Shocking ableist ‘me, me, me’ article even for
@guardian
. NO mention of those living, working, shopping, waiting for buses etc on roads taking extra traffic from LTNs, or of disabled people who rely on cars struggling with the barriers
LTNs are causing delivery drivers (often delivering into LTNs) to drive more miles in more traffic causing increases n emissions as well affecting their livelihoods.
If
@MayorofLondon
really wants to reduce congestion in London, he needs to rethink the policy of replacing bus lanes with cycle lanes and get councils to remove all their LTN traffic relocation schemes pdq!
@SocEnvJustice
@PrivateEyeNews
Poor
@peterwalker99
Still defending unjust LTN traffic relocation schemes using ‘research’ from longtime LTN activists who have no care for the (generally poorer) folk living, working, using buses, going to school on roads taking traffic from LTN streets
@willnorman
But LTNs in London are NOT ‘well planned’ are they
@willnorman
? There is NO robust evidence that they reduce overall traffic, congestion, emissions or reduce road danger on surrounding roads is there?
@SocEnvJustice
Recent FOI shows LTN fines brought in £7 million. Council about to spend money prettying up LTN areas. Seems the lives of people living/working on the busier boundary roads, people with disabilities and those who drive for their livelihoods just don’t matter to
@LambethLabour
@GeorgeMonbiot
Could you list the benefits of LTNs for those who live, work, wait for buses etc on boundary roads taking 100s-1000s of extra vehicles/day from LTN streets? TiA
Even on a sunny morning in middle of the school holidays, no sign of kids playing in
#railtonltn
watched over by adoring parents on benches chatting over coffee. (cue
@LambethLabour
cllrs &
@lambeth_council
officers setting up a photo shoot to this effect)
#forcedcommunity
@clairekholland
Would be great if you could listen to ordinary working class residents raising concerns about LTNs. A difficult year has been more stressful for many people by the implemention of these schemes, and, contrary to what you might think we are not all mad right wing petrolheads...,
The real concern re ‘15 minute cities’ in the UK is that they are likely to be designed by the same (mainly white, male, middle class able bodied) people responsible for designing unjust LTN traffic diversion schemes, prioritising their own needs & wants over everyone else’s’.
NEW: The Department for Transport shifted to prioritising driving over cycling and walking in part due to worries about ‘15-minute cities’ based on conspiracy theories, documents seen by the Guardian show.
4 pages of waffle from
@lambeth_council
about why they are refusing to disclose how much PUBLIC MONEY they have spaffed on LTNs, parklets etc (info is not in public interest as it’s ‘commercially sensitive’). Do better
@BayoDosunmu
@clairekholland
. Escalating to
@ICOnews
@luhc
This staff bulletin from senior exec at
@lambeth_council
is beyond shocking. They really believe that it’s ok to push traffic from one set of residential/community roads to another set of community/residential roads Some children’s lives/lungs matter more than others it seems
Walking through Railton LTN border with S’peare North 1720 this evening. Would you be happy with your wife, sister, teenager doing this? Please help
@DrJacquiDyerMBE
@helenhayes_
@London_Cycles
How lovely for you. Have you spoken to the struggling BAME/Afro Carribean traders on Railton/Atlantic, one of whom spoke movingly at a council meeting at how he has been pushed to the brink of suicide by the loss of custom/no support from the Council?
@willnorman
@TfL
@willnorman
you and other LTN activists have been dismissing adverse impacts about LTNs and ill thought out cycle lanes for over 3 years. Surely it’s now time to take the concerns of ordinary working class Londoners seriously
@willnorman
@MayorofLondon
?
@neilchristiex
Oh
@neilchristiex
! Do you know how to critique ‘research’? Sample size tiny and self selected so cannot possibly be used to back up the case for LTNs.
I’m no Tory but it’s a bit rich for
@TransportActio2
to take govt to court for bypassing legal channels on ‘active travel’ when (mainly
@UKLabour
) councils have used every trick in the book to ram thru their NIMBY unjust LTN traffic relocation schemes
@LBLDemocracy
So
@lambeth_council
allowed proLTN campaigners to present a deputation on the ‘success’ of the SW LTNs but found several excuses not to hear a deputation re the adverse impacts/inadequate monitoring of the same LTN. Not exactly democratic is it?
@SocEnvJustice
The LTN nonsense in Dulwich makes this edition of
@PrivateEyeNews
. Lots more to come out re the duplicitous way
@LambethLabour
and
@SouthwarkLabour
Cllrs have forced through these greenwashing socially unjust schemes dreamt up by Gilligan, championed by Boris.
If
@LondonLabour
really wanted to build a better London for everyone they wld suspend ALL LTNs implemented during/since the pandemic, & carry out thorough review of the pos/neg impacts of these traffic relocation schemes before even thinking of reinstating them
@SocEnvJustice
@RezinaChowdhury
@RezinaChowdhury
Pls explain why it’s ok to displace traffic onto roads surrounding LTNs where poorer people tend to live, work, wait for buses, go to school, shop etc. TiA.
@willnorman
The problem
@willnorman
, is that you and others in authority dismiss those who have legitimate concerns about unjust discriminatory LowTrafficNeighbourhoods (soon to be 15 minute cities) as conspiracy theorists. They do not deserve such contempt.
@SocEnvJustice
@PrivateEyeNews
Good article in
@guardian
re the dire state of our streets/pavements Perhaps if
@LondonLabour
councils weren’t so obsessed with spaffing £millions on Gilligan/Johnson’s unjust LTN traffic relocation schemes, they wouldn’t be in such disrepair!
This is getting ridiculous. Seen today across the road from Tessa Jowell Health Centre obstructing access/egress for people getting on and the bus, some of whom have mobility impairments. Who is accountable for this? Bike hire companies or/and
@lb_southwark
?
@Southwark_News
@HaringeyCyclist
@HaringeyLiving
@mikehakata
When an Afro Carribean baker in Railton LTN told Cllrs he had been pushed to the brink of suicide due to the sudden drop in drive-by custom the advice was that he should achange his range of products to suit the (white, middle class, mainly male) cyclists whizzing past his shop!
Great piece from
@andrewellson
in
@thetimes
re chaos caused by traffic displaced by Streatham Wells LTN
ALL
@lambeth_council
’s LTNs result in long lasting traffic displacement onto surrounding roads & need to be removed ASAP.
@EllaRobertaFdn
@GeorgeMonbiot
Good idea. And then perhaps
@GeorgeMonbiot
could visit LTN boundary roads across London and see how the other half live and why people are so upset at having extra traffic re-routed onto roads they live, work, wait for buses etc on.
@RowChampion
As there’s no reliable evidence that LTNs reduce overall mileage driven, congestion, carbon emissions, pollution but there IS evidence of increased traffic on many residential/community roads around LTNs, who, in their right mind would support them?
@RossLydall
@SadiqKhan
None of the 2020 socially divisive LTNs are fit for purpose - they push extra traffic onto residential roads; increase miles driven, negating any possible ‘evaporation’ ; cause misery for people with limited mobility who rely on cars and those who drive for their livelihoods
Lambeth Council,
@clairekholland
@sustrans
colluded with Boris to push costly unjust LTN traffic relocation schemes. It’s clear from this piece that neither Lambeth Council nor
@sustrans
care about those living, working etc in the Traffic Sacrifice Zones.
@SocEnvJustice
@RowChampion
Hang on a sec, how can you say you care about the impacts of traffic on children when your LTNs increase traffic onto roads where children live, walk, wait for buses, go to school?
@Cavalierofinn2
Although Councils are largely to blame for the community division around LTNs, activists have been busy ‘othering’ anyone raising serious concerns. People campaigning against these environmentally & socially unjust schemes have thus become dehumanised which is deeply troubling.
So, public health advice in today’s High Pollution Alert is to avoid busy roads! What about those living, working, waiting for buses, shopping, going to school on roads made busier by neighbouring LTNs? How do they reduce their risks
@MayorofLondon
@NHSEngland
@NHSEnglandLDN
?
@haringeycouncil
So what about all those poor people living, working, shopping, waiting for buses etc on the roads taking 100s-1000s of extra vehicles a day from LTN streets. Don’t their lives matter?
@SocEnvJustice
On one of stormiest days of the year
@lambeth_council
send out emails encouraging people to cycle ‘whatever the weather’ featuring a pic of what appears to be a lovely sunny day!! You couldn’t make it up!
One wonders whether LTNs are the latest wheeze from Big Oil. Drivers of commercial, industrial, private vehicles now have to drive more miles around the barriers resulting in ⬆️ fuel consumption (and ⬆️ Carbon emissions, so hardly good for the planet)
2 more FOI refusals by
@lambeth_council
1) Railton LTN consultation results for people who ticked ‘I live here’ 2) results seperated by postcodes. Other councils have published this consultation data so assume
@lambethlabour
@clairekholland
have something to hide. Ref ICO.
@LambethLabour
Is this a joke?
@LambethLabour
have re-routed 1000s of vehicles from LTNs onto residential boundary roads where children live and walk to school at peak rush hour and want a medal for making the very end of the journey vehicle free and using green screens as sticking plasters??
14 month after FOI, ICO have forced
@lambeth_council
to disclose consultancy fees paid to
@sustrans
since 2018:>£400k! Looks like there was a plot to push NIMBY socially unjust greenwashing traffic/congestion relocation schemes WAY before Boris got on the bandwagon!
#LTNInquiry
@SocEnvJustice
Great to see that those campaigning for social and environmental justice over the last 2 years now have a national (apolitical) forum to come together to lobby govt/councils to review Boris’ NIMBY unjust greenwashing LTNs.
This is a great article about who gets listened to in Britain and who gets ignored. We can now add unjust LTN traffic relocation schemes to the list of establishment gaslighting of ordinary people highlighting injustice.
@kenanmalik
@eastoxbusiness
@memzbaron
This is peak middle class entitlement. ‘I want my LTN and NO ONE is going to stop me, least of all pesky working class shop keepers!’ It’s like nobody has ever said no to them in their privileged little lives.
@London_Cycles
Correction we are looking at people cycling through a low traffic neighbourhood with no care about the businesses destroyed (that they are not supporting) or those living, working, waiting for buses, shopping, going to school on the roads taking the displaced traffic.
Yet another school feeling the impact of the ridiculous Streatham Wells LTN. This time it’s Woodmansterne school, which is 2.5 miles away from the Streatham Wells LTN. “More pollution and having an adverse impact on our community” the newsletter states.
#Streatham
#LTN
There have been numerous complaints to
@lambeth_council
about the impact of LTN manufactured traffic on SEND transport over the last 3 years. All have fallen on deaf ears.
@RezinaChowdhury
@clairekholland
appear to lack any empathy for those worse off than themselves
Morning residents feedback: "It has taken my son 45mins so far to travel a distance you can walk in 5mins. He is on his SEND transport bus and highly distressed."
@JohnJohnStewart
Tx for writing this. Such a shame that
@guardian
which is usually so hot on social justice is ignoring the adverse impacts of LTNs. Tx too for putting your head above the parapet - not easy when the noisy minority of LTN activists are always mobilised to pounce.
@carltonreid
Think you will find many people opposing the injustices of LTNs are not far right but are proper such socialists. LTNs are in no way shape or form a socialist endeavour
@SocEnvJustice
@mikehakata
Wow! A Cllr actually admitting that he is happy to inflict pain on those living, working, walking, waiting the buses, shopping, going to school etc on roads taking extra traffic from LTN streets, as part of some warped social experiment? One for the Monitoring Officer perhaps?
@roadcc
@SocEnvJustice
merely pointed out that the video was insensitive given that traffic has been diverted from the LTN onto surrounding residential/community roads causing misery for many living, working, using buses outside the LTN. What is wrong with that?
Another report stating London tops the list of the most congested cities in the world.
@TomTom
measured traffic congestion in 390 cities. LTN traffic relocation schemes/ill-thought out cycle lanes not really working out
@MayorofLondon
@PrivateEyeNews
@willnorman
But LTNs in London are NOT ‘well planned’ are they
@willnorman
? There is NO robust evidence that they reduce overall traffic, congestion, emissions or reduce road danger on surrounding roads is there?
@SocEnvJustice
@AdamDKHarrison
So why isn’t there a pan-London plan to tackle traffic instead of individual councils trying to fly tip vehicles into each other’s boroughs?
@niamhck
@LambethLabour
@clairekholland
Lambeth’s own recent traffic reports show significant increases on many LTN periphery roads so they decided to count again whilst we were still technically in lockdown and Coldharbour Lane is shut! You really couldn’t make this up!
@Lambethgp
Following the weekend revelations Sustrans was handed £92m to introduce LTNs, its role in reviewing them must be cancelled by the Dept for Transport. Last month
@andrewellson
revealed in the Times Transport Secretary Mark Harper's shock Sustrans was part of the review team.
This fills me with despair So many London boroughs with high rates of destitution also have a huge wealth divide (eg Southwark, Hackney) yet their
@UKLabour
councils implement LTNs pushing traffic onto roads where poorer people more likely to live/work
@Cornwall111
@ioisours
Interesting, given that London Cycling Campaign are endorsing LTNs which are likely to breach the Equality Act intended to protect minority groups such as disabled, elderly, BAME people from discrimination.
After billions of investment in cycling during the Pandemic, cycling FALLS 4.4% across all age groups, reports
@Sport_England
in its national UK
#ActiveLives
survey.
By contrast, walking, despite being starved of investment by
@activetraveleng
, increased by 3.9%.
#Bang4Buck
@willnorman
How are LTN Traffic Sacrifice Zones helping those living, working, walking, waiting for buses, going to school on them? Pics taken 4pm yesterday. Busy HerneHill/Milkwood Rd vs deadly quiet
#railtonltn
/Shakespeare Rd How is this morally right?
@SocEnvJustice
@PrivateEyeNews
Who are the LTN designers who don’t think it necessary to assess fabric of roads B4 pushing traffic onto them from LTNs?
@Sustrans
?
@livingstreets
? London Cycling Campaign? Don’t
@lambeth_council
employ proper road/traffic engineers anymore or they overruled by LTN activists?
@lambeth_council
admits ‘some roads may become more heavily trafficked’ by LTNs which ‘may cause the condition of the carriageway to deteriorate at an increased rate’ yet no LTN specific assessments/inspections in place. Partly explains ⬆️ potholes/water main bursts of late.
This you
@BayoDosunmu
? Could you
@clairekholland
@RezinaChowdhury
explain why the lives/lungs of children living, walking, going to schools on roads taking extra traffic from LTN streets are collateral damage for those gifted quiet roads and clean air? TiA
Congratulations on the new job
@grantshapps
. Assume you will order an immediate suspension/review of Boris’ costly NIMBY unjust greenwashing LTNs that do nothing to reduce overall traffic/congestion, mileage driven, carbon emissions, and pollution.
#LTNInquiry

@hackneycouncil
@carowoodley

Looks almost as good as the one on Railton Rd, Brixton.(a few yards from beautiful Brockwell Park) Hackney & Lambeth - so many social issues and yet they choose to spend huge amounts of public money on Boris-approved unjust LTNs & ‘parklets’. I despair.
@YemisiAnifowose
@HitherGreenLab
@fbjunaid
@CllrMarkIngleby
@RedmondGarvey
You & your colleagues were so pleased to get into a car after your hard work you forgot that you pushed LTNs supposedly to reduce car use - shouldn’t you be setting an example and cycling/walking in all circumstances? Or perhaps LTNs are just private roads at taxpayers expense?
Watching
@LambethLabour
Cllrs (esp
@RezinaChowdhury
) deflect and avoid answering questions about the adverse impact of LTNs is just like watching the Tories in HOP dodging responsibility for austerity etc. A sad state of affairs.
@clairekholland
@lambeth_council
What did yr QC say in court about opening LTNs in emergencies? Traffic chaos today at Coldharbour Lane with 2 x huge water leaks & bridge-end of S’peare N completely blocked by roadworks for your LTN vanity project.

if

@MicheleRagusa6
Greenwashing unjust LTNs are a Gilligan/Johnson project championed by ‘me, me, me’ NIMBYS and PB chasing cyclists, facilitated by mainly Labour Cllrs, who should know better.
