@davidlparsons I wasn't aware hugging persons in what looks like some kind of hardware store was a social norm pre virus.

@Happydog___ Sweetie. November 6 she will have been with me for a year. She is either 10 or 11 now. Semi feral. She was found on street with severel matted hair. Before I got her the vets at @PAWSChicago treated her for cancer surgery/dental issues. She now runs my home.

@suchnerve Adjunct faculty do most of the actual teaching in colleges. They usually have to cobble together multiple jobs and not just teaching ones, yet many still many live in poverty unless supported otherwise. In many cases, the "better" aka tenure track jobs don't exist.

@KellaHannaWayne @DangitBird @poeticambiguity So many people are chained to abusive work situations for this reason. Most persons have to live under autocrats even in countries that are ostensibly democratic. I can vote for in an election, but if I have to suffer abuse from an employer because if I don't I will starve.

@JoshuaPotash Why aren't Americans marching on the White House? Not sure if this is a rhetorical question. One answer: many Americans don't have time to protest because of predatory late capitalism. They are working. Which is exactly the goal of our corrupt regime.

Announcement: I am going to live the life I was meant to live. Going to New York City to see Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera on January 27. I have NEVER been to the Met. May be my only chance to go, and the sublime performance by @Alek_Kurzak motivated me to do this.

@hunterw Born in 1962. Tormented from ages 14 to 17 especially. I didn't even come out until I was 26. It was assumed by most everyone I was. And thus deserving only of torment unless I changed my supposedly effeminate ways. Through the 90s I suffered housing and job discrimination.

Sweetie went to the Rainbow Bridge. She was examined and the cancerous masses had returned. We agreed on compassionate end of life care today. @PAWSChicago had given her two years since Nov 21 when I got her. She almost made it.

@keithgjeffrey Teachers have been abused because it is assumed it is a calling or vocation and thus do not need to be paid enough or work under the assumptions that suffering and sacrifice are required because it is a vocation.

@kpanyc I am single LGBTQ guy with two disabilities. Born 1962. Orwell said, paraphrasing by memory, hard to write wondering when your next meal is. Unable to participate in the get married/get supported in grad school in your 20s track (which usually meant women making the sacrifices).

@maximillian_alv @DJAdequate And that's how most Americans have to live in their working lives. Makes democracy a sham if you have to be subjected to the whims of petty tyrants at work and dependent on them for wages and, and this is really the kicker, health insurance.

@biden_brigade The issue is not him being gay. It's him being gay and voting against LGBTQ rights. And supporting an administration that wants to erase LGBTQ persons in the interest of supporting evangelical theocrats.

@Distopos @drkateperry I gave them an assignment where they share organizational tips with each other on Padlet. The least organized students didn't look at the Padlet posts. Well, I tried.

@KarenAKeely @CathyMarksKrpan @MandyMathEd I consider participation much more than talking in class. I include online discussions, helping each other in groups, coming to drop in hours for feedback: people show their engagement diversely.

@DearSplenda @erin_bartram Just taught a course on this topic. Got some papers on the more famous ones like Satanic daycare centers. One on the Dungeons & Dragons moral panics, how the game was a Satanic influence, causing suicides, etc. Important to distinguish between moral panic and conspiracy theory.

@Sarah_Smarsh @jakerr35 The working class is busy working outside their hones in a pandemic to fend off starvation. My first thought about the insurrectionists: don't they work? To be able to take time off in the middle of the week?.

@AndreaChalupa @KatRussell12 The Nazis did this. They packed the courts in 1930s Germany. And persons wonder why I wept on Election Day 2016. I knew this was coming. Read Shirer. Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

Former student made a substantive donation to @UICUF strike fund. Follow each other on LinkedIn; told me if I had not noticed her in class, she would be "dead in a ditch" such were her struggles. Took me for 3 classes; publicized that I am her mentor. She now writes grants.

@Literature_Lady You are not alone. Many of us are experiencing similar struggles. I am teaching one section with a couple of students who are academically and socially so troubled, and it is keeping me up at night because I pretty much want to give up, but cannot.

@SGUYBRAY I had a friend who partner died of AIDS. Friend was HIV positive. He totally fell for that Course in Miracles Gnostic mumbo jumbo, and he was trying to proselytize. (He is now deceased, but it wasn't from the HIV. Turns out the meds were working; he died of something unrelated.).

@EGonzaba As late as the late 80s/early 90s I remember being told there was a place in what used to be the gayborhood in Chicago that would develop "dirty" pictures. I did utilize its services once. Once. Repetition intentional.

@shockproofbeats My brother and I decided to make candles by melting box of crayons on stove. In ignorance, we decided to use Styrofoam cups as molds. The hot wax burst cups and spread over counter. We cleaned it up but my Dad came home and noticed a piece of wax on toaster. Lying was futile.

@TheLibertyAmb Objective ethical standards need not be based on one specific normative ethic that is based on the assumption that humans can't make ethical decisions for themselves.

@CNAtoRN I stayed with my late cat The Honey through the whole procedure. I felt like I had to. I did't want her to die without me there. The vet told me her heart stopped (it took only a half minute). I kissed her and told her I would be seeing her later at the Rainbow Bridge.

@dowellml I teach mostly first year students, and many of my students are first gen. The pandemic in the last part of their junior year and their senior year in high school created many levels of psychosocial/academic disruption. We are still in triage.
