Today marks 80 years since the death of our founder, Dr Sydney Long. In 1926, 435 acres of marsh at Cley was bought 'as a bird-breeding sanctuary for all time'. Then known as the Norfolk Naturalists' Trust, we later became Norfolk Wildlife Trust – the first of The @WildlifeTrusts

At NWT Hickling Broad, staff often discover great tits nesting in odd places – the letter box, roof of a tractor & even the scrap metal bin! 🚜 This year it was a traffic cone, which was then coned off to protect the nest 🚧 Five chicks successfully fledged 🐥🐥 @BBCSpringwatch

So, not only have @NorfolkCC ignored years of advice & submitted a planning application for the NWL...🤨 But some MPs have written to DEFRA Secretary of State to out-maneuver Natural England's bat guidance which could block the road, labelling their work as 'arbitrary' 🙃🥺

This unusual all-white grey heron has been hanging out at NWT Cley and Salthouse Marshes over the last few days! 🤩 It's leucistic, which means its feathers lack melanin pigment, resulting in white feathers. More info on leucism from our friends @_BTO 👉

Our osprey found a mate! 👏💘 However, they're unlikely to produce chicks this year (not for lack of trying 😉). It may be that they're juvenile birds, not yet ready for parenthood, but this all sets a promising scene for next year - watch this space! 👉

We've just acquired an Arable Plant Reserve! Arable land is land used to grow crops. Amongst the crop, these fields can support a diverse range of wildflowers or 'arable weeds' that have adapted to grow in these very specific conditions 🌷🌼🥀 A sand catchfly at the reserve📸

A Dartford warbler has been spotted at NWT Hickling Broad – a rare sighting for a wetland such as this! 🐦 They are typically found on dry heath sites. No sightings have been recorded at Hickling Broad in at least the last 22 years. (Photo taken on Norfolk heathland last year)
