The dentist is a scam, and I'm telling you this as a dentist.
However there is a way to correct the ways in which we think about teeth that can save you money and stress.
@dvassallo
A lot that sounds fishy about that initial visit, and you wouldn’t be the first to have this issue but I’m not necessarily convinced by the dentist in malta. The radiographs may have shown something not visible in a visual exam. Either way, happy to help if you have questions.
Tipping culture at every establishment has gone too far and no one is talking about it.
A tip used to mean something and now it’s just a tax without service.
Patients often ask me what the “best” oral hygiene routine is.
People tend to land on two extremes: either not enough, or way too much.
If you do the following:
- Brush twice daily with an extra soft toothbrush
- Use a toothpaste with low RDA
- Floss 3x per week
- Chew
I met a girl recently in a social setting and was introduced by a friend as a dentist. I try to avoid that for the very reason of what happened next:
She proceeded to tell me she’s getting veneers next week and wanted me to give her any information she might not be aware of.
I
What if I told you that all you have to do is:
-Take coconut oil
- Vigorously swish for 20 min
- do that morning and night for 40 days
And you *might* get a 20% reduction in salivary bacterial count, with minimal difference in plaque and inflammation.
That’s oil pulling.
You want whiter teeth, be honest.
The problem: there's way too many products out there that claim to "whiten"
Let's cut through the BS to get you a few shades brighter 👇
Your dentist probably didn't tell you this but..
There's a supplement that helps gingivitis.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or Ubiquinone is known for it's cardiac benefits but it can aid in keeping your gums healthy.
Breastfeeding is a great way to set your child up for proper facial development. It’s still somewhat contentious but there’s increasing evidence that this is what’s needed to avoid an expensive bill at the orthodontist later in life.
Conversely, a bottle and pacifier will cause
Had a patient today who’s very regular about cleanings. Healthy, in shape.
Suddenly has 7 cavities.
We spent time trying to figure it out. Initially he couldn’t understand bc “I quit candy long ago”
Switched to Tom’s & added lemon water in the AM.
The scale tips that easily.
The tide is shifting, mainstream dentists are becoming attuned to the benefits of hydroxyapatite toothpaste as a fluoride alternative.
Slowly then all at once.
If you want healthier teeth in 2024 these are the cheapest and easiest habits to adopt for the new year:
-Tongue scraping
-Mouth taping at night
-Stop using alcohol-based and acidic mouthwash
-Leverage nano hydroxyapatite for enamel remineralization
-Use a gentle toothpaste
So many people just submit and live with sensitive teeth, and don’t know how to improve it or why it happens in the first place.
Nano-hydroxyapatite has gained popularity for remineralizing teeth, but it also works at tackling sensitivity in a matter of days.
These are SEM
Hydroxyapatite is something I've championed as a safe way to remineralize your teeth compared to fluoride, as well as keep your enamel white and free of sensitivity.
It's been a while since I covered it and looking back on my original thread, I decided it was time for a
Things that make you impervious to cavities:
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin K2
- Hydroxyapatite
- Xylitol
- Diet rich in Whole Foods
- Nasal breathing
Things that render the list above useless:
- Dry mouth
- Bombarding your mouth with acid all day long
Root canals are an infamous procedure known for their excruciating pain, questionable safety and overall a pain in the ass even after it’s finished.
Most content you’ll find on twitter will mention Weston Price and everyone will chant in unison “ROOT CANALS ARE DESTROYING US!”
The coffee stains are going away because you’re using salt, which extremely abrasive to the teeth. Guess what else goes away with the stains? Your enamel.
Brushing with salt is a sure fire way to get sensitive teeth, not the cure for it.
Just because it’s “natural” doesn’t
tea/coffee stains are going away after only 4 days of brushing with my new non toxic blend. Years of brushing with safe, non flouride, organic, natural, yet ineffective toothpaste never lifted stains like this is doing!!
If you have sensitive teeth, yet want to whiten, this is a
"You need to get your wisdom teeth removed"
Almost everyone has heard this from their dentist at some point, but is it true?
Are they enamel bombs waiting to blow up?
Or are they the hidden link to the tooth/body connection by meridians?
Young and healthy girl with perfect oral health comes in for her cleaning as she does every 6 months.
The hygienist tells me it was a bloody mess and the girl tells me she’s been noticing her gums bleeding out of nowhere, even randomly during the day.
Coordinate a blood panel
Your dentist was right about one thing: You don't floss enough.
Brush 2x per day, floss at least 3x a week, use a tongue scraper.
This is not a scam. This is the real deal. Do not skip this.
Just make sure you're using an extra soft toothbrush, and avoid abrasive toothpaste
I had the honor and privilege to speak with
@hubermanlab
at length and you can now watch his latest podcast on oral health. It’s no small feat to take on the huge topic of oral health even when you’re an expert in the field.
Andrew approached the topic with the utmost curiosity
New Huberman Lab podcast out now:
HOW TO IMPROVE ORAL HEALTH & ITS CRITICAL ROLE IN BRAIN & BODY HEALTH
•Critical Brushing & Flossing Times
•Fluoride
•Remineralize/Strengthen Your Teeth
•Oral Microbiome & Whole-Body Health
•Fillings, Gum Health
Traditional advice from the dentist:
-brush twice per day
- floss regularly
- avoid sugar and soda
These are all TRUE, but it’s not enough.
The real list would look something like:
-brush twice per day
- floss regularly
- scrape your tongue
- avoid sugar and soda
- avoid
Nano Hydroxyapatite
Discovered by NASA and dubbed the "magic bullet" for your teeth (by me, the cavity crusher)
Maybe you've seen it mentioned, or maybe it's the first time you're hearing about it.
Do you or a loved one have metal fillings?
180 million Americans have over a billion teeth with fillings, most of them being metal.
You might be worried about mercury exposure, and I'm here to break it down in plain english.
So you wanna take care of your teeth anon?
Here's how you do it:
> Avoid/Fix dry mouth & snoring
> Floss w/ expandable floss
> Lips together, teeth apart during the day
> Cleaning 2x year (can be DIY)
> Brush 2x daily
> Toothpaste w/ hydroxyapatite
> Avoid sugar & processed foods
Everyone knows to brush and floss. Dentists shout this from the rooftop only for it to be met with "yeah yeahh"
When it comes to gum health why do we need to keep it clean?
We don't physically clean the rest of our digestive tract, so what gives?
Gingivitis is today's topic
6 steps to a better smile:
1) stop using listerine & charcoal
2) soft bristle toothbrush
3) breathe through your nose (and address snoring)
4) nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste
5) minimize acid/sugar exposure to teeth
6) floss 3x per week (or more)
Puts you ahead of 90% of people.
I just witnessed one of the staff members type “google” into the chrome address bar, and then click the first result on Google which was a link to Google.
Is this a fireable offense?
There are amazing compounds you can add to improve your oral health.
Yesterday's post was a good refresher on oral hygiene. I was met with a lot of "But what about _!?"
Not every post can be comprehensive but this is a good time to go over supplemental things:
-Black Seed Oil
Nano hydroxyapatite remineralize the teeth differently than fluoride.
It adds hydroxyapatite to the holes in the tooth, which is what it’s already made of.
Fluoride interrupts the chain, sticking a fluoride ion into the hydroxyapatite rods in enamel, making it fluorapatite.
Colonoscopy is viewed as our best bet at catching early signs of colon cancer, but oral microbiome testing is cheaper, way less invasive and may provide additional insight into risk assessment.
Blows my mind that this isn’t more commonplace.
Nothing against colonoscopies btw
Xylitol was a heavy point of discussion in the Oral Health episode on
@hubermanlab
yesterday and it's time we refresh how exactly this compound works to stop cavities in their tracks.
Xylitol is a polyol, or a sugar alcohol. Immediately people have a knee-jerk reaction to scary
Had a patient 8 months ago with big cavity that he didn’t want to treat, and wanted to try oil pulling.
Today it escalated to a deep space neck infection and required surgical drainage. Would’ve killed him by the end of the week.
He wasn’t asking about oil pulling anymore.
An overwhelming amount of Twitter accounts aim to make you feel inferior under the guise of self improvement and success stories.
Don’t fall for it, you’re not as flawed as you think and they’re not as enlightened as they proclaim.
Today I asked a patient about her plans for the holidays and she completely broke down in tears.
You never know what battles people are fighting. The holidays can be extremely difficult on some that are facing finance issues, losing loved ones, illness etc.
Be kind, it’s free.
Everyone knows someone with bad breath.
I’m not talking about a little stink, I’m referring to that decaying carcass smell that radiates from someone within 5ft.
Maybe it’s you and you have no idea.
The medical term for bad breath is halitosis and I’m going to explain it all:
This works really well.
You can also freeze chamomile tea into popsicles. The ice will soothe it just like this and the chamomile is a safe way to soothe the baby’s nerves and mild sedative.
Massaging the gums helps a lot too
I refuse to give my daughters Tylenol for teething pain. My youngest recently had four molars erupt in the span of a week and so I decided to start freezing melon sticks. Works like a charm!
These types of posts pop up every once in a while like clockwork:
1) Name a single nerve that *isn’t* connected to your brain (you can’t)
2) Imagine what tooth-eating bacteria will do to your brain if you leave it in there rather than get a filling
3) Hydrogen peroxide does
I find stand up to be one of the purest forms of entertainment. There are a few that truly stand out as exceptional, and Norm MacDonald is one of them.

That brings us to a total of $775,00, and I lay it all out on here for free

Non-alcoholic beer drinkers:
Do you actually enjoy it, or is it a way to blend in at social gatherings?
Was never a big fan of beer, but this just seems like a wet towel of a product.
I don’t watch movies often but when I do it’s with intent.
Of all the movies I’ve seen, I think about There Will Be Blood all the time.
I could never figure out why it’s stuck in my brain like a thorn after all these years.
Do you have a movie like this?
Dental implants are viewed as our bionic escape from the woes of cavities.
“My teeth are jacked, I’ll just get implants eventually”
Implants have come a long way and a great *last resort* option for when a tooth must be extracted.
Today I’m going to explain it all.
A few
The top 5 things other dentists disagree with me on:
1- Night guards are worthless for the majority that wear them
2- Listerine & Chlorhexidine are harmful
3- Mouth breathing cause cavities faster than sugar
4- Salivary diagnostics are mandatory
5- Traditional fillings/crowns
Nobody cares about their toothpaste until they get told “you have cavities and gum disease”
Read this story if you don’t want to regret your decision 10 years too late:
Almost every anti-fluoride patient I see has cavities on 10+ teeth.
Most dentists say “you need fluoride that’s why you have cavities”
Instead I ask them about their diet:
Tons of lemon, charcoal, dried fruit, starches, etc.
The chemistry doesn’t care about “organic/healthy”
I don’t know who needs to hear this but you will never be “ancestral”
You live in the here and now
Anyone trying to sell you on the greatness of our ancestors as an ideal is setting you up for something that is unattainable and romanticized
Modernity doesn’t have to be a curse
Your diet sucks.
The modern diet is high in sugar & low in fermented foods. This causes a severe imbalance in the oral microbiome, causing bad bacteria to run rampant and the good bacteria unable to put up a fight.
Less sugar & acid. More probiotic rich foods like kefir/kimchi.
What heals a tooth?
Everyone wants to "heal" their teeth... in some cases this is realistic, but for most it's a pipe dream.
Teeth CAN heal, just not in the same way a burn or scrape heals.
There are three ways you can technically heal teeth:
1) Saliva
2) Exogenous
Most people brush incorrectly. Extreme scrubbing along the gum line and neglecting the inner surfaces.
The modified bass method is my preferred way to brush.
- 45 degree angle
- circular motion
- very gentle
- outside, top, and inside coverage
Today marks one year since I started this account so obviously I’m going to take a moment to say a few things followed by 12 tips to improve your oral health.
The first thing I want to say is: thank you.
Thank you to those who have taken steps to improve their oral health.
I’ve been using NOBS toothpaste exclusively for the last year and a half and today was another benchmark cleaning:
- Plaque index of 0 using a disclosing tablet
- No cavities or demineralization
- Probing depths range from 1-3mm (except for one pesky 4mm I’ve had for years)
- No
I had another cleaning/X-rays today
Zero cavities
Almost no plaque
Improvement on white spots
Zero sensitivity during screeching machine (I even fell asleep)
11 months of exclusively using NOBS to brush my teeth.
I know many share similar stories but I get just as excited.
A big milestone for

I’ve been seeing things ramping up from your posts, kudos for fighting the good fight grummz. It appears you’ve been thrusted into an Ackman-type position and you’re handling it with grace.
Teeth myth-busting, rapid fire:
- Baking soda is too abrasive:❌ False, it's extremely safe to use
- Coffee is too acidic and damage teeth: ❌ Mostly false, it's hardly acidic compared to other beverages
- Oil pulling remineralizes teeth: ❌ False, there are negligible
Zyn has taken the world by storm as a safe way to get your nicotine fix.
We may not have flying cars but we have modern tobacco-free nicotine. Zyn has become a meme and possibly responsible for a portion of the GDP due to reported increased productivity output.
Is it healther?
Health twitter is funny because you’ll get told to avoid polyester underwear and yell at the chipotle employee for seed oils followed by advice to smoke a pack of American Spirits.
It turns out I’ve misled you, let me explain.
In a previous post, I stated that NOBS has an RDA value of 85.
RDA (relative dentin abrasion) is the measure of how gritty toothpaste is. The image below shows a range of toothpaste RDA values.
High RDA= rough = damage to
Had a fully grown adult woman tell me “it’s ok let’s rawdog it” in reference to not using Novocain at her appointment just now, and not sure how to feel about it.
A recent trend has occurred in my office:
"I've been brushing and flossing but my breath is horrible!"
Any changes in medications or conditions?
"I started ozempic a few months ago"
Need to investigate the mechanism because ~60% of my patients on ozempic have this issue.
I decided I was going to be a dentist in junior year of college after becoming disillusioned with medical school.
I came home drunk from a party and had a quarter life crisis. A few days later I went to my dentist for a cleaning and he was like “it’s a pretty good job”

Is your diet ruining your teeth?
Probably.
We all know sugar and acid is horrible for your pearly whites, but what about the foods that are GOOD for teeth? 👇
I've talked at length about saliva testing, and today I'm going over an oral microbiome case from start to finish (with consent), no holds barred.
This test turned out better than I ever could have anticipated in demonstrating the utility in a test like this, you'll soon see
50% of the population uses mouthwash to fix bad breath.
Listerine is the most popular mouthwash, yet over time it actually worsens bad breath.
The alcohol destroys your microbiome and salivary flow but doesn’t eliminate the odor causing bacteria.
Better buy more listerine…
I’m not an environmental activist by any means
But sometimes I’ll think about how much garbage I generate as ONE person…
Multiplied by X billions of people, every single day.
Begs the rhetorical question of “where does it all go, and for how long can this last?”
The most misunderstood thing in your mouth:
White fillings (composite/bonding)
Is it the perfect alternative to silver fillings?
Or is it a chemical ridden plastic, leaking BPA into your body?
I had a new patient today that came in with her son ~8-10 years old.
He had an iPad with those fluorescent bulletproof cases on it, and I asked him what he was watching.
He turned the screen and showed me: he had TWO YouTube videos playing in split screen…
Is this normal now?
I have a theory that our younger generation is plagued with poor facial development as a consequence of mouth breathing secondary to childhood allergies.
Young allergies > sinusitis and adenoid hypertrophy > obstructed airway > mouth breathing habit > poor facial development,
Want to filter fluoride out of your water but don’t know where to start?
Home filtration systems are not possible for some. Pitchers are a low up front investment

Santevia
People would take dental problems more seriously if the infection could travel to your brain or heart, eventually becoming life threatening.
Oh wait, that already happens.
Today is July 1st. The new residents start today and every department in a hospital breaks at the seams.
Always avoid hospitals, but doubly so in July.
Doctors are afraid of decisive and informed patients. In some cases it’s fair to scoff at a know-it-all because they can be painfully wrong, to their own dismay. However, there are just as many that know more than we’d care to admit.
This fear stems from loss of control, as it
Cow’s milk = puts calcium back onto the teeth
Soy milk = pulls calcium out of the teeth
The stigma against cow’s milk in favor of turning soy and oats into a source of “milk” is likely a hidden factor in a declining oral health.
Since soy doesn’t have a nipple or nursing
Cavities are 100% preventable & caused by bacteria.
>50% of the population has them making it the most common disease in the world.
Streptococcus Mutans is a bacteria that clings to your teeth, eats sugar from your diet and poops acid. The acid eats your tooth and BOOM cavity.
Do you have notches on your teeth by the gum?
These are often confused with gum recession but they're a little different.
They are called Abfractions, or Non-Carious Cervical Lesions (NCCL).
Very few dentists understand how they arise and blame it on grinding, but that's only
