For 20 years our core survey has focused on the law student experience. Now, LSSSE is excited to announce a new multi-year research project aimed at understanding and addressing the challenges and experiences faced by law school faculty and staff through two new surveys!
My most recent attempt:
Atty: What’s your profession?
Me: Teacher.
Atty: What do you teach?
Me: Law.
Atty: Which courses?
Me: Civ Pro. And Evidence.
…
Judge: Juror, we thank and excuse you.
@meeradeo
Last time I was called warned (me retired cop). Q: Anyone know the defendant? A: Yes. Q:How do you know him? A: I arrested him for the robbery charge that gave him the felony conviction that made this possession of a firearm by a felon.
Judge: Entire pool DQ.
That was 20 yrs ago
Most attorneys don’t want the jurors “tainted” by a fellow juror who may explain the law differently than what they get from trial. No outside info is best. A lawyer who gets on the jury often ends up the foreperson for exactly this reason. So we get struck 🤷🏽♀️
@meeradeo
I’m curious why they wouldn’t want an attorney or professor to sit on a jury? I feel like they’d be great, informed, understand how important it would be to be impartial. Would anyone explain to me why they would dismiss you? Thanks!
@meeradeo
My most recent attempt:
Make it through voir dire, despite saying I teach crim law & crim pro.
Next break, marshal says come with me.
In chambers, judge: Are you the dean of our local law school?
Me: Yes.
Judge: Well, you are excused of course. But how am I doing out there?
If you think

isn’t realistic, you missed Tyler’s pearls in E6: “Who does the firm value? Dan. Why? Bc he makes them money. Why? Bc he was born into money. That’s who always ends up on top. The system was not built for us. And the cycle just continues & continues.”
Some personal news: after avoiding wheat, sugar, cheese, milk & more + exercising & stretching every day + drinking enough water & getting 6.5 hrs of sleep each night over the past 6 wks, the new me has no measurable difference from the old me. Plz don’t let me do this again.

Y'ALL! I made it to the courthouse as a juror! When I checked in online last night, my group had been called to the courthouse for today. Will try to live tweet how it's going. NB: still unlikely I'll be selected. /1
Profs: I highly recommend emailing students who did a great job in class to let them know you’re impressed. It’s quick & easy—usually takes me <10 mins/wk. And they are so appreciative. Plus (see below), it’s a great way to increase confidence, participation, and engagement!

I’m on call this week! Luckily, I’m not teaching. Also confident that if brought in I’ll be dismissed immediately. Nobody wants a Civ Pro + Evidence professor on the jury ☹️
Students remind us that law schools share the blame: "We cannot allow these legal institutions to continue producing race-illiterate lawyers." They've got solns too:
1) Intellectual honesty
2) Diverse faculty
3) Race across the curriculum
4) Persistence
I am thrilled to share my election to
@AmLawInst
. My empirical research centers the voices of marginalized and non-traditional participants in legal education and the legal profession, highlighting the ongoing need for greater diversity, equity, and inclusion.
We are thrilled to welcome our newly elected members who will bring their expertise, and add their voices to the important and ongoing work of the Institute.

My first class meets Wed. So far I've gotten three emails from students. One from a WOC addressed to "Professor Deo" + two from men addressed to "Ms. Deo" and "Professor Meera"....

You know why I didn’t write about

? Because I didn’t find any. Instead, like in this article, my data show that “it wasn’t a lack of self-confidence that held [women of color] back. It was repeatedly facing systemic racism & bias.”
Congratulations to Professor Catherine Carpenter, now the inaugural Honorable Arleigh M. and William T. Woods Chair, and Professor Meera E. Deo, the inaugural Honorable Vaino Spencer Chair on their new positions!

GOOD NEWS: we should arrive LAX in 5 hrs, after an extra 2 days of airport surfing & thousands of €€€ & $$$. My skills as a lawyer helped every step of the way—not as a litigator, but as an advocate who knows what to say & whom to ask. I’m privileged, frustrated, grateful. /13
WE LANDED! To end the saga, our
@Delta
plane blew tires on landing so we were on tarmac b/w 2 active runways as fire crew investigated & mechanics changed tires. Deplaning now. Appropriate conclusion to a fraught journey. Thx all for your support, suggestions & concern. 🙏🏼 /14
Obviously, I’m devastated. It feels like a rejection of my lived experience & my life’s work. But also I’m uplifted by personal msgs—from HS besties, law school friends, legal ed colleagues—offering support, validating my research, and reminding me that we will fight on together.
ME? I’m inspired by

I appreciate *so much* that you recognize how this is the norm for women--definitely on Twitter but also in professional circles, on student evals, and at faculty meetings.

It’s tempting to call out individual bad actors. And we should. But keep in mind racism is a STRUCTURAL problem, even in law schools. Firing one person caught on camera doesn’t signal meaningful progress. We also need to implement systemic anti-racist policies.
#UnequalProfession
My dear ones, can you find a few moments for yourself today —to practice yoga, walk in nature, play with your dog, or take a few deep breaths? The road is long and we need you.
I had to take a leave of absence without pay to write

bc my former institution simultaneously 1) increased service & teaching obligations, 2) reduced pay, and 3) eliminated sabbaticals. My 1st sabbatical—in 13 yrs of law teaching—will be next year.
There is far more inequality in academia than you think. If you are at a resource-poor institution, you likely are unaware of all the resources available at rich ones. If you are at a well-resourced institution, you likely have no idea you have access to things others don't.
On the 5th day of Diwali we celebrate siblings! To enjoy Bhao Bhiz, siblings offer prayers for long life, trade gifts, and spend time together. It’s a unique holiday that honors this special bond. Hope you all find ways to celebrate your siblings today!

Friends! "Better than BIPOC" is now out in Law & Inequality. I argue we should use "people of color" in comparisons w/whites, "women of color" w.r.t. raceXgender intersectionality, and disaggregate further ("Black," "Latina," "Chinese Am") when relevant to the data or cause. /1
Library faculty (and Legal Writing, Clinical, Academic Support, Bar Prep) are professors too. Give them the salary—and title, and respect, and security—they have earned.
What cases from 1L/core upper level courses COULD lead to fabulous "diversity discussions" (classroom convos re race, gender, SES, sexual orientation, disability) tho the case book doesn't raise these implications? So, the prof or students would have to bring it up.
Every caregiver, mother, WOC, or untenured prof in my empirical study
#PandemicEffects
on Legal Academia had MUCH LESS TIME for writing given the pivot to online learning & greater demands (at work + home) on their time. So who's able to write more? And whose voices are missing?
PS our juror summons (waiting) area has a dozen charging stations w cords attached, half a dozen power strips, free WiFi, two “quiet rooms,” a lactation room, bathrooms, water fountain/bottle filling, staffed info window, and cafeteria just outside. Nice attention to detail! /14
PS Juries are fascinating, but most of my research is on legal education, racial representation, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. I also Tweet pix of my cute dog & tasty food. If any of that interests you, follow along or read on for more.
IT'S OUT! My

Hi, friends. We’re on break. LOTS of thoughts but not sure what I can share while the case is ongoing. For now, I’m excited to be in the room where it happens, taking copious notes by hand, and thinking about what I’ll bring back to my students. /12
I've consulted w/2 law profs at 2 different schools in the past 2 days. Both quoted to me deans who'd asked them to take it "on faith" that they'd be appropriately compensated LATER for time spent working NOW.
That's not how it works, my friends.

Everyone I know with family in India is suffering. Most of us have lost multiple loved ones in just weeks (my family too). We are far away. We can’t pay final respects. We are woken in the night by calls or greeted in the morning with sorrowful texts. Be kind.

At 7:03 I got a very disappointing grant rejection. 30 mins later, I opened the door to neighbors dropping off a stunning bouquet of flowers from their garden. Unbeknownst to us all, they were working on this gift to me just when I needed it most. Thank you, universe!!
I have the data! It reveals the *opposite* of what this article states. Law prof moms balance scholarship, service, teaching & parenting by pulling all-nighters to give feedback & taking mental health hits to be team players. They need more SUPPORT, not attacks.
#PandemicEffects
Some thoughts re the NW lawsuit: The complaint is full of drivel & lies. But the public & personal attacks on women, POC, and esp WOC are still awful. And I’m not surprised. I wrote a WHOLE BOOK about raceXgender bias in legal academia. It. Is. Systemic.
Shout out to editors of
@nyulawreview
! I declined their offer to publish my

essay, but welcomed feedback. They said profs rarely ask & happily did a quick call to share FAB suggestions. No ego, just gratitude. The piece is better for it.
I’ve had this *exact* experience in data collection! Toddlers on laps during Zoom interviews, baby monitor next to research participant, kids banging on locked door while interviewee insists she’ll ignore it for once. And the moms just persist through it all.
#PandemicEffects
Nearly every interview I’ve done w/moms this week has kids popping in to say hi, moms still in gym clothes and sweaty, calls from cars or closets (me too!), or a pause to make a snack.
Every man I’ve interviewed was in a quiet office space and was not interrupted once.
I can tell you that 1) I’m the only one who walked a mile in the heat w a backpack to secure a $12 kale salad (worth it); and 2) the federal courthouse is more grand and beautiful than state. Heading back in. /13
It is incredibly meaningful to hear a Supreme Court Justice nominee, a woman of color, acknowledge the personal challenges of navigating work and motherhood. We need this perspective on the highest court!

I'm a law prof & seasoned public speaker. I'm an expert on legal ed & the legal profession. I teach future lawyers about court procedures, incl voir dire. I took a whole course on Juries. And yet, I WAS NERVOUS ANSWERING QUESTIONS UNDER OATH, IN A COURTROOM, BEFORE A JUDGE! /23

Most women law faculty are “accidental professors,” folks with the skills and expertise to excel in legal academia who just hadn’t considered this a viable path for themselves. Imagine who would join us if we made academia more accessible!
