With all respect, the USSR was a seamless continuation of the Russian empire. As a native of one of its thoroughly Russified colonies, I can attest that the concept of Russianness was installed everywhere and belonging to the Russian ethnicity and culture was highly desirable.

My father fought the Soviets for 5 years during WWII. He could not return to the country that he loved after losing the war. My grandfatherwho ran a collective farm was sent to Siberia. He escaped. It took him 10 years to get home to western Ukraine only to be sent back again.
