On early Sierra games (e.g. KQ2), the advertising claimed they were 3D. Why? Because despite only having 2D sprites, you could move in front of & behind objects. The world was 3D and *technically* 3D rendered. So is Former Dawn! Battletoads isn't. Rare on the NES. #nesdev #8bit

Northward swimming animation for Jeku. This and the last one are for the standard JRPG 45° top-down isometric view. Former Dawn will have other views, like side-scrolling for traveling between areas. Might do something similar for certain swimming scenes. #indiegamdev #8bit

Meet Jered, the antagonist in Former Dawn. This is an in-game character portrait usable on the NES. It'll probably be improved a bit before the final release of the game because we've already enhanced the underlying graphics system since this was created. #nesdev #8bit

Enemy concept for Former Dawn; representative specimen of trilateria. The Astraean tree of life is very different than Earth's. On Earth, even starfish are only bilaterally symmetric. Also, this only uses 1 sprite layer on the NES (and a special color trick). #pixelart #nesdev

@BlackMage1985 Accidentally recorded this at 24FPS instead of 60FPS, but this is the game running from a frontloader NES to a 20" Sony Trinitron PVM. Everything looks a lot smoother (and nicer) in person. We may post another one in a bit with the correct framerate.

@matthughson Thank you! It took quite a bit of effort to get that particular feature working correctly because it's an awkward middle zone of objects and subroutines. Have to blend pieces of the codebase pertaining to the two different engines without any glitches. (Or crashes!)

Evolution of our first Org airship from concept to pixels. Colors will be dependent on plot context and other unfinalized decisions. These airships are humanoid powered, like Roman oarships as seen in Ben-Hur (1959). The buoyancy is provided by alien gas bags. #8bit #pixelart

@RoverThx Technically, the full color palette of the NES is 425 colors, not 54...but hardly anyone uses the other 371 colors because they are exceedingly difficult to integrate into a game. We're already using 53 of those 371, and plan to use more.

People often say that this room from Former Dawn is reminiscent of Chrono Trigger. ...and that's not a bad thing! #screenshotsaturday #pixelart

We've been quiet on Twitter lately because most of our efforts have been going into an HPC project called red-17. It's a 17-node Beowulf cluster (136 physical cores) with infiniband networking + other goodies. It will be used to accelerate Former Dawn development. #HPC #nesdev

My wife gave birth to our 3rd child (a little girl) on Nov. 20th, 2022. Naturally this means that work at SNS will be slow for a while. But it has not stopped! We'll be back in full swing soon enough. My daughter agrees:

We've created near-100%-working 8x1 attributes mini-mappers for the EverDrive N8 Pro and the PowerPak. These mappers can only show the Mita scene at full screen w/ user-selectable dim mode. Coming soon: the EverDrive N8 (non-pro) version. Stay tuned for public release! #nesdev

Here's the .gif "corrected" so that Twitter doesn't butcher the looping. If you look closely at the original one we posted, you'll see that it has a slight (false) pause at the very end before it starts over. (None of this matters for the NES, of course...) #indiegamedev #8bit

@arnpoly Thank you! Assuming you own a real NES or Famicom, you'll be able to see for yourself that it's real once we launch our KS campaign. The playable demo will release upon launch and it will include the first boss battle of the game. Hopefully about 30-60 minutes of gameplay.
