Absolutely thrilled to announce that I will be joining the Psychology Department at Loyola University Chicago (my freaking alma mater!) as an Assistant Professor in the Fall!!! :D :D
I never do this on here but I am furious with
@Uber
. I ordered a car for a trans friend because her phone was dead. The driver kicked her out because she’s trans and then spun a sexual harassment story to cover himself. I am now banned for life.
My friend was kicked out in the rain downtown at 5am with no phone and had to walk to the metra to get home. It took two hours. Imagine how scary that was.
Trans people deserve to feel safe in rideshares. But unfortunately many do not. And
@Uber
believes the driver over the passenger with zero proof and zero regard for transphobia or other systems of power.
I’ve tried contacting support many times and have never gotten through. Please share if you can and I hope I can reach someone to let them know they have a virulently transphobic driver and a resolution process that needs work.
@Uber
@Uber_Support
I don't think people outside of academia understand how much time we actually spend finding citations for things like "happiness is good for you" and "racism is bad."
My first academic job market cycle has now officially been unsuccessful. 2 phone interviews, 1 campus visit, but 0 offers. Hundreds of hours and dozens of applications and nothing. And I’m supposed to do this all again? Several times maybe?? Send help.
Maybe it’s just me but instead of encouraging women/femmes to make their emails more masculine (e.g., removing “I think”, “just,” “sorry,” “does that make sense?”), why don’t we encourage men to have more humility and an ethic of care?? 🤔🤔
I went SO SO long (eight years of doing research!) without any first-author publications that it seriously affected my self-esteem.
Now I have had 3 published in the PAST WEEK. Why is academia like the most painfully slow roller coaster in the world?!?
They reactivated my account! Support suddenly cared after the traction this tweet got. I hope this means the driver is getting fired but I doubt it. Needless to say I will be avoiding using Uber when I can.
I’ve heard from many others of unacceptable behavior from drivers and their inability to actually talk to support instead of a bot. I really hope that changes and they take marginalized riders’ experiences seriously.
I'm just a nonbinary grad student, standing in front of social psychologists asking them to please not say "X% women" and assuming the audience infers that the remaining are men.

Sometimes I see talk about people "socialized as boys" or "socialized as girls" to reference AMAB and AFAB people. I would politely request you to Stop. Trans and nonbinary people largely do not experience socialization in the same ways as cis people. (thread)
Have you moved to a new city with zero social connections? How did you build your social network? Also if you know anyone in Montreal who wants a fun, nerdy friend send them my way :)
I'm making a reading list for my transition from post doc to assistant prof. Is there anything you've read that really helped you think about teaching, research, and/or mentoring at the faculty level? Top 2 on my list are currently bell hooks' Teaching to Transgress and...

How can we ask about and code gender/sex in surveys?
@SarivanAnders
and I developed new survey questions and a framework we call the Gender/Sex 3x3.

SO happy to announce I have accepted a postdoc offer with Drs. Alexa Martin-Storey and Jean-Pascal Lemelin at the Université de Sherbrooke where I will be working on projects about gender presentation, stigma, and mental health in children and adolescents! Canada here I come!
So incredibly happy to announce that I successfully defended my dissertation 😭😭 The defense discussion was so fun and enriching. Thank you as always to my incredible advisor
@SarivanAnders
for her tireless and brilliant support of my work. WE DID IT!!
Wore this cute little vintage number to teach my first Queer Psychology course of the semester! Students didn't know it was a dress but I did and it gave me so much power 😏
When I was 19 I told one of my best friends at the time that I wanted to become a professor and somewhat incredulously she said, "So you're gonna be a little twink professor??" It's haunted me to this day.
And now I get to say YES I AM going to be a little twink professor 😜
It's official! My faculty page!! 😍 Check it out to see what kinds of things are tickling my brain right now. I'm also recruiting a PhD student for the fall 2024 cycle so if you know anyone looking for a mentor doing queer psychology work pls forward!
My first dissertation study was just accepted for publication!! :D “A little shiny gender breakthrough”: Community understandings of gender euphoria.

Does anyone else experience discipline envy? At times I find reading work on gender and sexuality from sociology or the humanities much more enjoyable than from psych. Might be bc psych has a lot further to go in its understanding of queer and trans ppl... but ugh!
Update: I got the courage up to introduce myself to my neighbors and they ended up being a queer collective of radical thinkers. I’m going to their Rosh Hashanah celebration tonight. I’m so happy ☺️☺️
Have you moved to a new city with zero social connections? How did you build your social network? Also if you know anyone in Montreal who wants a fun, nerdy friend send them my way :)
I'll be teaching Psych of Gender for the first time in the fall and I'm SO excited. Any recommendations for textbooks, especially ones that center diversity and intersectionality?
Perhaps unpopular opinion, but the lit review is one of my favorite parts of writing. I feel like a detective finding clues to weave together in an evolving mystery.
Many TNB people report being gender nonconforming (in relation to their sex assigned at birth) from a very early age. This often (but not always) results in concern and punishment from parents, bullying from peers, self-hatred, and more. Things not experienced by many cis folks.
So, a person who is raised as a boy but is not a boy does not often receive the same socialization, either from outside themselves or from within themselves, as a boy who is raised as a boy and is a boy. People who think otherwise are endorsing social essentialism.
When I hear these phrases I also often see an unspoken whiteness attributed to the gender socialization in question. What kinds of boys and girls are you imagining when you think about normative gender socialization?
I understand that sometimes we use phrases for brevity that gesture to a general socialization pattern. But I think it's useful to interrogate what aspects of socialization we actually mean and how that differs across gender trajectory, race/ethnicity, etc.
My first academic job market season is fast approaching (already here??) and I'm wondering from those who have survived this treacherous terrain: What were your best emotional resources and practices to help get you through it??
For me, being nonbinary is about freedom--freedom from norms, freedom to express, and freedom for all.
No matter how you identify, I wish for everyone the freedom to live authentically and with abandon.
Happy

from my many genders!
My second co-authored publication just came out!! :D In it, we ask the question: What happens when you ask cisgender heterosexual individuals in-depth questions about their sexualities and genders (facilitated by sexual configurations theory)?
Even if TNB do not outwardly express their genders, we socialize OURSELVES in ways consistent with our internal sense of our gender (as likely most people do). Many narratives from TNB folks demonstrate this, as does science:
I wasn't sure if it'd be worth it to travel back to Michigan for graduation but I'm SO glad I did. It was so fun celebrating everyone's hard work and success. Also the wizard robes!!!
Today at the
#SPSP2021
gender pre-conference I'll be talking about the Gender/Sex 3x3 and the gender/sex questions we've created based on this framework. So excited to be part of what is already turning out to be an incredible set of talks! 🥰
Was just approved to teach my OWN COURSE next semester. I literally could not be more stoked (or nervous!!). Coming Winter 2020: Psych 401- Queer Psychology 😃🌈
Just taught my last class of my first semester as an Assistant Prof and I couldn't be prouder of my students. Look at all they learned! It was a tough one for me and them for so many reasons but the students truly made it worth it 💜
Our gender euphoria paper is out! In this project, participants generously shared their joyful experiences of gender euphoria with us (thread below). Co-authors:

If you’re an instructor, do you find yourself mentally rehearsing for the classroom at the most random times? Like I will literally be dancing at a club at 1am and be thinking about how I might teach about the evolution of sex differences.
I love how in academia you can spend an hour writing and produce groundbreaking knowledge and insights, and then the next hour you spend trying to save a figure as an image in PowerPoint and fail miserably.
My first project of grad school is FINALLY OUT! In it, we created “heatmaps” using sexual configurations theory to visualize the diversity of gender/sex between and within categories (thread below). Co-authors:

Incredibly honored to have won the Outstanding Student Paper Award from

! This is for my dissertation work on gender pleasure with
@SarivanAnders
which I can't WAIT to share with y'all when (yes WHEN🤞) we publish it 😊
The rumors (that I started) are true!! I'm on the job market!! I study the diverse ways people experience their genders and sexualities, including "gender pleasure" (when gender feels good) and inventing new inclusive methods. CV here:
So, hi! I have two amazing students who are going on the job market:
@SaraBChadwick
, a former student, and
@WillBeischel
, a current one. I have a more formal letter of recommendation but YOU SHOULD HIRE THEM AND HERE'S WHY!
So much of my time and energy last semester was spent on the job market that I almost forgot that I kind of love my research?? Like, reading through people’s experiences of gender pleasure, making sense of them, theorizing about gender. It’s so fun.
Recently learned that our gender euphoria article is being assigned in a Queering Social Work class and I wasn't quite ready for the amazing feels that would bring. Like I almost cried at how cool that is?!?
I don't think cis people truly understand the depths of the metaphors trans and nonbinary people use to describe their genders. Some faves I've heard in my research and life: a Magritte painting, an unknown Pokemon, gender retired, a fairy skyscraper. (1/3)
I'm trying Research Rabbit for the first time as I'm conducting a new lit review and I cannot overstate how incredible it is. Especially when connected to Zotero. This feels like the future 😭 100x better than google scholar!
Research Rabbit is an incredible tool that FAST-TRACKS your research. Best part: it's FREE.
But most academics don't know about it.
Here's how to get started 👇

, specifically genderfluid! I have what I call a "gender portfolio" that I love to move through and explore, largely via makeup, outfits, and glamour. And yes, Maleficent is one of my genders okay!!!
The participants in my study on gender/sex diversity identified with 46 different terms in case anyone wanted to know the definitive number of genders.
Sometimes I daydream about future classes I might teach. My current one is Psychology of Performance, co-taught with a theatre professor. We’d cover topics like gender performativity, “performance anxiety” during sex, performance artists’ and actors’ insights into emotion…
I just laughed out loud at this student's email: "I apologize for missing lecture, but I was at a Fleetwood Mac concert. If you think about it, Fleetwood Mac provides many great examples of both consensual and non-consensual non-monogamy!"
Trans and nonbinary people: what would you wish cis allies did to make your lives easier? A student asked me and I have ideas but would rather crowdsource ideas. Thanks in advance 💜
How can science be nonbinary? My new blog post for
@FeministVoices
tries to answer this question! I'm feeling a bit vulnerable because it's quite personal, but I'm choosing to embrace the vulnerability and be proud of it :)
Successfully defended my prospectus!! I feel absolutely blessed to have a brilliant committee who asked such insightful questions. Now to, you know, do the diss 😅

I'm running my very first meeting for my lab today! Gah!!
What's something you do in your lab that's made it fun/enjoyable for people to be there? Or anything I should avoid doing? :)
I'll be teaching diversity-related psychology courses, conducting queer research, mentoring PhD students, and working towards a more equitable academy. And all in the city that has my heart: Chicago. I can hardly believe how well it all worked out 😭😭
This is my FIRST first-authored paper to come out!! :D Check out the thread for some neat cartoon videos we made to explain diagrams from sexual configurations theory. Use them in your research! Classroom! At home for fun!!!
If you're interested in gender/sex & sexual diversity, consider checking out our new paper: Translating knowledge of sexual configurations theory via instructional videos!

On Thanksgiving my 3 year old cousin asked her mom if I was a boy or girl because I had earrings on. The mom responded "Does it matter?" and she said "...I guess not!" and kept playing. That's how easy it is!
Also I have the best family 😊❤️
I've recently discovered that I do my best writing in the afternoon, but I'd been trying to force a morning schedule because I'd heard "that's what productive people do." Where my afternoon/evening people at?? We're productive too!!!

has decided to charge students for STI tests as a revenue-generating scheme. Students will need to either pay out of pocket (barrier), buy their own insurance (barrier) or have their private insurance billed, which would show up to parents (barrier). This is unacceptable.
As of July 15th, all laboratory tests, including STI tests, will be sent to Michigan Medicine laboratories, and costs will be billed to students’ personal health insurance.

@Oprah
’s question is so indicative of the lack of discussion of trans joy in public discourse, media, and (I’ll say it!) research. Good on Oprah. This made me tear up 🥲
Just got an R&R that was positively GLOWING. Reviewers said it was a pleasure to read, thanked us for doing important work, and are excited to see the paper in print. When I tell you I WEPTTTT
Still thinking about

about perceptions of "bias" among scholars of color. Positivist psychology views being "detached" as the goal, but what does it mean to be "detached" from mass incarceration? From poverty?
We're recruiting researchers, educators, and clinicians for a new study on gender and sexuality! I'd love it if you could retweet and share widely :)
