The only thing that has stopped Sonic from being mario quality is lack of vision and consistency (plus budget, dev time etc). I think with frontiers' success and with Kishimoto listening, SEGA hiring more peeps for ST and giving them a higher budget, we can see that quality....

I mean this model also has better textures that makes it look nicer (and maybe proportions tweaked a bit?). The in game model looks like doodoo but the CGI model looks good (which this looks closer to)

Sonic isn't a AAA game series anymore, they have less developers than even fucking Gamefreak (at least during development of the game). Not to mention there was probably a point in time where they had to redo some parts in order to get the game to run on switch
