I made $38,500 as an Assistant S&C at Ohio State in 2008!! Adjusted for inflation that’s $57,000 today. This salary rage is incredibly WEAK for a school that prides itself on being the best at all things. Embarrassing.

If you’re coaching at a high level (moving, queuing, demonstrating, encouraging, working the room) then 1 hour of coaching = 2 hours of desk work. IMO 4 hours of coaching is equivalent to an 8 hour day and about the max one can do.

Calling high school athletes “men” and “women” & their sports teams “men’s” and “women’s” is a pet peeve of mine. There are no men and women in high school, only boys and girls. If as strength coaches, we could grasp this fact, it may lead to less idiotic programming errors.

100%. Poor coaches will look at a system and say “this is a cookie cutter program” not realizing the time that went into perfecting the system. No one complains about the Mercedes Benz rolling off the assembly line, but it’s a “cookie cutter” too.

Little secret: great coaches have systems in place to make things as efficient as possible. All these jokers out here speaking absolutes: “doing X makes you a lazy coach” might be the lazy ones as they have not taken the time to create/implement systems that free them to coach

I don’t think anyone with a bachelors degree, let alone a masters, plus a CSCS should ever make 30-35k. I don’t think that’s entry level. We have to set our standards higher than that. What other profession is good with a 30k starting point?

It is okay to pay an entry-level coach an entry-level wage. However, no one earning $30-35,000 should be expected to stay forever. A coach should not be made to feel or look like the bad guy if and when he decides to move on to a better opportunity. Want loyalty? Pay for it.

I’ve trained A LOT of elementary aged athletes. One thing I can tell you for certain, they love jumping hurdles. Wether they are successful or not.

This made my day! Thank you for posting. These 3 pages formed the cornerstone of my coaching philosophy. 1,000’s of athletes have benefited from this thinking. These ideas may seem common sense now, but definitely not so 20 years ago. Simply beautiful. @coachgambetta

Here is an oldie but goodie article on building leg strength for performance by @coachgambetta We need to train movements and not muscles. This applies to performance, rehab and those that just want to stay productive throughout their life.

First day for our 4 summer interns! We learned: 1. Coordination & durability are the cornerstones of athleticism. 2. Injuries happen when the body cannot reduce the forces it can produce. 3. Don’t have relationships with the student-athletes. Pretty simple stuff!

I got my USAW in year 2000. Instructor was @coachrichlansky Drove 8hrs. from Birmingham, AL to Orlando, FL to attend. Easily the most positively impactful 3 days of learning on my career. It’s a must to do in person, not on line.

Question / Discussion: Is the USAW worth the time and investment? I have my CFSC and I loved doing it! Just want to know if it is worth the investment.
