After a lot of work and countless 5am starts, it’s AMAZING to have received my advanced copies of The Osprey prior to publication on 29th Feb. Thanks so much to
@chiffchat
for doing such a brilliant job. What an honour to have contributed to this iconic series.
White-tailed Eagle G801 returned to the Isle of Wight this week after a lengthy stay at Poole Harbour. The Island’s resident pair, G274 and G324, were there to ‘greet’ her when she arrived. What a privilege to see them like this. Sorry for my dodgy camera work!
@SeaEagleEngland
Fantastic to see that the first Osprey is back at Rutland Water - and what’s more it’s Maya the most successful bird in the local population. She’s reared 37 chicks at the Manton Bay nest since first breeding in 2010. Today equals her earliest ever arrival too.
@rutlandospreys
Brilliant to see the whole of the Stamford Peregrine family together like this. You can watch the live stream on the
@SaintsOnline
website .
@RutStamSound
Really exciting that a White-tailed Eagle has fledged from a nest in England this summer. The project has involved a great deal of work by many people and it’s brilliant to have reached this milestone. The first chick of many I hope.
I was really fortunate to enjoy some close views of the Isle of Wight’s resident pair of White-tailed Eagles, G274 and G324, this week. Now in their 4cy the two birds are looking more like adults with yellow bills. The larger female is perched above in the video.
@SeaEagleEngland
Happy birthday
@royhdennis
!
Thanks for being such an inspiration to me and many other people and for all you have done - and continue to do - to restore nature.
Brilliant to see 022 back at Poole Harbour - and more than two weeks earlier than last year! Superb camera images too - well done to the team. Live stream is here:
Brilliant to see the Manton Bay Ospreys together again after a winter apart. The male, 33, returned this afternoon 24 hours after his mate. This will be their tenth summer breeding together, and it’s the earliest they have been reunited in the spring.
@rutlandospreys
Three’s a crowd! Great bit of action in Manton Bay
@rutlandospreys
this morning when Maya returned for her 14th summer at the nest. She’s reared an amazing tally of 34 chicks since 2010. Suffice to say it didn’t take her long to see off the imposter!
We are thrilled to report that Roy Dennis
@royhdennis
has been awarded an OBE in the New Years Honours List for his remarkable contribution to wildlife.

A very memorable day - the first time an Osprey chick has hatched in a nest on the South Coast of England for more than two centuries. A real privilege to be involved in this project, and even better that the first female to breed is one from Rutland Water.
I won’t win any prizes for the photo, but it was so good to see a White-tailed Eagle on home turf at
@RutlandWaterNR
this morning, as several Ospreys fished nearby. G542 spent 48 hrs in Rutland and has now headed east to the Brecks. Hope they might breed in Rutland one day.
💙Thank you NHS💙 Last week my wife Louise went into labour so quickly that we had to call an ambulance. The paramedics - Kirsty, Emily & Dave - arrived from Oakham just in time to deliver baby Laurie. We will forever be in their debt for their incredible response
@EMASNHSTrust
Amazing (and worrying) to see the Lammergeier land on the road earlier. Fortunately it flew off before any of us needed to stop the traffic, but I hope this doesn’t become a habit on the fenland roads. Video from my iPhone showing just how close it was.
@louis_phipps
We are delighted to be able to finally share this wonderful news! This has been building for some time & finally, a pivotal moment in the recovery of nature in NI, Ospreys, once driven extinct here, are confirmed to have bred naturally in Co Fermanagh
There is no one who is more deserving of this award than Roy. I consider myself very fortunate to have had him as a friend and mentor for many years. A true great of the conservation world and still going strong aged 83!
We are delighted to report that
@royhdennis

Happy 80th birthday to a true legend of conservation
@royhdennis
- an inspiration to me & many others around the world. Roy has done, and continues to do, so much for the natural world (just don’t tell anyone he had to stand on a box for this photo with me & Ian Perks!)
We’re so grateful for the incredible response we received from the amazing ambulance crew and 999 call taker when Laurie was unexpectedly born at home. They are all a credit to
@EMASNHSTrust
The parents of a baby born unexpectedly at home in Stamford wanted to thank the hero ambulance crew who helped them with the delivery - comprising two war-veterans and a student paramedic studying at
@UniNhantsFHES
Our congratulations to the Mackrills💚
Happy birthday to
@royhdennis
. A giant* of the conservation world who continues to do so much to restore nature. If you’ve enjoyed watching White-tailed Eagles or Ospreys recently then wish him happy birthday. *not in height, hence the box he stood on for this photo!
Thanks
@sophieraworth
and
@BBCNews
for giving me the chance to talk about the travels of White-tailed Eagle G818 on the News at Six on BBC1 this evening. Some brilliant footage and photos from
@twamers
and
@nyrak62
too - thank you both.
I love this photo by
@alison_copland
of a White-tailed Eagle with an urban backdrop at Poole Harbour today. It reminds me of a pair that nest near Helsinki city centre . Hopefully a sign of things to come in southern England.
@harbourbirds
Brilliant to see CJ7 back on the nest at Poole Harbour this morning, but it looks like the intruding female isn’t going to give up without a fight. The brilliant
@harbourbirds
live stream is well worth a watch.
Who needs satellite tracking?! 092 is a juv Osprey
@LloydPark3
and I ringed at a nest near Rutland Water on 11 July. It spent six weeks on the Gannel estuary in Cornwall and then was seen at two sites 90km apart near Barcelona yesterday. Thanks to
@Sussss4eses
for the great photo
Fantastic that Poole Harbour’s now-resident White-tailed Eagle G801 flew directly over our
@harbourbirds
boat this morning. Fair to say everyone was very excited, including
@jsparker_
and
@LivCooper23
!
Well hello! Touch down for CJ7!!! We just had a photo come through from different harbour nest platform and here she is. Safe and sound. Right….now where’s 022

Published today! So pleased to have contributed to this fantastic
@chiffchat
series. Want to know more about Ospreys, including migration, ecology, conservation, history and where and when to see them? Look no further than Spotlight Ospreys!
How many Ospreys? There were 30+ at Gunjur quarry in The Gambia this morning, including these 10 on a single 75 metre stretch of fence. This is probably the most important site for Ospreys in The Gambia at the moment.
It’s always exciting to receive photos of local Ospreys seen in The Gambia. 2H3, from a confidential site in Northants in 2022, was photographed at Kartong beach on 5/1, and then 2H2 (2022 nest in Rutland) was seen near Sanyang y’day.
📷 Debbie Hockey and Andy Young
Lots of Ospreys being seen across the UK at the mo as they head south on migration. If you’d like to learn more about the journey ahead of them then you might be interested in my online talk, summarising my PhD research. Chuffed it’s had over 3.5k views!
I built this nest with the team from
@NorfolkWT
on a very wet day in November. The Broads is a brilliant area for Ospreys, so I think this has every chance of success. It’s early days, but encouraging signs!
(1/2) A male osprey has been spotted at NWT Ranworth over the past week!
We're being treated to regular sightings of this impressive bird as he can be easily spotted sitting on a newly created platform within view of our visitor centre 🙌
Liz Parker 📸
Very well done to the Llyn Brenig team for acting so swiftly this morning. There is every chance, at this early stage in the season, that the Ospreys will relocate to the alternative nest and still have time to rear young this year. Let’s hope so.
@LlynBrenig
@North_Wales_WT
Very exciting news… 022 IS BACK!! He briefly dropped onto the livestream nest at 09:16am. Our team are out monitoring this morning and will keep you updated on any interactions with CJ7! How is this season going to unfold?!

Who needs satellite tracking? Four of this year’s juvenile Ospreys from Rutland have now been seen on migration. The latest is 1H1 who has reached the Sado estuary in SW Portugal, 12 days after leaving Manton Bay. Thanks to Carlos Miguel for the great photos.
Amazing news! A Scottish Osprey, from a nest in Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, has been photographed in Barbados, having crossed the Atlantic on its first migration. Read the full story by

What a historic moment, and perhaps the most significant update of the project to date. Although not pin-sharp we're sure this is 5H1, the first wild-fledged Osprey of the new south coast population to return. What a great moment!

It’s encouraging to see how well the White-tailed Eagles are fitting into southern England - here G818 catching a grey mullet in Christchurch Harbour, as the local rowers watch on!
Hopefully this is the first of many young White-tailed Eagles to fledge from nests in southern England in the coming years. With two other pairs now well established things are certainly looking promising.
2023 proved to be a landmark year with the first White-tailed Eagle chick fledging from a nest in southern England for 240 years. We're pleased to report the youngster, G625, is doing well. Read more in our latest blog:

A stunning photo of White-tailed Eagles G463 and G466 who have paired up at Poole Harbour. The brilliant
@harbourbirds
boat trips give you the chance of amazing views like this. More info here:
Anyone seen this before? A group of 18 buzzards feeding on earthworms in a single grass field in Shropshire earlier today. I’ve never seen a group like it...
It’s always so exciting to see the first Osprey back in Rutland each spring, but particularly today. For me the natural world has brought such solace over the last year, and this Osprey today was a real sign of hope.
Great to speak about the Scottish Osprey which has crossed the Atlantic to Barbados, on
@BBCBreakfast
this morning. You can catch-up on BBC iPlayer - the piece starts at 3:08:20. . Thanks to
@rutlandospreys
for hosting me!
Publication day! The first Osprey arrival in Rutland this year is my book. It seems very fitting to be celebrating publication by giving a talk this evening at
@RutlandWaterNR
where I saw my first Osprey back in 1995.
After a lot of work and countless 5am starts, it’s AMAZING to have received my advanced copies of The Osprey prior to publication on 29th Feb. Thanks so much to
@chiffchat
for doing such a brilliant job. What an honour to have contributed to this iconic series.
For those of you who follow the Poole Harbour Ospreys, this is CJ7’s mother visiting the Manton Bay nest. She has been breeding in the local area since 2014, raising 19 chicks during that time, with the same male, 06(09).
@rutlandospreys
@harbourbirds
The satellite tracking data has given us an incredible insight into this young eagle’s explorations over the last 17 months. He has covered much of England, and it’s fantastic he is now back on the Isle of Wight
Exciting news - 2019 male White-tailed Eagle, G393, returned home to the Isle of Wight this afternoon after exactly 17 months away. Here is a map of his travels, during which the satellite tag has logged 71,036 GPS points and he has flown a total of 4904 km
@SeaEagleEngland
I’ve said it before but
@GwashOspreys
(a working trout farm) deserve so much credit for working with wildlife rather than against it, in setting up their brilliant Osprey hide. The results speak for themselves. Nowhere better in England to photograph Ospreys.
It almost happened yesterday - but did today! Exciting to see one of the young White-tailed Eagles cross the English Channel for the first time. The NW wind provided the perfect tailwind conditions.
After an aborted crossing of the English Channel yesterday, G463 made light work of the flight to France today, flying 47 km between Dungeness and Boulogne-sur-Mer, between 13:05 and 13:45 aided by a strong NW tailwind.
@SeaEagleEngland
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d see a sight like this in Dorset! WTE in the evening light just above Church Knowle on my daily exercise run.

Absolutely appalled to hear that the Llyn Brenig Osprey nest in North Wales was felled by someone with a chainsaw last night. This after a new pair had settled on the nest, and the female had laid the first egg.
Brenig Osprey Project.
Last night, at 21.42, someone took a chainsaw to the osprey nest and felled it.

Now seems a good time to retweet this excellent piece written by John Love last spring - sea eagles don't deserve their lingering bad reputation in Scotland…
This is the first confirmed sighting of 3AY, a male Osprey that
@LloydPark3
and I ringed at a nest on private land near Rutland Water (Site O) on 22/7/19. It was a single chick in the nest and so great to know it has survived to three years.
@rutlandospreys
@CambsBirdClub
I managed to get a readable photograph of the Helpston (Cambs) Osprey's ring, this morning. Appears to be 3AY white on blue on the left leg. The bird has been around for more than a week, it seems.
@CambsBirdClub
Sadly we can now confirm that the White-tailed Eagle that died of brodifacoum poisoning in Dorset was G461, a bird that had been seen and enjoyed by many people.

Amidst all the uncertainty at the moment, here’s some good news - the first Osprey is back in Rutland...and on the same day as last year. It’s officially spring!
We are all very excited here today, as it has been confirmed that we have our first Osprey back! The bird is one of our regular breeding females, who has been coming back to Rutland for years!
Exciting that the first Ospreys are back at Rutland Water. It’s been a exceptional winter for sightings of colour-ringed Rutland birds in West Africa, with five seen in Senegal and another in The Gambia. Other sightings in Iberia too. Full details here:
The Barbados Osprey is becoming more famous by the minute! All being well I’ll be talking about it on

Love these photos from
@RSPBPulborough
during the cold spell before Christmas. These two eagles are now well-established as a pair and were feeding on carp. The ice makes it looks more like a scene from Hokkaido than West Sussex!
It really is amazing that these two Ospreys will have spent the winter apart - and not seen each other since late last summer - and yet arrive within an hour of each other at their nest today. They know from experience that an early arrival helps keep the Egyptian Geese away!
🦅BREAKING NEWS: our star pair from the Manton Bay nest, 33(11) and Maya are back!!!🦅
33(11) was the first to arrive at 12:29 and it wasn't too long before Maya appeared at 12:56. The pair got straight down to business and copulated at 13:00.
There will be footage to follow.
This is such brilliant news! We know Osprey translocation works but I am just as excited today as I was when the first bird returned to Rutland Water 20 years ago. Another step closer to restoring breeding Ospreys to the South Coast after an absence of 200 years. Fantastic!
Ladies and gents, we have a 2017 chick back, ITS LS1. Wow, what a day trying to track him down. Have just refound him on the northern shoreline. Am so pleased for everyone that’s been involved or supported/followed the project. Thank you!!

A great weekend in Poole with the
@ospreylf
team capped off by a superb boat trip with
@harbourbirds
on Sunday morning. Witnessing the enjoyment people get from seeing the eagles was as good as the brilliant views of the birds themselves. Long may it continue!
Osprey 4K left his nest site on the Belvoir estate on 9th Sept and has returned to his regular stop-over site at Baie des Veys in northern France. He crossed the English Channel further east than last year (yellow/white) but immediately headed west once he reached France.
Bird migration never ceases to amaze me - both Ospreys back on the same day, after spending the winter apart. Had a very enjoyable hour or so at Manton Bay y’day afternoon with
@LloydPark3
- Sand Martins also back, and flocks of Fieldfares and Golden Plovers preparing to go north
Really exciting to hear of the superb Osprey and White-tailed Eagle sightings from today’s
@harbourbirds
boat trip at Poole Harbour. Hopefully a really positive sign of things to come. Two species back in an area where they once thrived and very much belong.
Exciting news - over the winter we installed a camera in the tower at
@SaintsOnline
in Stamford and today the female Peregrine laid the first egg. What’s more, she did so minutes after we installed a screen and display board, meaning you can go into the church and watch live.
Great news! This is the fourth year that CJ7, who fledged from a nest near Rutland Water in 2015, has returned to Poole. Let’s hope this is the year she breeds for the first time.

It is amazing how unobtrusive the Isle of Wight sea eagles have been since release; they have blended into the landscape. But then that’s exactly how they are in Europe - living close to cities like Rotterdam and Hamburg but often going unnoticed.
If you want to see White-tailed Eagles in southern England then Poole Harbour is the place to go at the moment. These two eagles are now well established as a pair. The brilliant
@harbourbirds
boat trips are a great way of seeing them:

It’s been a real privilege to watch the young White-tailed Eagles make their first flights and get used to life on the wing over the past few weeks. Exciting and nerve-wracking in equal measure!
We are pleased to have released a further seven juvenile White-tailed Eagles on the Isle of Wight in partnership with
@ForestryEngland
. This is the second year of a five-year project to reintroduce the species to southern England.
@SeaEagleEngland
Really encouraging that these two young eagles have returned to the Isle of Wight after wandering so extensively. Amazing how much of Britain they see on their travels!
Encouraging news - White-tailed Eagle G471 (yellow track) returned to IoW today after 17 months away, in which he travelled 10,978km. Last month another 2020 bird, G466 (white), also made it back after spending most of 2021 in N Scotland, and flying 6463km.

A Peregrine’s eye view of Rutland Water from All Saints church in Oakham. We installed a nesting tray earlier this month for the church’s new residents. Very many thanks to all at All Saints for their support. More details here
Exciting that Peregrines are breeding in Stamford for the first time. We ringed the two chicks - a male and female - under licence earlier this week and, all being well, they will fledge in early July. Many thanks to
@HarriermanPhil
for coming over so we could colour-ring them.
Pleased to say that All Saints' peregrines have had chicks. They were checked on Monday and all are doing well! They are keeping the pigeon population down in Red Lion Square!
It’s been an encouraging year for the White-tailed Eagle project, with the first successful nest and other pairs established. Steve Egerton-Read gives an update in this excellent video.
Well done
@harbourbirds
for helping so many people to see the birds
We're thrilled to have released six juvenile White-tailed Eagles on the Isle of Wight, in partnership with
@ForestryEngland
. This is the first part of a five year project to reintroduce the species to southern England after an absence of 240 years.
White-tailed Eagle G471, a 2020 male from IoW, is back in Norfolk, nine months after its last visit. Here are its movements since - it spent most of 2021 in southern Scotland and Northumberland, living a nomadic lifestyle typical of young eagles
@SeaEagleEngland
Migration is amazing - this juvenile honey buzzard flew 640km across the North Sea with a westerly tailwind overnight on 12/13 September, including nine hours flying in total darkness. The GSM transmitter should provide some superb data as she heads south.
This summer
@royhdennis
satellite-tagged a juvenile honey buzzard in Moray. She made an amazing overnight crossing of the North Sea to Denmark and is now migrating south along the Danish coast, reaching
@WaddenseaUNESCO
this afternoon.

This is 1H9 a juvenile Osprey ringed at a nest on private land near Rutland Water on 27th June (Site C) - one of three chicks to fledge from that site this year. Great to know that it is in such a good area and, most importantly, catching fish!

The Bay of Biscay is a real hazard for young Ospreys as they head south from the UK for the first time. It looks like this bird from the Tweed Valley landed on two different boats - one heading south and the other north - before continuing its flight across the sea
Good news for the All Saints’ Peregrines in Stamford this morning - they now have three eggs. Here’s the male taking his turn at incubating.
@SaintsOnline
Nest cameras, combined with colour ringing, have added so much to our knowledge of how widely young Ospreys wander before settling to breed for the first time. I wonder where 5H1 will be seen next?
Our first returning wild fledged Osprey has been seen again today.... in South Wales of course! Female 5H1 was photographed at 12:48pm on a nest in the Usk Valley.
Thanks for the quick sharing of info from Usk Valley Ospreys.
