How can domestic abuse survivors get through family law court?
@Imane_E
and I share our experiences here on how we navigated years in court. We hope you feel less alone through reading it.
#CoerciveControl
occurs even after separation. Few professionals 'see' it. Even when a perp is uncooperative, aggressive + blocks important decisions. It is still labelled 'parental conflict'. This shows lack of awareness + training.
#Train
the professionals to support victims.
Today, finished paying exorbitant solicitor fees from 3 yrs of

Sinead's son was separated from her by family court when he was 10. She was his only caregiver and fought 5 years for supervised contact. The impact this had can now be fully seen and felt. You were always a beacon of light and truth in the face of systemic abuse. Rest in power.
For all the Mothers stuck in
#FamilyCourt
. These last few weeks of sittings are chaotic and exhausting. Hoping to get a hearing, to have children returned home- The system is wrong and greedy. Reach out, speak up 💜
#ZeroTolerance
The career opportunities that are lost to women when in an abusive relationship are startling. Look at these stats. We need to get better at seeing the signs of abuse and supporting the career paths of those suffering. I speak from experience.
I am truly humbled by the number of survivors I have heard from in the last 24 hours and the stories that have been generously shared.
We never wanted to be the warriors we have had to be but my goodness I have never known a more determined and dynamic community seeking justice.
It is more common than you know. One of our research participants was banned by the judge near to the final hearing 'of including anything at all on domestic abuse'. Not even allowed to include those terms. Imagine the retraumatisation.
Domestic violence survivor is told abuse is 'irrelevant' in family court
'Describing the impact the case has had on her, she said: I would say it’s soul destroying. It’s absolute humiliation. The order itself is insanity.'
@ChiOnwurah
@ChiOnwurah
I have an email telling me I am banned from face to face surgery with you - without ever seeing you at a slot. That is undemocratic rather than the protests against your lazy conduct. Or is it actually because I'm Palestinian and you have no compassion for Gazans?
Want to see behind the scenes of the English family law court? Here's my article - a very personal account of my experience as a
#domesticabuse
survivor. Hard to write, harder to share. So many kind messages since it has been out, which always helps😊
Imagine doing the front line work for change and supporting survivors to access justice in family law courts against all odds...then being attacked by your own colleagues.
@DrProudman
thank you for all you do.
As a female barrister advocating on behalf of victims of male violence, I've faced misogyny & threats from barristers.
From being called a c*** to attempts to disbar me, they've thrown dozens of complaints my way.
I won't be silenced.
I am speaking up to advocate for change 🪡
We are about to start our survivor-led vlogs, with working groups of domestic abuse survivors and family law practitioners taking place next week.
There are still some places left, please share, and get in touch if you would like to participate. We would appreciate your insights.
The shorter life spans, long term health conditions and loss of life that domestic abuse survivors suffer requires urgent attention. We know some of the cases. But this really is the tip of the iceberg.
A BBC investigation has found that at least five women have died after family courts allowed fathers accused of abuse to apply for contact with their children.
Some took their own lives, and one had a heart attack outside a court.
Dr Elizabeth Dalgarno discusses with
@BBCNuala
10 massively important changes needed in the family courts. Each one essential and interlinked. Spotlight also on the continual push for the Hague convention to include CLEAR defence against summary return of children in DA cases. Thank you

How we are treated at work has a massive impact when we are living through
#DomesticAbuse
. More needs to be done to understand and support staff. Employers need to know how crucial the work space is for us. Keeping our jobs and identity outside the home is a lifeline.
“A troubling reality: legal aid changes have cut a critical lifeline for vulnerable women inc. survivors of domestic + sexual abuse + asylum-seeking women, leaving them without legal support in the face of discrimination, violence and housing insecurity."
Thank you
@BBC
@BBCNews
@EdThomasNews
@SheraFamily
for exposing the reality of everyday trauma in family courts for DA survivors. Usually behind closed doors...reporting is CRUCIAL. DA researchers receive complaints/trolling when we share truth. OPEN UP THE COURTS to scrutiny.
Incredibly important thread. We hear every day of mothers being protective of their children due to a domestic abuse context, being labelled and stigmatised in the family law system. This is despite children now being seen as victims in their own right. Thank you
@DrEmmaKatz
Mothers who support their children in relation to their father's domestic abuse are often told they are 'being emotionally inappropriate', 'oversharing', or 'alienating'.
A thread on why this way of thinking is WRONG 🧵
Mediation assumes 2 reasonable adults willing to find solution. Abusers don't work that way. Pushing parents into mediation is dangerous. I tried shuttle mediation, his 1st request was to be in the same room! Abusers don't want solutions, they want access to the victim.
There’s a push for mediation between parents in cases of domestic abuse. I agree with
@womensaid
, rather than supporting parents to reach a genuine child focused agreement, mediation can be used to further an imbalance of power and post-separation control.
Help!
Mother needs pro bono representation for Court of Appeal hearing end of Oct. Preferably London based, expert in
#DomesticAbuse
and experienced in winning appeals.
She is fighting hard.
Please share and send me over any leads.
Thank you.
#familylaw
Crucial to keep listening to survivor experiences of court when they are effectively silenced on many fronts, the impact of trauma used against them, and court culture continues to retraumatise and label mothers who are recovering from abuse.
“survivors’ lived experiences described how perpetrators were able to harness the legal mechanism of child removal and use it as a form of post-separation coercive control, often supported by the expert”. 👏👏
@RachaelGrey2022
This was after 3 years of already paying fees from 2018-2021 - somewhere between £500 and 1k every month. Then 2021-2023 paying the remainder after court ended. Many years of financial stress and worry. 6 yrs of solictor and barrister fees. Done. Thank goodness.
I ended 2023 with the absolute privilege of working with
@SheraFamily
and
@FiLiAHagueMums
It is a call for change in family law courts and couldn't have been written without brave survivors sharing their experiences of the courts failing them. Let 2024 bring that change!
We thank

Honouring all the mothers navigating family law court today. Mothering through trauma, abuse and struggle is the hardest. Sending love to all of you, especially to those of you bereaved, separated from your children and fleeing violence and seeking protection.
#DomesticAbuse
An excellent call we hope this is agreed. The same is also needed in
#familycourt
. Transcriptions should be provided free of charge and provided verbatim from independent companies rather than edited by judges.
#16DaysOfActivism
In the last 2 days the debunked parental alienation card has been drawn. His tshirt has PA logo, handing out leaflets @ school. Leaflet to my child (!) who quickly identified that 8/14 of the PA 'behaviours' listed are being enacted by him. Awful. Sad. Enough.
@JudiciaryUK
This advises support for the person but doesn't consider why navigating family law court can lead to suicide. There are a raft of reasons
#harmreport
Unless they are addressed, people will continue to be retraumatised through court + lives lost.
#DomesticAbuse
The Family Justice Council Working Group, Death by Suicide within Family Proceedings: Awareness and support, has prepared an information sheet for professionals working in the court system.
1st working group of survivors happened today. So much to discuss on knowledge gaps before court, support needed during court and impact after court. Grateful for their time, expertise, and commitment to creating something with us that supports other survivors.
Powerful session on

from the brilliant
@Rachel_SUTDA
for us
@NorthumbriaUni
. Huge takeaways and insights from her lived experience + blown away by her work for change. As she said today "nothing is changing in the courts" even after Harm Report. Change is overdue.
@DrProudman
It was done without her knowledge. She was told they wouldn't show anything but just to remove her underwear to give the illusion of nudity. First she knew was in a room full of lawyers and execs seeing the frame. Then a judge used the coerced scene to remove custody her child.
If you have received a message targeting me (screenshots + confusing narrative) you have my apologies. Someone has taken issue with my research. I don't understand their narrative or purpose. They are sending this into the inboxes of survivors - simply not acceptable.
Delighted to be co-leading a new interdisciplinary research theme on gendered violence and abuse

I am concerned, disappointed and shocked that government ministers can name individual academics publicly and that you are following their orders.
This...
Then telling the court and being disbelieved repeatedly.
Exhausting...
Feeling the pressure from abuser and the court system.
Retraumatisation...
Both making decisions + minimising the extent of impact on the child. How can this be justified as in 'best interests'?
'"Piecing her back together after these visitation weekends is a battle... I’m just physically and emotionally exhausted".
The experience of being essentially powerless to keep her daughter safe amid she and her ex's visitation and custody battle has brought the mom to a
When reading this case it is clear there was a split in recommendations. The child's guardian recommends 50:50 contact and the judge overrules influenced by the evidence of Karen Woodall (unregulated expert). The secondary school aged child removed from her mother (LiP).

It's such a hard decision. I personally openly shared I had PTSD in court and got some support from GP. It was ignored completely by court and downplayed as if untrue. But I am aware it could have gone another way.

Grateful today. Bright spots in amongst the stuff us survivors live. A chat with a member of our working group was so meaningful, and full of knowing for the experiences we have both lived. Being seen and understood matters. I felt better knowing she just got it and vice versa.

Here we are lined up ready for the procession and at the end our students got a lively send-off. Humbling to think of their journeys through covid and to the present day.
Important work
@TriciaCanning
on experiences of reporting abuse. It shows that most of the respondents were being abused whilst not living with the perpetrator, + that in many cases the situation was worse after reporting/did not change. Interested to see the next stage.
Here is the preliminary findings to the survey I shared a few months ago. I don’t think many will be surprised by the findings.
Victims’ and survivors’ responses to a survey on DA, language use, and policing (March 2023)
@TriciaCanning
Capturing the feeling post teaching on
#DomesticAbuse
to police degree apprentices
@NorthumbriaUni
Important, insightful + open discussion centring survivors, busting stereotypes, challenges/ barriers to justice + policing culture. A privilege to represent. This is why I teach.
No matter how long it is since you escaped, the abuser can get to you + cause harm. It can be at handover at a designated 'safe' place. Every interaction holds risk and children witness this and are harmed. When it happens again, it hits like a brick wall + there is no recourse.
Please sign this petition. It costs hundreds to get transcriptions of your own hearing (priced by the hour). Transcripts can be edited by judges if they see fit. So domestic abuse survivors are paying for an edited account of what actually happened in the court space.
For me to hold the judge accountable of what she and others said about me in court I would have to fork out thousands of pounds. I won’t get Justice until people are held accountable. Make court transcripts free for victims.
Check out the work of
@FiLiAHagueMums
, so glad to be working in their team for the change needed. This interview with
@DrEmmaKatz
on her work and the Hague Mothers campaign is fascinating:
I know the dread of the post arriving from

@HCCH_TheHague
This open letter, signed by a powerhouse of allies, sets out the issues and change needed.
@FiLiAHagueMums
brings us together for Hague Mothers and Children.
The role of GPs are crucial for DA support. If GPs note allegations + put this in writing it can be used in court + with professionals (e.g. school). Victims need GPs for support and referrals, inc perpetrator pathways. The flip side = GP records used against victims in court.
'How can
#GPs
send perpetrators of
#abuse
to specialist intervention if none are available?...the whole issue of
#VAWG
needs to go up the political agenda...these are not 'nice to haves' if we want a safe society for everyone to live in, our sector is on it's knees'
@JoTodd4
@jadewelshy
There is common mispercerption that custody is skewed towards the mother. In my experience it is exact opposite. Court decisions center the father-child relationship. The prevailing principle of preserving this relationship overrides safety of both child and mother in DA cases.
So very powerful.
#DomesticAbuse
doesn't end. It is a lonely path.
"You now have to fight with the demons in your own head, something I wish I could fight for you.
Please darling girl, don’t let the demons win."
Just sent out the programme for our TIME FOR CHANGE co-design workshop.
28 knock-out attendees: Hague mums, lawyers, DV professionals, court support activists, academics, DA Commissioner's staff, Shadow Minister for VAW, psychologists, expert witnesses.
This will be epic! 💜🔥💚
@AnnaMcMorrin
Thank you for sharing so openly. I'm sorry this is happening. Coercive control needs to be recognised more widely so that we are not tackling this solo. Professionals need to understand what we are facing. Sending solidarity.
Today I was attended by a PC, the approach to policing domestic abuse was perfect. Towards the end we realised I had taught them on DA in the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship online

Finally, the post-separation amendment is live. Check out FAQs
@SEAresource
. Survivors endure PS abuse everyday; legal action/threats + enforced child contact. Impacting children, finances and mental health. This amendment needs to be enforced.
The post-separation abuse amendment has finally come into force. This is a vital step forward in protecting victim-survivors from ongoing abuse and controlling behaviours. If you want to know how this change may affect you, check out our FAQ resource
Finally the basic right to have support in family law court set out in a practice direction. It is still possible for the other side to object. At least now it will have to be more than the verbal 'no' I received in the corridor every time I asked (from opposing council).
Highly important new practice direction about the attendance at any family court hearing of independent domestic violence advisers/independent sexual violence advisers as support to litigants at all levels of the Family Court. Brilliant news for victims.
