The reason most devs don't make their own engine is we don't have the time or financial freedom to do so. Most of us just wanna make games.
They actually godoubled down? That's not godood. Write your own engine. It'll make the game feel more unique, and you will have all the control. It's not that difficult. If you can make a game, you can make an engine.
