Assistant Prof of Gender & Women’s Studies & Psychology | UW-Madison | Research on coercion, sexuality/orgasm, gender/LGBTQ, sexual health | (she/her) 🌈
When advising undergrads interested in a PhD, how does one be honest about the soul-sucking, hard work, undervalued/underpaid, poor job prospects part w/out becoming THAT prof they’ll later cite as “the one who discouraged me”? Somewhat facetious but it’s a real concern I have…
The exciting tenure-track position I thought I had is “on pause” indefinitely thanks to the economic downturn related to COVID-19. And, the postdoc spot I was pumped about - but declined for the tenure-track position - has been filled by another candidate. Talk about bummer town.
Thrilled to announce that I’ve accepted an Assistant Professor position in the Dept of Gender & Women’s Studies at
@UWMadison
!! I look forward to joining this wonderful, vibrant community, & to continuing my interdisciplinary feminist-psychological research on sexuality! Hurray!
I officially started as an Assistant Prof in Gender & Women’s Studies & Psych at
@UWMadison
! Woohoo!
Now I have QUESTIONS! Like, what are some maybe-I-wouldn’t-think-of items I need for my office?? What has helped you maximize research/teaching productivity/awesomeness??
Woohoo! Just got notice that I have been granted a joint appointment in
@UWPsych
! I’m officially going to be an Assistant Professor of Gender & Women’s Studies AND Psychology! Loving this support for my interdisciplinary work! 🙏🏻 🎉
Hi all, I wrote a blog post about my sexual harassment experiences as a sex researcher. Thank you to the authors of the harassment editorial for opening this conversation in our field, and special thanks to
@SarivanAnders
for always standing up for me!
I have accepted a postdoc in Population Health Sciences at the University of Central Florida, starting in 2021! I’m so excited to work with
@EricSchrimshaw
, who has already been an incredible supporter of my career. I’m sure we’ll do some great research together, so get ready!🤘🏻
Posting again! Gender & Women’s Studies at UW-Madison is hiring a new chair! 🎉 Full preferred but advanced Associate profs can apply! This is an exciting opportunity for us to bring in a new leader in feminist scholarship. Apps due Sept 16.
(1/11) I’m thrilled to announce our new theory paper: The Heteronormativity Theory of Low Sexual Desire in Women Partnered w/ Men! For a description of some of the paper’s 🔥 hypotheses (note: highly paraphrased/in my own words), see my thread below!
New paper! There's so much talk about low desire in women, the unspoken part being women *partnered with men*. What's up with that? "The Heteronormativity Theory of Low Sexual Desire in Women Partnered with Men."
Today was a day of many feats: I finished my dissertation, sent it to my committee, and finally got a “pacte civil de solidarité” with my partner! I have been working on the former for years and the latter for months, so I’m feeling prettttty yay right now. 🎉
I’m recruiting for an online study on sexuality! Participants must be 18+ & have had consensual partnered sex. The survey takes 10-15 minutes, is anonymous, & you could win a $25 Amazon gift card. Click for more info & to participate. Retweets appreciated!
A shocking number of papers I have reviewed lately don’t comment at all on the sexual identity breakdown of their sample. Isn’t the complete lack of acknowledgement of sexual diversity like SO outdated, at least in sex research?? I feel so naïve!
Our paper “Coercive sexual experiences that include orgasm predict neg psych, relationship, & sexual outcomes” was accepted in J of Interpersonal Violence! I learned SEM for this project & it was the first study I preregistered, so I’m thrilled to finally see it at this stage! 🎉
Mad about “angry feminists”? Too bad! Research from
@miriamsarwana
shows that women’s anticipatory anger regarding sexism predicts positive coping strategies, like expressing dissatisfaction and advocating for change. I.e., anger makes us STRONGER. 💪🏻
#SPSSICON19
In today’s plenary,
@DrDebNYC
told of a young woman who enjoyed giving oral sex only after her partner said he would never pressure her to do it. This reflects such a vital point: that the sexiest turn-on for women is often THE FREEDOM TO SAY NO WITHOUT CONSEQUENCE.
#SSSS2019
Yes, it’s true! I defended my dissertation yesterday (after delaying due to COVID-19)! Thanks to everyone who has supported my work & to my amazing advisor:
@SarivanAnders
. I defended from Paris, so: Voilà! A photo of my very French crew celebrating w/ baguettes & champagne. 🥂🎉
Hired my first lab coordinator recently & it’s AMAZING! I didn’t think I NEEDED one early on, but it’s making a huge difference for my productivity already! The lesson: if you get a TT job & run a lab, negotiate enough startup to hire someone starting Day 1! Now I have REGRETS.
From Dr. Allen’s morning plenary:
Kinsey: Hetero women will enjoy sex more if partners use techniques that lesbians use; I.e., spend time on bodily pleasure and the clitoris.
America’s response: KINSEY IS A COMMUNIST ATTEMPTING TO UNDERMINE THE AMERICAN FAMILY! 😱
#SSSS2019
How fun to announce that my paper on women's orgasms as a masculinity achievement for men with
@SarivanAnders
has reached 101 citations! Up next (but not out quite yet): Do men's orgasms function as a gendered achievement/failure for women?? Stay tuned!
(1/4) In 2017,
@SarivanAnders
& I found that women’s orgasms function as a masculinity achievement for men. Since then, many have asked, but how do men’s orgasms function for women?
Our NEW STUDY w D. Shuchat &
@SonEunju_ca
(🚨just out!) found that…
Gay men see
#bisexual
men as “secretly gay” and lesbians see bisexual women as “secretly straight”. In other words, the stereotype is that all bi-people are secretly just man-lovers. Interesting research from
@JesMatsick
and
@jenn_rubin
!
In today’s sexuality science class, students learned about the assumed authority of bioscience to consider how it shapes what we know about sexuality. So obvi I walked around with goggles & a beaker to show how it makes me *MoRe AuThOrItAtIvE*!!!! Wish I had a labcoat though! 😫
Hi all! I am recruiting participants of all gender/sex identities for an online study on relationships! You must be: 18+ & currently in a committed relationship for 6+ months. Participation takes ~25 min & is anonymous. Feel free to share/participate!!
.
Just submitted my final dissertation study for publication! 🎉 An innocent, more optimistic version of me designed it to force me to learn SEM, so it has been a JOURNEY. It’s also my first preregistered study! Crossing my fingers that all goes well!
Just got another positive RR (🎉) & one reviewer says multiple times that we should cite Chadwick & van Anders (the cites are anonymized so they can’t see that they’re there). So tempted to respond w/ “SURPISE!! It is I!! Behold our unmasked citations!”
Happy Valentine’s Day to my Psych of Human Sexuality undergrad class, who has their first big exam today on reproductive anatomy & other topics! To cheer them up, I’ll be handing out these valentines I made with their exams! Hope you all enjoy them, too! 😊❤️💕💜
Everything that’s going on in Florida is upsetting & everyone keeps telling me how great it is that I left. Please stop saying that. It doesn’t feel great and here’s why: a 🧵🪡🐊
Are you a BISEXUAL+ WOMAN (inclusively defined) who has had sexual experiences w partners of varying genders w/in the past 5 years? If so, we would love to interview you for a new study! If eligible (see poster), use the QR code or copy/paste the link & complete the contact form!
FYI I’ve been off emails for awhile & still won’t be back on for a few weeks! My spouse & I are in the midst of long overdue visits to family/friends & moving! Here we are, kitties & all, making our way north from Orlando, FL towards my new Assistant Prof position at
@UWMadison
.
Presented new work on orgasm coercion at
#SSSS2021
! We found that when partners were told that orgasm coercion tactics were unwanted/not working, 61% reacted negatively or w/more coercion. So, it seems that pressuring ppl to orgasm isn’t really about providing a pos experience...
To answer some questions: I had not yet signed an offer and the pause is not the hiring department’s fault (the University initiated it). The search chair seems really disappointed, too, and feels terrible about putting me in this situation! All that work and no new hire...
My research w/
@SarivanAnders
on “bad orgasm experiences” is now published! We found that orgasms during consensual sex DO NOT necessarily mean the sex or orgasm was wanted, the person was aroused, or that the sex was even enjoyable. For our summary, see:
Woohoo!! So exciting that our paper on the heteronormativity theory of low desire in women partnered with men received the Outstanding Theoretical Paper Award from
#SSSS2023
!
Just heard an amazing talk by
@SexDoctorSarah
on misconceptions about men’s sexual desire! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 According to men, they are not constantly DTF, sex is not just a physical need (it’s often emotional), and men don’t always prefer to be sexual initiators.
#CSRF2018
My amazing PhD student needs research funding! She has a fantastic project proposal for a qual study w bisexual women. Does anyone know of any grants she could apply to now? Perhaps LGBTQ-focused or just funds for grad student research?
Thanks for all of your support regarding my job situation. Posting about the disappointment and then seeing all of the likes and comments has actually been really comforting.
I also found comfort in revising this meme for myself? Sorry not sorry. 😎
New paper alert! 🚨 We analyzed 60 interviews w gay, bisexual, & other men who have sex with men to document the threats to sexual, physical, & psychological safety that GBMSM have experienced when meeting up w ppl from hookup apps. Some dark stuff, but so important to study!
New paper (and my first qualitative pub!) out in JSR describing negative sexual experiences among MSM using hook-up apps. Grateful for amazing collaborators

We finished (survived??) our first year as Assistant Professors in Gender & Women’s Studies at UW-Madison! Woohoo! So grateful to be in a cohort with

@UW_GndrWomenSt
I’m so honored to have won one of this year’s
#IASR2019
Student Research Development Awards! AND, I’m thrilled to hear that
@GauvinSteph
won the other one!! Thank you to the International Academy of Sex Research for your support.🤘🏻
I just wanted to take a moment to thank the University of Michigan for allowing us to keep access to all of our old emails. Most universities cut you off when you leave!! Being able to refer back to emails about research projects from years ago has been a LIFE SAVER!!
Remember, using conversations about my work to ref your personal pleasures/interests, esp when you’re a powerful man in a professional context, is sketchy/uncomfortable. Time to maybe re-visit my old blog post on harassment of women doing sex research?
I spent the last MONTH teaching myself structural equation modeling for a new study I’m working on. Today, I sent off my first full draft of the results! I’ve been excited to add SEM to my toolbox for awhile so:
YUSSS 😎🤘🏻I FINALLY DID IT! but also:
FYI if your “hilarious” anti-Trump meme portrays Trump supporters as “white trash,” it’s invoking classist stereotypes that degrade low-income individuals. Such memes also serve to ignore the responsibility of the wealthy in Trump’s rise to power! From Desiree Ryan at

Guided by

Very proud of my undergrad, Anna Brookens, who presented their thesis at the
@UWPsych
Research Showcase today! Findings showed that women & gender minorities who experienced sexual coercion from men partners had lower sexual desire for that partner, but not lower general desire!
Thinking of starting a stats YouTube channel where I translate equations/output into statements like: “this number is/is not chill, people used to care about this number but now they don’t, click here to watch statisticians fight each other in a researchgate comment thread.”
Fascinating research by Justin Preddie! Black gay men (BGM) are seen as less similar to “Men” than white gay men and are uniquely stereotyped as loud, nice, dramatic, & outgoing. Justin’s future work will consider what this means for BGM’s code-switching. 💯

For the last few days, ppl have been asking me very specific stats Qs that happen to be EXACTLY the things I know about in excruciating detail. Hoping this pattern continues so that I can adopt the coveted title (typically reserved for men) of *~LoCaL StAtS GeNiUs~* Muahahaha
How can a university evaluate you on productivity when BASIC research purchases take MONTHS to approve? I was supposed to have data to submit for the upcoming conference cycle, but my study hasn’t even launched. So no conferences for me? Really cool for my career, thanks! 🙄
Wishing there was a way that I could *lovingly* tell my students that the time and energy I spent meticulously grading their exams SUCKED OUT MY SOUL and so now I need to not talk to them for a few days. 😎
Headed to Queen’s University for a week to work with my advisor,
@SarivanAnders
! The border agent was confused about how I could be a PhD student in the U.S. with an advisor in Canada, and I felt very cool explaining that we are international sex-researching Skype pros. 🇨🇦🇺🇸
Just waiting at the bus stop and overheard an undergrad (not mine!) say that today in class they were learning about something called “orgasm coercion!”
My article with
@SarivanAnders
on orgasm coercion is FINALLY OUT!! This article is basically the “it” paper that names pressuring a partner to orgasm as a form of coercion! Our RR was under review for almost a year thanks to covid, so this feels great! 😊🎉

-1 tenured/open rank position (deadline: 10/8/24)
More info here:
Please RT and spread the word! Also happy to help with any questions.
NOT COOL! The

University Health Service will stop covering STI testing, forcing students to bill their parents' insurance & compromise confidentiality. That or students must pay out of pocket.
Ooooh, I just discovered this cool map called Everywhere Is Queer, which provides a constantly-updated online map to find queer-owned businesses! Love it!! 😍🏳️🌈🦄💅🏻
Oh hey so it’s not just that women aren’t “assertive” enough in negotiating salaries - they will in fact be perceived more negatively compared to men who do the same. Cool cool cool cool.
Thanks to the women who participated in the relationships study & to all who retweeted! We hit our recruitment goal for women so I deleted the tweet! Side note: I tried to find a gif of *awesome women showing up* but they were all sexualized. We can talk about that one later...
The Kinsey Institute leads the world on sex research, but Indiana lawmakers recently voted to defund it. It’s unfortunately another example of the US govt’s backlash against gender/sexual diversity & science. Great Op-Ed by Kinsey director
@DrJustinGarcia
:
@sarahvannier
Phew! That’s the approach I’ve been taking, but today I helped a student outright exclude a PhD from her interests and I had a moment of…oh I hope that was okay!! She said she was relieved to have narrowed things down though, so hoping that was a win!
Did you know that you can donate to Planned Parenthood & send a notification to Amy Coney Barrett? You can also say it’s in memory of Ruth Bader Ginsberg. I did it & enjoyed feeling a little snarky, so thought I’d share the idea in case you need a small pick-me-up, too...
Frustrated that your woman partner isn’t as into sex w you as she used to be?? Maybe it’s because she’s doing a ton of household labor, perceives it as unfair, &/or her caretaking of you mirrors taking care of a child! Great work by
@emilya_harris
@gormezaki
@SarivanAnders
! 🔥
1/ Is the housework divided equitably in your relationship? In a study published in Archives of Sexual Behavior,
@gormezaki
,
@SarivanAnders
, and I find that inequities in household labor are associated with women’s lower desire for their men partners.
Trauma anniversaries can elicit strong feelings of mourning for what was lost: people, opportunities, who we might have been. So, as we enter 1 year of COVID-19, let’s remember to show one another extra patience & compassion. We may be more “used to it” but it’s still been rough!

Curious about what feminism, queer, & science have in common & how they can come together in beautiful, exciting ways?? If so, check out our new paper:“Feminist and queer science: Principles for research with gender, sex, and sexuality in psychology and beyond!”
I am LOVING this article. “There’s kinky sex, and then there’s the thrill of deliberately not using a coaster on a table belonging to someone you hate.” 😂
Great talk by
@gormezaki
on visualizing norms across porn, fantasy, & in-person sexuality! What ppl see as normative for porn doesn’t necessarily overlap w/ in-person norms. Similar to how watching horror movies doesn’t mean you want to be chased around with a knife!
#SSSS2023

When “feminist” men sexually harass, they’re more likely to get the benefit of the doubt than other men. Specifically, research from
@dr_morganalw
showed that ppl are less likely to believe the reports of harassment & more likely to fault the woman who was harassed.
#SPSSICON19
Getting tested is already stigmatized, why create more barriers? Oh, UHS is being pressured to generate more revenue 🙄. The article says that this is a major service, which is why cutting it will save money. But like, maybe it’s a major service BECAUSE STUDENTS NEED IT?!
What is up with undergrads these days?? I asked when works best to have office hours (to try to ensure a max # of students can attend) & the majority said 3-5pm on FRIDAYS. When I was in undergrad, I hardcore avoided Friday meetings bc I wanted the longest weekend possible! 😂
WARNING: If you ever publish a new scale, you WILL be asked to review one million “new scale” papers later. Think endless talk on factors, loadings, rotations...😴. I’m happy to share my stats knowledge, but sometimes I’m just like, come onnn, lemme review something JUICY!!! Lol
Pleased that speakers at
#CSRF2018
like Carm de Santis and Action Canada are highlighting sex research as a political arena. We as researchers have an ethical responsibility to ask: do my conclusions reinforce stereotypes? promote dominant discourses? harm marginalized people?
Feeling thrilled after receiving positive reviews on a paper w/ some underpowered results!! Running underpowered stats can be unpopular, but hot take: findings are still meaningful if they point to useful ideas for future research & we are open/honest about the limitations. 🤘🏻
Our new study is out! 🚨🎉 I,
@JackieWoerner
, &
@EricSchrimshaw
used data from Pew to show that gay men & bi women generally experienced more non-assaultive psych & sexual abuse on- & offline than het & lesbian women & het & bi men.
I read this & am thrilled the new editor of Psych Science values & hopes to elevate qualitative & mixed methods! "Another potential growth area for PS is in the use of mixed methods. Qualitative methods are underused in psychology and would enhance many research projects."👏
Here’s my vision statement from my application for Editor in Chief of Psychological Science. I wrote it before getting the position, and my plans & goals are evolving now that I’m getting started. Look out for more concrete plans in an opening editorial!
Me wondering if the R&R I submitted almost a year ago (!!) will ever come back…😭
(Getting reviewers to complete their reviews during COVID has been rough to say the least…)
Just bought my plane ticket to this year’s

Hi, I’m on the job market (!!!). Please see this lovely thread that
@SarivanAnders
tweeted about why you should hire me (&
@ZSchudson
!) and/or tell me about cool tenure-track and postdoc opportunities. Thank you, Sari!! 😊
So, hi! I have two amazing students who are going on the job market:
@SaraBChadwick
&
@ZSchudson
(in alphabetical order!). While this is not my letter of recommendation, I seriously think you should consider hiring them for your position bc:
I feel unprepared to deal w the onslaught of student mental health issues. Sure, I provide flexibility, am understanding, report when concerned. But it’s a lot knowing that the basics of my job -deadlines/grades- can help push them over the edge when they’re having a hard time.☹️
I finally got to see
@JackieWoerner
of
@UCF_VAW
in action! Her research shows that messages advocating consent can trigger psych reactance, I.e. it can make men feel like their freedom is being limited. This predicts lower intentions to ask for consent during sex!🔥
