I used to get annoyed when students called me “Miss” instead of “Prof” or “Dr. Schwortz” bc I thought they were denigrating my honors. Turns out I didn’t realize, it is a term of respect among many Black/Brown/inner city US people, and I had to get over my cultural imperialism.

FYI it’s a myth that you have to burn a flag once it’s touched the ground. You only need to dispose of it once it’s no longer fit for display (and can’t be cleaned/repaired). Burning is “preferable”, but there are other options.

Also, in some cultures eye contact can be seen as challenging the speaker, so making eye contact while someone talks is DISrespectful.
And of course, people in power can use claims about your eye contact or lack thereof as something to grab onto to abuse their targets.
I was in a workshop the other day where someone was detailing how they, compared to others, show respect by not fidgeting and keeping eye-contact with people.

My understanding of the term “Gen Y” is that it was originally applied to the generation now called Millennials (since that’d be right after Gen X), and that the term isn’t really used for anyone now. But generation terms (and years) are fluid mostly, so it could change.

My mother was told if she ever got pregnant again she would die. She gets to talk about it however she wants. It’s not anti-feminist to say pregnancy is a huge risk that can cause permanent negative changes to the pregnant person’s body. It reinforces the importance of *choice*.

I’m a community college prof. From what I’ve seen the US military takes advantage of vulnerable people and turns many of them into rapists and murders, and others into PTSD-wrecked shells of their former selves. A rare few do learn important job skills and find careers. Rarely.
