I was thinking this morning that we’ve moved past the point where authoritarianism can be avoided. The only way to fix these issues is by the exercise of unilateral power. Someone will have that kind of control soon enough, and we have to hope it’s the right person.

They don’t seem to produce that much value. At least not 6 figures+ per month worth.

Certain musical gestures were tied to specific, generally agreed upon ‘affects’ that an audience would ‘get’ immediately.
We don’t get it now, which is why the music is harder for us to understand.

If it wasn’t for Catholic or Orthodox theology on salvation, I’d convert in a heartbeat. The liturgy in Protestant churches is so poor on average. Makes being a composer of sacred music discouraging.

A lot of my professors send out pdfs rather than make students buy books.
The upside is that it’s better on the wallet. Downside is having to annotate digitally, or print off 1000+ pages per term.

It’s challenging as a classical composer. Our modern domain is academia, but if you write accessible music the academics reject you.
Even worse if it’s sacred music because the churches that used to care about beauty in music don’t care to pay for it anymore.
