Fun fact: Santa Monica rebranded their bus system after a tragic incident in which a terrorist rigged a bomb to one of their buses and set it to explode once the bus dropped below 50 miles per hour.

🎉ICYMI: Work on the “S-Line” project, a passenger rail line from Raleigh, N.C., to Richmond, VA., is officially underway.
Once complete, this new route will save travelers an estimated 90 minutes per trip and form a key link in the SE Corridor.

Route planning is /excellent/
Elevated track through Center City* is so smart
Lots of demand due to proximity to major job centers such as Merkato, Africa's largest marketplace
Addis Ababa Light Rail, Ethopia.
~20 mi of mostly grade-separated tramway. Opened in 2015.
A good example of chosing the wrong tool for the job. Overcrowding and an unproven design led to more than half of trams unoperable by 2023.

This is faster than the 11 minutes it takes to ride on the SFO AirTrain from Terminal 3 to the Rental Car Center.

Testing of the new NJ TRANSIT multi-levels train cars is moving along! The new cars feature increased seating capacity and other amenities, including USB charging ports & new onboard information displays.
The new railcars are expected in late 2024 for testing and commissioning!

My favorite wacky moment in Amtrak history is when Indiana was too cheap to subsidize Amtrak to run the Hoosier state so they subsidized a freight railroad to do it. It lasted this way for about a year, went back to Amtrak and a few months later they stopped funding the Hoosier..

I'm sorry - just three years ago it was pretty nightmarish getting anywhere on transit. I respect that LA has thrown itself into building transit at a faster rate than most cities, but it's not like most cities - it's huge and sprawly and is nowhere close to what it needs.
A lot of people don’t realize LA massively expanded transit coverage and haven’t updated their mental model of the city since the early 00s

Streetcars really aren't practical for most stuff anymore. Back in the day they were basically light rail or buses. But it's stuff like this that shows me they still have a place: high-capacity short-distance street level transit. Nothing else can do this quite as well.
