By tying healthcare to employment, the corporate lobby has us stuck in jobs we have "for the insurance". By disconnecting this, people can change jobs w/o risking health coverage. That's "bad for business". Add for profit helathcare and health insurers, and you have the "why".

A lot of these employers still think $12-$14/hr is going to give them workers who care about the outcome. There's a tipping point at $18-$20/hr in my area. If you offer that, you'll have more applicants than you can handle.

Taxes pay a small fraction of the USG, but they will have us believe it's not so. Most is paid for by selling Treasury bonds to, among others, foreign governments like China, who is the single largest buyer of US T bonds. So yes, income tax is 100% about control.
