The US is supporting Saudi with these policies while criticizing Iran for mistreating women and political dissidents. Something Saudi does in equal if not greater measure. I suspect the reason for this difference is has to do with oil.

It went wrong when economists started making complex mathematical models to make it look more like physics or other natural sciences which are more prestigious. Ignoring the complex models are less accurate and more fragile.
