Formal Announcement of the Dismissal of Mr Martyn Pitman - Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist: Royal Hampshire County Hospital / Hampshire Hospitals NHS Trust
@HHFTnhs
As one traverses one's course through life's challenges, one occasionally comes into contact with individuals who have such a profound effect on you, as to achieve almost 'hero status.' Today, for me, Mr Alan Bates, at the PO Inquiry, crossed this very high line. I salute him.
Believe me the atmosphere certainly won't be 'calm' when there are Maternity emergencies, when the only ability to seek Obstetric, Anaesthetic and Neonatal input is to call a blue-light ambulance and to endure a perilous 13 mile trip to the Winchester Maternity Unit 🚑 🏥
Discover the calm atmosphere of our newly opened Birth Centre at Andover War Memorial Hospital, featuring a birthing pool with soft lighting.
Meet Harriet, our Community Midwifery Matron, who introduces you to the various birthday aids available to support your journey.
Fascinating statement from
@nickwallis
author of 'The Great Post Office Scandal' and 'Mr Bates v the Post Office' on ITV tonight at 2100hrs. This will ring so depressingly true with those who have fallen foul of persecution and victimisation as NHS (and other) whistle-blowers.
I found this a really, really tough watch last night, having recently experienced, first-hand, as a 20-year experienced Obs & Gynae Consultant, the devastating and career-destroying consequences of whistleblowing maternity service safety concerns 😟

The CEO of CofC, who presided over the Lucy Letby travesty, proceeding to persecute and victimise the brave Consultants who whistleblew concerns, recorded and posted this video 9 YEARS AGO! 9 years ago. 'A game changer!!!' 🤔😳
The very worst, life-changing injuries, across my 30-year Obstetric career, were sustained following deliberately -planned and executed hands-off deliveries durjng water-births, following prolonged periods of maternal immersion.
Prog rock masterclass by the legendary
@HackettOfficial
and his incredible, note perfect band last night at the Brighton Dome. Beautiful lighting
@CurranLighting
. Great new material and truly memorable performance of Genesis: Seconds Out. What a night! What a band!😃
So what actions will now be taken against the Trust CEO and Medical Director? Hats off to the heroic Dr Jayaram and his Neonatal Consultant colleagues who will add to the growing number of inappropriately, brutally victimised NHS whistleblowers.
EXCLUSIVE: The doctor who helped catch Britain’s worst baby killer.
Dr Ravi Jayaram spent two years pleading with hospital managers to investigate Lucy Letby.
Instead, they made him apologise and attend mediation with her.
Incredibly gratifying when a new and much needed NICE Guideline update contains just about every issue and controversy that you have spoken up about for 2 decades, sometimes against harsh resistance. Here's hoping it makes a positive difference.👏👏👏
A statement from
@wesstreeting
that will strike fear into the hearts of many an NHS CEO, Chair and complicit senior manager. You can run. But you can't hide, for very much longer......
Yet again a whistleblower makes the difference. The Lucy Letby exposé, the PO scandal, every UK Maternity scandal, now this. Really makes one wonder where the UK would actually be without whistleblowers? Despite that they face persecution, victimisation and career destruction
Once again, this is a huge tribute to Shirley, our whistleblower who began the whole chain of events. Amazing to think that “just the cleaner” (as she calls herself) has affected huge change. Thank you to all the other women and men who’ve trusted us along the way.
I can assure you that it will be far far bigger that the Post Office scandal, with way more careers and lives damaged and destroyed. But will the Public Inquiry, that this scandal so desperately needs, ever be supported? If it is, the disturbing truth will eventually get out.
Some achievement for a band to play an album live that actually trumps the original studio version.
@HackettOfficial
and his stellar band achieved that last night, with bells ( and cymbals) on. Breathing vibrant new life into the Genesis classic 'Foxtrot.' Oh wow!!!👏👏👏
I really am going to lose the plot if I hear, one more time, that this morning's damning CQC Maternity Report can be addressed by simply throwing more money at Maternity Units. Even within the last week Lord Darzi's report concluded that was not the answer.
This made me chuckle! Throughout my period of tenure as an O&G Consultant at RHCH Winchester
@HHFTnhs
I was unfairly and inappropriately blamed for the unit having a 'higher than average caesarean section rate.' I never believed that the CS was an important outcome variable
What an epic show tonight by the legendary
@HackettOfficial
and his truly brilliant band. Great mix of new and (very) old tracks, including stunning Lamb Lies Down on Broadway highlights. Exemplary musicianship. If you get a chance, catch this tour!
Sincere thanks to File on 4, Michael Buchanan and Katie Langton for their sensitive and compassionate coverage of my case. After all we have been through, it was a tough and triggering listen. I hope that it will make a difference.
If only more MPs were like the principled and determined Lord Arbuthnot. He chose to genuinely represent his beleaguered and persecuted constituents, rather than taking the easier option of turning a blind eye and looking the other way. A man of integrity. A true hero

@wesstreeting
also lifts the lid on the heinous manner in which senior NHS Management have and continue to treat whistleblowers. This certainly isn't solely restricted to their treatment of patients.
She 'SHOULD' have been saved. Not 'could.' But not 'by the hospital.' By the healthcare 'professionals' who neglected her and permitted her to die through omission of the most basic of clinical tasks. Unforgivable.
Leading Integrity
You couldn't make this up:
"Post Office chief Vennells complained that GC put professional integrity ‘above the business’"
Can you imagine, a CEO complaining about staff integrity?
Surely (irony alert) such staff were disciplined?
An appropriate time to reflect and cherish the views and opinions of the ignored thousands, who value and appreciate what I did, forcing me from my entrenched, recent focus on the vocal, threatened minority, who have succeeded in ending my career. Thank you all so very much. 🥺💔
@lucyjones
Have you ever fallen asleep in the bath? If so, you will know how your skin becomes. Multiply that x5 and then rip your skin and the muscles below (this equates to your perineum) Then imagine surgically repairing that; it is like stitching a sodden, actively bleeding bath sponge.
@ShaunLintern
Yet again it takes a brave NHS whistleblower to lift the lid on another horrific apparent cover-up by Senior Managers. The same old story of placing organisational reputational damage limitation well ahead of patient safety.
Genuinely struggling to find sufficient superlatives to describe the
@HackettOfficial
gig at Brighton last night. Just epic! Once again awestruck by the stunning musicianship. Beautiful lighting by
@CurranLighting
too. And the best bit; the gig was filmed! Get in!!!
@RMatthewsPsyEdu
@masic_uk
I don't know many Obstetricians, Urogynaecologists, Urologists, Colorectal Surgeons or Neonatalogists / Paediatricians who would put a water-birth very high on their pregnancy / delivery wish-lists; what does that tell you? 🤔
The dawn of another deeply depressing day for UK Maternity services. CQC warn that 'harm at risk of being NORMALISED in Maternity care.' What a woeful, gravely worrying and damning indictment.
Over 16 months CQC inspected 131 Mat Units; many that it had been least worried about.
So......CQC declared by
@wesstreeting
to be 'unfit for purpose.' This follows after HSIB were similarly found-out, rebranded with major leadership restructuring. Amid major ongoing concerns about both the GMC and NMC. Is it any wonder that the NHS is in such an astonishing mess?
How utterly depressing is this? What is actually working with our once great country that it takes formal Judicial Inquiries to actually uncover and reveal the truth?
#PostOfficeInquiry

'Sometimes babies just die...'Sometimes people just don't do their jobs properly. Yet another tragic and avoidable maternity disaster caused, it appears, by negligent CTG misinterpretation and failure to act. Heartfelt condolences to these incredibly brave parents.

Fiona Winser and Dan Ramm tell Newsnight about the quality of care they received at hospital when their baby died shortly after birth.
#Newsnight
Never did I think that I would live to see the day when CQC would make such a condemning assessment of UK Maternity care standards. What a thoroughly depressing day. 😕
Yet another tragic example of a life and career destroyed by senior NHS management for whistleblowing and 'doing the right thing' in the interest of patient safety. Placing reputational protection well ahead of patient safety concern. Destroy the messenger.
“I tried to have those conversations with the managers of The Christie and I was always met with a brick wall”

Wow! No messing from Mr Streeting. That definitive response should bring several senior NHS managers, both locally and nationally, out in a rather uncomfortable cold sweat. And so it should.........
👀 Quite a definitive response to our
@Telegraph
NHS Whistleblowers investigation from
@wesstreeting
: “Senior leaders who silence whistleblowers will be sacked – and they will not work in the NHS again. I can’t emphasise this strongly enough.”
Peter I would argue that it has the potential to totally eclipse the Post Office scandal. In fact, it surely has already......Just how many innocent lives have been avoidably lost in the deficient Maternity service alone? And how many parents' futures entirely wrecked?
@GMB
Well done
@GMB
for publicising this. The cover up culture, misleading of patients/relatives & malicious targeting of whistleblowers is endemic in the NHS. Scandals like mid-Staffs, Nottingham, Letby etc won't stop until this is sorted. This has the potential to be the next P.O.
A brilliant dramatisation by ITV. Tragically the very same destructive techniques are routinely deployed against whistleblowers who dare to take on other Government-funded institutions, such as the NHS and Nuclear Industry.
ITV at 9.00, the first of a four part dramatisation of the most widespread miscarriage of justice in English legal history. Hundreds of lives ruined, no one yet called to account. It will make your blood run cold then boil. Mr Bates And The Post Office
#PostOfficeScandal
Just take a moment to reflect on the gravity of this; the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman stated that 'Parient safety is not held in as high esteem as the reputation of the Trust.' Now, just take that in and consider the potential ramifications of that.....🤔

A suggestion; how about making this statement the philosophy of care for every single UK Maternity Unit for 2021? A ground-breaking New Year's resolution!
@DOckendenLtd
@silv24
@Mercifull
And let's please not forget on Father's Day, that it isn't just the mother who suffers the harm that this misinformed nonsense causes.
It simply beggars belief doesn't it Fiona? A fit, young lady does not bleed to death without obvious symptoms (which it appears she described to her 'carers', perfectly) and deterioration in cardinal clinical signs (raised pulse decreased BP, tachypnoea) Absolutely tragic. Again!
@DivyaTalwar1
A failure to follow a simple escalation policy, again. Neglect, again. Lives destroyed, again. Thinking of this family and especially the 5 children whose Mummy should be here. If only they had given Laura-Jane the basic medical attention that she deserved, rather than a biscuit.
Withholding and doctoring critical documents. 'Disingenuous and unconvincing' NHS Trust witness evidence where 'truth was an alien concept.' 'Misleading,' 'lying' and a 'behind the scenes conspiracy.' My, this all sounds rather familiar. But this ETJ did the decent thing!
Hoorah! After having fought, against huge resistance, to reach this point, for nearly 20 yrs, this really does feel like a massive achievement and a watershed moment for UK Mat services There can surely be no coinc that this 'leaks' just before the Ockenden report is published?
Gosh, who'd have thought it? Doctoring and withholding critical evidence, incomplete Disclosure and subsequently misleading a Court of Justice seem to be serious offences; equating to Perjury and Perverting the Course of Justice. Who'd have thought it? 🤔
And yet another tragic and entirely avoidable disaster caused by negligent mismanagement and uterine rupture. Clinical complacency and naive attempts to normalise pathology are huge current risks in UK Maternity practice. Sincere condolences to the poor family 💔
Quite possibly because these of us who raise such concerns and similar ones, related to patient and staff safety in Maternity care, end up losing our jobs and careers as a direct consequence of doing so. I strongly suspect this puts others off. Can't really blame them tbh
Spot on by the out-going Health Service Ombudsman. But what exactly, if anything, has happened since this astonishing declaration and exposé back in March? Precisely.....nothing. Meanwhile, more lives are lost, more patients are avoidably harmed and more cover-ups occur.
'It happens at all levels'
The Health Service Ombudsman for England has accused the NHS of a 'cover up' culture which is leading to 'avoidable' deaths.
Yet another 'Neglect' verdict in a tragic Maternity case leading to a post-partum maternal death from haemorrhage. How has UK Maternity care been allowed to become this bad?
Mother died after neglect by Broomfield Hospital staff;BBC News; tragically Laura Jane a mother of 5 did not receive the most basic of careAn Article 2 inquest into her death concluded neglect. A privilege to act for the family with
@camilla_browne
Ah, so a brave whistleblower, yet again, is responsible for blowing this utter mess out of the water. Sooner or later someone in power in this country will genuinely realise and value what major benefit whistleblowers play in uncovering deficiencies, dangers and corruption

Gosh, this all sounds rather tragically familiar. Senior Trust Managers 'failed in their responsibility' to act despite serious concerns about patient safety being raised by whistleblowers. Did the WBs suffer the usual detriments I wonder?
A confidential report by

says leaders at Great Ormond Street "manifestly failed in their responsibility" and staff concerns were repeatedly dismissed with managers "shirking their responsibility". This poor culture extended to the trust board 3/4
@catherineroyuk
If that is genuinely true then it really makes me concerned as to what level of basic medical training midwives are getting. How can you look after pre-eclamptic or post CS patients without basic knowledge of fluid balance? Beats me.....
Great to see further focus on the plight of NHS whistleblowers by
@denis_campbell
in the Guardian,including a mention of my recent case,where I highlighted genuine and subseq proven maternity patient and staff safety concerns. Over to you
@wesstreeting
Well,
@wesstreeting
, I and thousands of other NHS whistlebowers, are hoping that your actions, should you be elected, will match your words. And many toxic senior NHS managers, who place their and their organisations' reputations ahead of patient and staff safety, will be quaking
A culture that silences brave NHS staff who act as whistleblowers and puts protecting the reputation of the NHS over protecting patients has got to stop.
Labour will put patient care first, protect whistleblowers and sack those who try to silence them👇🏻
@EmilyJBarley
@HHFTnhs
Emily, I am genuinely speechless. How insensitive. Inhumane. The temerity to blame you, rather than realising it was inappropriate to use that woke terminology in the first place. 😕🥺
Can you think of any other business or organisation, led by a large group of six-figure salary earning senior executives, that would be permitted to deteriorate to a status as bad as the NHS has descended into and to the point where most, including the S of S....
What are your thoughts on this from a Sunday Times reader? It has a tempting appeal, but if the awful culture exists now without the serious consequences proposed, how bad could it get if we did this?

An excellent and insightful LBC interview by

Last Sunday I caught up with LBC's Nick Abbot to tell him about what it's like raising concerns in the NHS and then the British legal system - think Post Office Scandal meets ER!!
Full interview is below. It sets out the importance of my legal update.

Can you give more info about how ELCS and EMCS differ? Of course with EMCS some labouring has been done too, so that's harder.
I know the anaesthetic is often different, depending on the cat EMCS. I'm imagining the surgical method is different too when every second counts?
I find it absolutely staggering that no-one in the Judiciary, throughout all of this, at any point thought 'Why are the PO appointing so many SPMs that are 'criminals?' The stunning increase in prosections coincident with Horizon's launch wasn't exactly rocket science!

Anyone even heard what judges say to convicted persons?
Post Office inquiry should hear from all judges who did the sentencing
But why oh why, does it take, time and time again, the dogged and determined persistence of grieving parents to make a difference, to force appropriate investigation and to, hopefully, force something that comes close to representing genuine and meaningful accountability?

'I was very unwell and desperate to be listened to.'
An independent investigation found that Tanya's baby Ashton, who was stillborn, should have lived if they'd received adequate maternity care.
An eloquent and polished presentation by Peter Duffy detailing his torrid and career terminating experiences as a persecuted and victimised NHS whistleblower. What a tragic waste of a skilled, dedicated, hugely experienced and integrous senior NHS Consultant.

@nickwallis
Absolutely rife in the NHS sadly. It's a total disgrace. Harmed patients and whistleblowers alike are watching the PO inquiry with bated breath. Salivating at the thought of NHS bosses getting a clinical quizzing by Jason Beer KC or an expose by you! Believe me-LOTs of material!
An astonishing sequence of responses. No regret. No remorse. No insight. No reflection. No apology. I wonder if AVdeB has ever considered a career in NHS Senior Management? 🤔
Lying in court, under oath, is perjury. It damn well should 'destroy reputations, careers and freedom.' Such action should cause 'years of expensive stress and publicity,' commonly exactly what their legal adversaries have been forced to contend with. They should be locked up.
This needs to happen a lot more. It will drive home to people that lying in court can destroy their reputation, career, & freedom & that a life with a criminal record impacts travel etc. At a minimum being prosecuted will cause years of expensive stress & publicity.
Another critically important Maternity crisis story covered with compassion and great sensitivity by

I would urge anyone who is considering a vaginal breech delivery to ask how many such deliveries the individual conducting the delivery had undertaken and how many adverse outcomes they had had. But what minimum number would you view as being 'experienced enough' to go ahead?🤔
Not before time. A frankly astonishing achievement. Can't believe that this would have happened without your involvement
@nickwallis
and the ITV Mr Bates v The Post Office dramatisation. What about taking on whistleblower victimisation and persecution as your next project Nick?
A brave Midwifery whistleblower reporting what, I am absolutely certainly, countless others across the country are feeling and experiencing, but are simply too intimidated and scared to speak out. What a terrible state UK Maternity services have, tragically, descended into.
Such corrupt and deceitful practices are common- place in NHS Employment Tribunals, fully supported and encouraged, it seems, by the legal system surrounding it, to the direct detriment of NHS whistleblowers. It has to stop. Hats off to this ETK for calling it out. For once....

@MartynPitman
We want to understand too. Our subject access request reveals some me truly awful attitudes and behaviours. We say incompatible with professional registration. There should be hundreds of WB letters to the board from obs consultants but we suspect there are not
For sure that is also true. But most first time mothers have not a clue how they will cope with contraction pain and should therefore, surely, be counselled to 'keep an open mind' re use of analgesia options rather than being actively encouraged / coerced to labour...

Thanks to David Hencke for his continued interest and support and for giving, what I believe, is a critically important Maternity patient safety issue a platform.
This successful, recent Constructive Dismissal Employment Tribunal case makes for rather chilling and familiar reading. A senior, experienced and respected Transplant Surgeon victimised and persecuted out of his post following his whistleblowing of significant pt safety concerns
Condemning interview with out-going NHS Ombudsman, related to the toxic and damaging 'cover-up culture' in the NHS and victimisation and persecution of whistleblowers. Somewhat contradicts the message given out by NHS Trusts, NHSE and the Regulators.
