Labs in Belfast working flat out, 7 days a week for many weeks now, to increase testing capacity. Have made progress from 30-60 a day early Jan to >200/day currently and hope to be moving to 500/day in Belfast very soon. Plus 2 other trusts working on own testing.

Just so any cancer patient in a palliative care situation is very clear. There is NO evidence that anything you eat or don’t eat influences your disease. So eat what you enjoy when you feel like it & don’t waste precious time with any ill-founded guilt for doing so.

Whereas my mum on diagnosis of type 2 diabetes not requiring any medication seemed to perceive advice that she needed to have a snack mid morning to stop her “going low” 🤷♀️ I have never quite managed to undo that notion, 20 years later! But at nearly 90 whatever keeps her happy.

Today I cried in court. I was watching 3 lovely, articulate, passionate young women (the older 2 just out of their teens) come to terms with the fact that their Dad was going to die. Doctors believed that continuing life-sustaining treatment was not in his best interests.

Nonsense. Specificity of RT-PCR for SARS-CoV is excellent and false positive rate very low. Sensitivity (and therefore false negatives) can be more of an issue. Lower illness rates reflect the demographic currently getting infected.

I asked a kind surgical colleague for her opinion about a strange deepish ‘spot’ I noticed high up on my chest wall. She FNAed it there and then - transpired to be a 6mm grade 3 carcinoma with lymphovascular invasion already. Easter 2010. Thank you, SR, won’t ever forget that.

Said to my running mate Áine just this morning that I firmly believe exercise is the answer to life, the universe & everything. The 1st thing I prescribe my type 2 diabetes patients is a waterproof jacket & walking shoes so they can get out the door, no excuses. So many benefits.

Thank you very much for this, Sonia. Lab scientists (in all lab disciplines) are undoubtedly under-appreciated in the main. Knowledgeable, skilled, helpful and every bit as patient-centred as frontline staff.

Thought it was past time to give a shout out to all the laboratory scientists (BMSes, MLAs, etc) who are the unsung heroes in our hospitals. Without them there would be no lab tests. They prefer thanks in the form of coffee I’m told...

dietitians are fabulous - highly-skilled & key MDT members. I have had the privilege of close working with them over the years in diabetes, obesity, inherited metabolic disorders, intestinal failure, PN team, eating disorders, renal stones. Invaluable. Thank you.

Totally agree Conall - he is doing the job of a Health Minister for all the population with no party politicising or oneupmanship. No sign of any political background. Must be an uphill battle.
