It's finally official, the whole family is heading to Chile for a research sabbatical / remote work. Flying south on October 20th! Looking forward to a break from the norm ✈️
After traveling cross country so in laws could “see the grandkids”, I just got scolded by MIL in front of everyone for opening the wrong container of blueberries when 6 asked for some.
So I left.
My resolution is to expect to be treated w/respect. It’s simple.

Just received an email telling us that I can’t require someone meeting with me in my office at work to wear a mask. Um… there will be a sign going up on my door and a basket of masks left next to it. People with unvaccinated kids have rights too.

We did that once accidentally on a flight and discovered it mid-air. Had to use pads from airplane restroom for our 6 mo old for 12 hrs. But to original tweeter’s point it’s incredible periods are still so taboo. How do these deeply offended people think they came into the world?
Instead of worrying about my full inbox after a week-long break, I'm going to be happy about this.
My timeline is pretty typical of female academics who have kids, slow start while they are little, things improve once we have time to think.

P & T letter came this afternoon from
@osufwcs
, and their recommendation to the Dean unanimously supports promotion to Assoc. Professor w/ tenure.
Needless to say, I don't need any additional gifts this holiday season!!
Me in happy shock celebrating with virtual confetti:
Was feeling a bit glum due to a sinus infection, and then this dropped in my inbox ...
'The College of Ag Sciences and Dean support your promotion to Associate Professor with indefinite tenure. Your dossier and letters will now be forwarded to the Provost.'
Alrighty then!
And because it's been super easy to be a parent during the pandemic, someone at OSU has decided to make a big deal about bringing kids to work with you on occasion and has notified EH&S ... so that's cool.
Does this someone have children, no.
I'm so tired.

Publish a review / synthesis paper on your area of research expertise sooner rather than later, bc you know more about it and have more recent knowledge now than you will at any other point in your career.
And I think it stings more after parenting two kids through a pandemic, they didn’t just magically appear at your house at the end of 2022 healthy and happy.
Sorry for the NYE vent but this mama has had enough. Here’s to a better 2023.
One week after kids returned to school with mask mandate nixxed, we all have

Our two masked kids had no chance vs a whole school of mostly unmasked teachers / students.

Well it's always good to wake up on a random Wednesday in the middle of a pandemic to discover that the peer-reviewed literature says you are propping up the patriarchy by mentoring female graduate students.

Sending kids to school each day (no online option) in kf94s and crossing our fingers. What a time to be a parent. Thinking of everyone else out there also trying to focus on work in the midst of this surge.

So we had a talk about how not to let that happen to her. Starting early.

Dear adults ...
Please remember what it was like to be 11, and do not comment on a pre-teen's appearance or compare them to another pre-teen.
Notably, this also applies to humans of all age groups.
Thank you,

A challenge unfolding in groups I work with ... over 60 yrs old - YES, I'm fully vaccinated, let's meet in person soon! ... under 45 yrs old - um, no not vaccinated yet, nor are my kids? Worried about new inequities this creates, esp. for parents

The many men who think they are feminists but can't detect subtle disrespect, gaslighting or implicit bias, may be doing just as much damage to women's progress in the workplace, esp. in academia, as the few who are outright misogynists.
@500womensci
When you are worried bc 5 came home in a surgical mask (from school) instead of the better kf94 she was wearing in the morning, because she got lunch on it (bc she's only 5), and you realize that being a kindergartner is kind of ridiculous right now.

Missing since Sunday, my brother William A. Brander (Wil), age 40.
Last seen in York, PA where he'd been living w/ my dad. Worried about his mental state, also not vaccinated.
Pls share widely, esp. in PA/NJ/DE/MD/NY. Rpt was filed. Thank you💔

When you’re worried about 6th grader you had to leave home alone for a no school day, and she remembers to feed the tortoise and puts away a grocery delivery without being asked, you feel like maybe you didn’t totally screw up this parenting thing 😃
@Momademia
After doing everything you could to protect your family for 2+ yrs from Covid, aside from quitting your job, and getting it anyway, some start to treat you like you were never careful to begin with. It’s a hard time to be a mom, judgement at every single turn

recommendations on masking, this is all terrifying.
If one more person who is done raising their kids goes on and on in a meeting about how much better things are with the pandemic now, I may scream.
