Maya has just touched down on the Manton Bay nest! Welcome back! This is the second time she's returned on the 12th which makes this her joint earliest date back.
Egg-citing News! (and we're not yolking...)
Bit of a scramble - just before 2pm today, Maya laid her first egg!
We suggest you crack on and watch the webcams or, even better, lay everything else aside and hatch a plan to come and see her in person at Lyndon!
We are all very excited here today, as it has been confirmed that we have our first Osprey back! The bird is one of our regular breeding females, who has been coming back to Rutland for years!
🦅 And the season has officially begun! 🦅
One of our breeding females from an offsite nest, 25(10), has returned today! She was the first bird to return last year too and paid a visit to the Manton Bay nest (see below pic). Hopefully, Maya and 33(11) won't be too far behind!
🦅 BREAKING: Maya has laid her first egg! 🦅
We believe she laid over night and you can just spot it in this short video when 33 and Maya swap incubation duties 🥚
🦅BREAKING NEWS: our star pair from the Manton Bay nest, 33(11) and Maya are back!!!🦅

There will be footage to follow.
We are pleased to announce that 19 chicks have successfully fledged from 8 nests this year, which is brilliant! 🦅

Lovely end to the week here at Rutland Water
On what was an absolutely soaking start to the day, Maya brought us some much needed sunshine by laying her 3rd egg of the year
Spaced out almost exactly 3 days apart,
1st Egg - 30th March
2nd Egg – 2nd April
3rd Egg – 5th April
We have had some incredibly exciting news regarding one of last years chicks! 056, who fledged from Manton Bay, has been seen out in Gambia was the project's 150th chick to fledge so it is brilliant to hear that he is doing so well! Photo credit: Chris Wood.
🦅 BREAKING NEWS: We have a second egg! 🦅
We believe that Maya may in fact have laid it at some point from Wednesday afternoon onwards - we just haven't been able to catch a glimpse of it until yesterday evening!
🦅 BREAKING NEWS: 🦅
Well, what a 24 hours we have had! We are happy to report the chick that was left exposed yesterday is a little trooper and is feeding well. The most exciting news is the third chick has hatched this morning at 9:30!
❗ BREAKING NEWS: male 055 has returned for the first time since he left Rutland after fledging from the Manton Bay nest in 2019!
These fantastic shots of him were captured by one of our wonderful volunteers Chris Wood. 1/2
And the season begins as we have our first Osprey back which was first seen on Saturday (12th)!
We haven't yet managed to confirm an ID on which bird it is, but we hope to soon and it is all very exciting 🦅 Meanwhile, the wait is still on for the return of Maya and 33(11)
We can now confirm the other bird that has been on the Manton Bay nest this morning is 33 (11). This is the male Maya has breed with for the last few years. He is 7 days earlier than last year.

No sign of Maya since late afternoon on 3rd September, she must have started her migration. Safe travels to this incredible bird! We are still getting sightings of other osprey at Rutland Water, so you are still in with a chance of seeing one of these fantastic birds.
The first chick has 'semi-hatched'!! It still remains in the bottom half of the eggshell, so hopefully later this afternoon/evening it will emerge from the shell. Maya is doing a great job in making sure it stays dry and warm.
Satellite tracked male 4K(13) is on his way back! He left his wintering grounds a couple of days ago on 21st March and is now heading over the Western Sahara. He has reached speeds of up to 45kph🦅
Let's hope he has a safe migration.
❗ BREAKING NEWS ❗
We are all incredibly excited because the oldest chick, male 096, has just fledged and flown for the very first time at 12:12pm today!!🦅
This morning, we ringed our Manton Bay chick with the BTO ring 1269435 and Darvic ring 1R0.
Stay tuned for a video later today with more details on the measurements we took, but for now, we can confirm that the chick is a healthy male, weighing in at a robust 1.58 kilograms.
It hasn't just been male 083 that has been spotted since he left Rutland, but his older brother 081 has recently been seen at Veta la Palma, south of Seville in Spain! Fantastic news 🦅

Breeding male 33(11) has finally returned to his nest at 17:29 this afternoon and was soon joined on the nest by Maya! We really can't beat news like this to end a day 🦅

🦅 BREAKING NEWS: 🦅
After spotting a crack in one of the eggs yesterday afternoon, the first chick hatched last night (Monday 9th May) at approximately 22:45!!! 🐣
Ringing at Manton Bay! You may have noticed that our three osprey chicks have been successfully ringed this morning. A blog will follow with further details, but we just wanted to share our 3 chicks are 3H3 - Female, 3H4 - Male and 3H5 - Female.
All the chicks are now 1 week old! Did you know all the chicks hatched within 48 hours - in fact it was approximately 46 hours and 15 minutes between the first and last chick hatching?! 🐥
Osprey 25(10) seen on Manton Bay nest this morning at 11:50am. She has made a habit of stopping by on the Manton Bay nest before heading off to her own site. She is a Rutland born bird and has been breeding since 2013.
Big scare for us today as our one Manton Bay chick was displaced by a massive fish. We have now intervened and repositioned the chick in the centre of the nest:
2020 celebrates Maya's 10th year as the Manton Bay breeding female but also her's and 33's 5th year together as a pair! Together they have managed to raise 14 chicks!
Fun fact: Last year, our wonderful volunteers recorded nearly 300 fish being brought back to the Manton Bay nest
And it looks like the two juveniles from the Manton Bay nest have left for their first ever migration and we wish them the very best of luck and hope to see them return in a couple of years time! 🦅 1/3

056 appears to be on his way. He was last seen in Manton Bay yesterday. All four youngsters look like they are on migration. They have long journeys ahead of them. An incredible season for The Rutland Osprey Project!

We have just received the exciting news, Rutland male, 1K(13), has been recorded in Senegal and this is the first time he has been seen at his wintering grounds!
1K fledged from an offsite nest in 2013 and is currently unpaired, although he has successfully bred in the past. 🦅
This morning at 7.00 am the Osprey Team went out to the Manton Bay nest to ring the chicks. We have one female - 3AW and one male - 3AU. You can hear more about it in our blog later today.
This lovely Swallow joined Maya briefly on the nest this morning! 🦅
We have zoomed in on the nest to ensure we don't miss the moment the first chick hatches.
We are only 35 followers off 10,000! So why not help us reach the magic number by following, liking and retweeting. You'll be kept up to date on latest osprey news, including the imminent egg hatching. 🐣

|| Female 3AF is back! || She fledged in 2017 from a Rutland nest site and is now in Wales. This is also the first year that she has been seen in the UK since she fledged. What fantastic news!!
Another new arrival, this one a female ‘3AF’. She’s not one of our previous years chicks but we have reported it and should find out where she is from. Now lass, we know two very handsome young welsh chaps that are looking to settle down...
Our only satellite tracked Osprey, male 4K(13), has spent the last couple of days travelling across the Sahara Desert, Mauritania. His top speed whilst crossing this section of his migration, was an amazing 40kph, which is also his fastest pace so far on his current migration! 🦅
All four youngsters have flown the nest. Only the parents remain. They too will migrate soon. This morning the pair are looking magnificent on the nest in Manton Bay.
Maya and 33(11) have now been paired up for eight years and will be the 7th year they have bred together! Maya was first seen in Rutland in 2009 and she first bred in 2010.
Between 2010 and 2021, Maya has raised an incredible 31 chicks, 20 of which she has raised with 33(11)!🦅
Thank you to Tony Clarke for these beautiful photos of Maya taken yesterday evening from Shallow Water hide. She's looking quite bloody as she eats her fish!
This is the moment we have all been waiting for. Maya laid her first egg this morning at 11.45, just 11 days after she and 33(11) returned - very egg-citing if you ask me! 🦅🥚
🦅 4K is making amazing progress and has long left Morocco behind him. He already has travelled across most of Spain! Not too much longer to wait before he gets back to Rutland... 🦅
