It's crazy to think a game as cartoony & fun as Crash 3 was made under such adversarial conditions!
Jason and Andy would later make Jak & Daxter and retire years later.
Universal Interactive no longer exists.

Despite the odds, Crash 3 came out on time and to universal acclaim! Yet another hit for ND and Universal Interactive, despite the latter's poor treatment of the former.

Let's back up. In '94, artist Jason Rubin & coder Andy Gavin were a 2-man company called Naughty Dog. They got a big break when Universal Interactive signed them on a 3-game-deal.
The duo were told, "make 3 games for us, and we'll let you use our offices and equipment"

So they moved from Boston to Hollywood, & set up in the famous Universal Back Lot (you know, where people like Spielberg also made movies).
The team grew, and with the help of Universal Interactive's Mark Cerny, they made their first hit: Crash Bandicoot! It sold millions!

Desperately working to meet the Christmas deadline, ND worked nights and weekends in their miserable "office" to make it work. Universal refused to pay for A/C, so ND worked shirtless and brought in buckets of ice. Hard drives went down due to overheating!

Universal Interactive was contractual obligated to provide ND with "office space," but it didn't say it had to be good office space. So they moved ND's crew out of their personal office and forced them to setup their computers in the hallway.

So for the third game, Crash Warped, Naughty Dog told Universal that they would be leaving the lot after they finished the Crash trilogy, to go indie.
And the people at Universal Interactive were not happy... and lost their minds!

It was time for a sequel! So Naughty Dog made Crash 2. But by this point, their trusted compadre Mark Cerny had left Universal. So they brought on Mark directly. Sony stepped in and helped publish. Universal was exactly doing much anymore at this point... but it was another hit!
