelected PM.
All those pretending this is business as usual are well aware of the fact that this 5 week prorogation is beyond normal.

On a personal note, I'm so happy and proud to be representing

If you told me a year ago I would be running as a LibDem candidate in a general election, I'd have called you bonkers...
Absolutely delighted to be represnting our Lib Dem plan for the future in Salford.

Big thanks to
@SalfordNow
for chatting with me about the incredible work all of our candidates have been doing in the lead up to tomorrow's elections. 💪
So proud to work alongside a fantastic team of dedicated and passionate Lib Dems.
Just like to take this moment to say a huge thank you to
@AndyBob1308
for all the support and stress management he's given to me over the campaign!
Can't wait to marry him in four weeks time. 🥰
So proud to have just voted for
@jakelibdem
for Salford Mayor and although that's a long shot, keeping everything crossed for the council elections in which it's all to play for! Good luck to everyone fighting for change in Salford - you can do it!
They're handed the opportunity to protect residents against the soaring costs of cladding removal... and the Tories vote against it.
How out of touch with people do you have to be to do that?
#EndOurCladdingScandal
On May 6th we have a real chance of changing Salford Council for the better, and we're ready to make a difference.
We're running brilliant Lib Dem candidates across the city. Elect us, and this is what you'll get. 👇

Spent the morning crafting up some homes for our birds and bats over in Torkington Park with the Friends of team and some budding volunteers.
Looking forward to getting them up! 🦇
Another reason we need
#ProportionalRepresentation

Ironically, PR in this election would've been a boon for Corbyn and his policies.
As our (former) leader Jo pointed out, Labour and the Tories would be split into different parties if not for the two party system... (1/3)
A big thank you to the 3099 people who voted for me in

A lovely evening to be out on the doorstep!
So great to see so many people have already cast their postal votes for our

candidates.
Feeling good about

Getting a little too used to these Christmas-time deliveries...
Side-note: are you even a Lib Dem campaigner I'd you don't have a bright yellow coat to do your literature rounds in?
What a day! Thanks to all the voters, campaigners, and fellow Libdems-in-arms.
Looking forward to the results, but whatever happens we should all be immensely proud. 👊🔶

A really informative meeting with some fantastic discussion. Looking forward to helping Andy campaign in the run up to the 2021 election!
NEW: The Conservative candidate in the Greater Manchester Mayoral election has defected to Reform UK. Dan Barker says it’s due to the national party failing to support him. He claims they’ve “given up on Greater Manchester”. More on

Millions of people will be affected if the self-employed scheme isn't extended in line with furlough.
The government only provided support to the self-employed after intense pressure - we've got to keep putting the pressure on to protect the livelihoods of self-employed people.
Just asked PM if he would extend help to self-employed people, like the extension of furlough
Millions of cleaners, childminders, taxi drivers & hairdressers will not get any support after May
Disappointed he failed to answer & just joked

One of my favourite things about today: seeing so many Lib Dems who I’ve followed eagerly for years finally pick up their well-earned seats.
The hard work really can pay off! 💪
A big thank you to all of my friends and family for putting up with my constant election-ing and complete lack of presence the last five weeks.

Disappointing to see our MP sharing antisemitic views. As someone who fought against her in the GE, I thought she was a respectable person - even if I didn't agree with her politics.
Salford deserves better than this.
This was a really fantastic hustings to be a part of. It was great to speak about a subject I’m so passionate about and engage with some great people across the Uk Tech sector. Thanks for having me! 💅
We rely on our NHS for so much. Seeing it systematically dismantled by a Tory government who have consistently underfunded our public services for so long is devastating.
Just cast my first vote as a resident of Stockport for the
@HGWardLibDems
and our incredible councillor Paul Ankers!
Best of luck to all my LD friends who are standing in today's local elections across the country - especially in my old city of Salford. 🗳️
Alex has been an absolutely incredible candidate. To take us from nothing to within 103 votes of winning another Salford seat is absolutely brilliant. 🙌
So proud to have helped him along the way. Well done
@awliberal
and the
@SalfordLibDems
Quays team in a fantastic result!
There is a reason our party consistently has it's economic pledges independently verified.
Unlike the Tory and Labour pledges, we build an economic future on evidence and sound planning - rather than pie-in-the-sky thinking and cynical electioneering.
#UniteToRemain
As if the countless reasons not to vote Tory in
#GE2019
weren't already enough, Tommy Robinson has now endorsed Boris.
That's what the Conservatives have become.
Continually frustrated by the government attempting to pull the wool over our eyes by referring to an "Australian Style deal."
Australia doesn't have a deal with the EU beyond WTO terms. An Australian deal is
#NoDeal
. Their attempt to control the narrative is deeply cynical.
Nobody should be surprised by this.
"Get Brexit Done" is a ridiculous slogan that tried to dupe the public into thinking this will all be over come January 31st. It won't be.
Tomorrow, we need to deny the Tories a majority to stop this mess.
Well done to all candidates standing down at this election to achieve something more important than any political party.
#UniteToRemain
When politicians work together towards a common goals, we can achieve more.

The easiest and fastest way to stop this whole Brexit debacle is to vote LibDem so we can get a majority.

Completely agree! We need a strategy for consistent, safe cycling across the whole region. We can’t expect people to travel by bike without investing in the infrastructure that lets them do so safely.
Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress. The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.
I joined the Lib Dems because their work in coalition government means I'm able to get married this year.
Seeing the Labour leader support a church that wants to see that banned is so disappointing.
...and the tweet is still up one day later. 🤷
Signed, and happy to do so. Happy to work with

We both decided to change to a brand new surname neither of us previously had. It's nice to feel like we're starting our own little family in that respect! Too each their own, though. 😊
