Now that the job market dust has settled, I’m elated to share that I’m headed to
@Yale
. I’ll be a CSAP postdoc for 2024–2025, then an Assistant Professor of Political Science beginning in 2025. I couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity & all who helped me get here.
A couple clarifying points.
First, he was a postdoc at UCLA when he taught my class and when we went out. Not TT/faculty.
Second, I fully consented to go out with him, although I now realize that it was completely inappropriate for him to ask me out in the first place.
Five years later & I’m Dr. Meisels! So grateful for the support & mentorship of my absolutely killer dissertation committee: Larry Bartels, Alan Wiseman, Danielle Thomsen, & especially my chair, Josh Clinton.
Male academics, I’m begging you: think long and hard about what you’re doing, or most likely *not* doing, to protect your female colleagues & students from creeps in your department.
7-8 am: get ready
8-9 am: breakfast
9am - 7pm: match met gala couture to political science cover art
7-8pm: dinner
Can someone who is good at time management please help me, my family is dying
We attended a private Jewish school until I began 6th grade & my brother began 4th grade. Like clockwork, when my brother mentioned that we’re Jewish, a new classmate replied that “the Jews killed Jesus”
Jews who went to public school or have children in public school, if you're comfortable, reply to this sharing a time you had someone else's religion imposed on you through "secular" public schools.
🧵Fresh draft alert:
tl;dr: I develop a measure of 2016–2022 primary House candidates’ campaign positions using original issue text data from campaign websites. Estimates are dynamic + based directly on candidates’ own rhetoric.
Since tweeting this, I have received TONS of DMs from female academics thanking me for speaking out & expressing their desire to someday do the same. I cannot begin to express my anger & disappointment on behalf of those who cannot come forward for fear of retribution.
Wow, I am completely overwhelmed with this outpouring of support. Please know that I see all of your messages & I feel your love.
I was hesitant to speak out because I felt small & weak & embarrassed that I allowed him to emotionally abuse me for over a year. Not anymore.
Seems bad. Especially puzzling in light of
@VanderbiltU
’s — in particular, the current administration’s — initiatives & rhetoric re: upholding 1st amendment principles.
Clicked on the link: 404 not found. Tried to look up my polling location elsewhere on the website: error. It is Election Day & it appears that no voting info is available on the TN Secretary of State website.
Just… absolutely unacceptable.
RIGHT NOW: An “ERROR OCCURRED” message if you put in your address to get voting info on the Tennessee state website.
Secretary of Voter Suppression
@sectrehargett
really outdoing himself this year! What a disaster. 🗳 🇺🇸
While escorting patients at Planned Parenthood this AM, I was called a “death-scort”, told I’m going to burn in hell, & I’m helping murder kids. On the bright side, the retiree I volunteered with told me he turns his hearing aids off so he can’t hear the protestors 👑
Just an FYI for grad students attending MPSA, my advisor received this extremely... strange email. Do we need to stay under the direct supervision of our other committee members at the conference as well?
I, as a rational voter, voted for the candidate closest to me on the unidimensional ideological continuum. Your vote choice was based on shark attacks (Achen & Bartels 2016). We are not the same

DID YOU KNOW: Beginning tomorrow, it is Buy-Every-Graduate-Student-You-Know-A-Bottle-Of-Wine Week! For legal reasons, everyone is required to participate
To all my new followers: welcome, & I hope you enjoy my regular programming which includes tweeting about data science, academia, politics, Judaism, & making fun of the GOP
Considering incorporating ANES survey wording into my personal everyday interactions, e.g. "Thinking about what we should do for dinner tonight, would you prefer salad, pasta, chicken, or haven't you thought much about this?"
I try not to brag but uhhhh this semester was obviously a complete dumpster fire, & yet I still managed to get phenomenal grades in a full load of classes & (most importantly?) was a good enough TA to receive this end-of-semester email
🎉 My job market paper, “Campaign Agendas and Issue Group Strategy in Congressional Primaries,” has won the award for best paper presented at APSA 2023 from the Political Organizations and Parties section. Huge thanks to POP & the award committee!
Paper:
Everyone at school: is portland really like portlandia?
Me: [thinking of every time I've come to a four way stop at the same time as another car & both of us refuse to go first] no
Some exciting professional news: I'll be a visiting scholar at the Democracy Center
@UofR
in March 2023. Huge thanks to the lovely folks at
@RochesterPolSci
who helped make it happen, especially

The Supreme Court & clinic harassers may be pulling out all the stops, but clinic escorts are still doing what we can to help patients feel safe, protected, & affirmed
Might delete my Instagram so that I stop stumbling upon college acquaintances going to Disneyland, then subsequently spending my entire day wondering if I’ve just imagined a pandemic for the past few months
As a social scientist my soul leaves my body every time I see a conservative acquaintance post something like “the average age of people who die from covid is 80”
I'm a huge proponent of celebrating even the smallest of wins, so I'm pretty excited that my first academic article made it past desk rejection!! Posting this for posterity in case all reviewers recommend rejection :'-)
In my final academic year at Vanderbilt, I'm extremely honored to be 1 of 33
@VUGradSchool
students to receive the Provost Pathbreaking Discovery Award and 1 of 3 to receive the Outstanding Doctoral Student Award.
Really pleased that my article with Josh Clinton & Greg Huber, Giving to the Extreme? Experimental Evidence on Donor Response to Candidate and District Characteristics, is now on
@BJPolS
FirstView. And it's OA due to
@VanderbiltU
's agreement w/ Cambridge!
POV: you’re a political scientist volunteering as a patient escort at Planned Parenthood & a clinic harasser yells at you to “do some research” on the politics of abortion
🚨JMP alert:
I evaluate competing theoretical predictions re: single-issue interest groups' contribution strategies in primaries by combining original data on House candidates' issue priorities, FEC receipts, & various within-candidate research designs.
Decided to pull a manuscript that was still awaiting reviewer assignment six months after submission (+ no response from editor). Unfortunately, I've heard worse stories than mine!
