I hope they are expressing gratitude to
@OxfordCity
&
@OxfordshireCC
for taking the parking out of Broad Street, this making it easier & safer to hold a protest. We’ve provided more seating too for those tired after their long journeys from Devon & Bristol to attend the demo.
@RoryStewartUK
Really admire you. I’m a Labour Cllr but we really need more people like you in politics. We desperately need to build a broad coalition of the sensible.
@40PercentGerman
German vet working in the UK upset a few pet owners by saying ‘I need to kill your dog’ rather than ‘I’m afraid that your dog might have to be put down’.
@BarnabyEdwards
When I was in labour with my first baby, instead of swearing I went off on a rant about Ann Widdecombe & about the madness of shackling women in labour as you can barely move even if you want to. Completely baffled the poor midwives.
I see that Lord Winston is calling for licence plates for cycles. I have no time for aggressive lawbreaking cyclists or drivers but as a scientist who values an evidence based approach he should realise that this has never been effective in stopping dangerous driving.
My question is for you,
@TheOxfordMail
. Why do you only give the professional backgrounds of the male candidates but describe the only woman as a mother of two, when she is an elected councillor and works for a mental health charity?
@andrewjskatz
Too many people more concerned about ideological purity than winning over the hearts and minds of swing voters. There was a massive surge in membership around the leadership election. I suspect that it will outweigh the numbers who are now resigning over
@RLong_Bailey
.
@Holy_Island_BV
@SieurdePonthieu
Sounds like a similar conversation I had getting a delivery to Bryher in Isles of Scilly. The van is on its way’ Me: ‘Is it an amphibious van- there’s 28 miles of water between us & your quayside depot’.
Interesting letter in today’s Guardian about Cambridge’s congestion charge & Workplace Parking Levy proposals. Aim is to take bus companies back into local authority control where they can plan bus services to meet local need. Contrast with Oxford where there is no such plan.
First group of volunteer marshals for alternative bike wheeling route through University Parks today. Thanks to
@UniofOxford
for making this happen.
Just like the anti-Semites trotted out all the usual hideous tropes about Jews, out they come about Catholicsnow.
@pollytoynbee
wheeling out the old one about having allegiance primarily to Rome, not UK. Just waiting for comments about Papists and the Whore of Babylon.
Massive cheers for The Ivy, Oxford who have donated all their unused fresh fruit & veg to
@BonnersOxford
for distribution. Fantastic cooperation & humanity in
@CoveredMarketOx
today.
@REWearmouth
@ScottBentonMP
@GOP
I don’t think an MP from a party which restricts benefits to the first two children can seriously claim to be pro-life. This UK policy is believed to have led to an increase in abortions in UK.
40 yrs ago tonight a fellow student asked me down to Oxford for NYE. I travelled down from Liverpool hoping that at the end of the night he’d ask me out. He didn’t. He did pluck up courage a few weeks later though and after 31 years of marriage & 4 children we’re still together.
Profound thanks to the wonderful staff
@OUHospitals
Eye Hospital today for dealing with my retinal tear so quickly & well. So lucky to live near to such a great hospital.
Glad to be able to do the cushiest volunteering job yesterday: making teas & coffees for the great vaccination team at Leys Health Centre, together with Lord Mayor of Oxford,
@MarkLygo
. 300+ people received 2nd dose in the morning.
@rvandulken
High heels are definitely no impediment to cycling. I cycled to civic events in them when I was Lord Mayor of Oxford. Only dangerous shoes are those with slippery soles where you could lose your grip on pedals or backless ones, like flip-flops which are dangerous.
Thank you, Marston, for re-electing me as your councillor. I’ll do my best to speak up for you & deal with your concerns. Thanks too to
@katejo99
for being such a gracious & positive opponent. It was a friendly campaign & I’m sure you’ll be back as an excellent cllr before long,
Excellent letter from one of my constituents, which reflects many views in Marston, where bus services have been cut in recent years. LTNs have a citywide impact.
@Chuck60407556
@KTHopkins
Hey have you heard yet about the 29 people shot dead in US this weekend, bringing total of people murdered in US just in 2019 by shooting to over 8700? Wind your neck in, Pal.
@modernuklabour
Always saw myself as a John Smith Labour Member. Terrible tragedy to lose him so young. Interesting to look at those benches though: so few women!
Massive thanks to the hard working, professional counting teams for
@OxfordCity
&
@OxfordshireCC
who have done a tremendous job for Oxford & Oxfordshire over the past few days. Very proud & grateful to all of you.
Very proud of
@AnnelieseDodds
and her appointment as Shadow Chancellor. They couldn’t have found a smarter, kinder person to be the first woman Shadow Chancellor.
Had a useful meeting yesterday with
@ODS_doinggood
& Cllr Louise Upton to discuss moving this barrier or replacing it with bollards to make it easier for cyclists to access the cycle track through Croft Rd park.
Can only assume DC’s wife doesn’t drive. On the Barnard Castle text drive thing, couldn’t he have driven round the family estate for 5 minutes to check his sight rather than potentially exposing other road users to danger?
No need to spend money going to Alton Towers for their Flash Flood Flume Ride, when you can get the same experience for free courtesy of
@OxfordshireCC
on their new Headley Way/Marston Road Quickways scheme. 🤦♀️
Plenty of food in
@CoveredMarketOx
. Fresh food traders working together & can do home deliveries. Was able to but everything on my shopping list there today, including cheese.
@CllrBSilvester
My 82 yr old Mum was 4 when WW2 began. Her peers too young to stop an invasion! She voted Remain to stop us going to war with Germany again.
@BadlyParkedOx
This 4x4 was parked on DYLs just outside the audio shop in Old High Street, Headington this morning, obscuring the carriageway. I nearly got hit by a speeding car. Fortunately a passing traffic warden dealt with 4x4 driver.
Despite requesting to speak at the County Council’s Cabinet meeting to outline the impact of the proposed Marston Ferry bus gate in Marston, I’m not on the list to speak. Neither is anybody else from Marston!
Only 10.8% of Oxford East voters have signed the
#petitiontorevokearticle50
. Cambridge is on 15%. Come on Oxford East Remainers. Get your names on there!
Ward councillors weren’t told about these plans until late yesterday. I’d been told over a year ago that the Marston Ferry Rd bus gate wasn’t going ahead as there wasn’t enough research to support it. It’s back & there’s still no evidence. Very angry.
@andymacmichael
I’ve known her for nearly 20 years. She’s very smart but wears her intelligence lightly. She’s also very caring, decent, kind & hardworking. Years of experience as MEP & as academic. What’s
@JimDOfficial
’s problem?
@EmilyKerr36
@RailtonLTN
@oxford_brookes
@BBCPanorama
When I once questioned Brookes about the high use of cars by their students there response was ‘but there’s a hill’. Two octogenarian constituents of mine cycled past up that hill during that discussion.
I have hi-viz helmet with lights, hi-viz jacket & lights on my bike. On several occasions I’ve had near misses, not because drivers couldn’t see me but because they didn’t LOOK.
Darker mornings and evenings mean that cyclists need to ensure that, as well as working lights, they wear high visibility clothing to help keep them safe.
Look at the difference reflective clothing makes. Be bright, not dim.

An unfortunate use of phrasing on tonight’s BBC South bulletin: ‘Locals were upset to discover lots of dead fish including a local councillor’. Also when asked how he felt one resident’s response was ‘gutted’.
Lovely to visit
@CoveredMarketOx
today, talk to traders & hear how they are preparing for a safe return for shoppers on Monday with social distancing measures. They’ve done a magnificent job with online deliveries but it will be great to visit in person again.
End of an era: 20 years of school came to an end today. From son’s first day to youngest daughter’s prom. So many happy memories, fun, friendship & achievements to be thankful for.
@mikegalsworthy
Silly people who don’t know the difference between patriotism and nationalism. I love this country, studied its language and literature at university. Family are British since records began. I just think we’re better as part of something bigger than ourselves.
Mother in law can always be relied upon to kick off with a controversial comment. Hasn’t disappointed today: ‘Only good politician is Jacob Rees-Mogg. If only he wasn’t one of those awful Catholics’.
Thanks, Colin. I really enjoyed making them but I’m looking forward to a change now: a couple of sweaters for my nephews, a throw to finish & a pair of socks.
It’s frustrating as a female cyclist who has long campaigned with some success for cycling & walking improvements in my ward to get shouted at by a load of white men for questioning- not opposing- the benefits of LTNs & proposing other measures. Women’s views are rarely heard.
A shocking number of cyclists killed in road accidents over the past few years have been young women nurses and doctors: Anna Garratt-Quinton in Cambridge & Marta Krawiec in London are recent tragedies too.
This is a photo of Samantha Blackborow. She was a nurse, and lived in Oxford. On 3rd November 2020 she was riding in this cycle lane in Oxford when she was hit and killed by the driver of a bin lorry.
The coroner couldn't think of anything that might prevent this happening again.
I’ve asked
@OxfordshireCC
for an urgent update on the bridge across Marston Meadows. I’ve asked for timescales for the completion of the work & urged them to circulate information ASAP widely on social media, local radio and
@TheOxfordMail
. I’ll Tweet any news when I receive it.
@ReconnectingOx
@LabourOxon
It will penalise elderly widower playing bowls in N Oxford daily; disabled resident having daily support from family in N Oxford & grandparents looking after grandchildren for nurse daughter in N Oxford working at JR. That’s just a tiny bit of my casework & why I oppose this.
These shops should form part of the 15 minute neighbourhoods- where people are within easy access of key facilities. If the LTNs are jeopardising this then we need to look again at more effective traffic measures.
@DekkerDent
I’d like to put a more optimistic twist on that: Harrison intercepts Markey’s crew; saves J&K & is awarded a police bravery medal. Or- he gets sacked & then he is able to take over all childcare when surprise baby arrives
#TheArchers
Shame on you,
@allisonpearson
. For every nosy neighbour who calls the police when there’s a domestic row next door, there are many who do nothing. 139 women & many men died through domestic violence last year & you’re condemning the neighbours who called the police!
The bad news: I broke my wrist last night so can’t cycle or drive for several weeks. The good news: absolutely chuffed to have been looked after by the excellent staff of
@RIE_Lothian
, the same hospital where two of the Bay City Rollers were born!
I’m a mainstream Catholic, who opposes abortion, but I’m saddened by this. The teaching to welcome the stranger & the refugee is as much a part of Catholic teaching as abortion but which leaders who have rejected refugees have been treated like this?
Volunteering at vaccine centre today showed just how far we’ve come over last few months: at start it was lots of elderly people arriving with their carers. Now it’s lots of students whiling away the 15 minutes post vaccination on their phones.
@goldengirlnot
@themancunion
I know that many people have had a hard year but so have many young people. Mist aren’t me me me & are far less selfish than many older people. They’re paying £9K a year for poorer quality educational experience & virtual imprisonment after years of hard work
Glad to volunteer as a steward at Leys Health Centre for the
#COVIDvaccine
rollout. Very well organised & lots of grateful people happy to be vaccinated.
@jonlansman
@LabourLeft
So we just keep sitting on the fence & keep bleeding previous loyal supporters? We haven’t got a clear policy to change anyway. What crap advice
It’s great to be rid of this cast & to be back on my bike but thanks to
@OxfordBusCo
for helping me to get around the city while I was unable to cycle or drive.
@RuthCadbury
@rail_guns
If you live on one of the roads onto which traffic is displaced you don’t feel safer or healthier, either in your own home or when you leave it to walk or cycle. Many main roads are residential too, you know. LTNs create winners & losers. Before you ask, I’m primarily a cyclist.
@HIOWAA
The
@TVAirAmb
flies low over our garden as it comes in to land
@OUHospitals
. We’re always pleased to hear it. It reminds us how lucky we are to live so near to a world class hospital.
Christmas wreath completed. Thanks to The Garden for pine wreath & eucalyptus &
@BonnersOxford
for the limes & apples, both in
@CoveredMarketOx
Disappointing that the Green councillor voted for the felling of nearly 100 mature trees in a Conservation Area. During COP26 & a declared climate emergency. The damage won’t be repaired in the lifetime of most residents, if at all.
Great to see that despite the lockdown,
@OxfordCity
have put in the dropped kerbs on Croft Road estate, paid for through my ward budget, & making life easier for people with wheelchairs & buggies.
This is really excellent news for pupils wanting to cycle safely to school at the beginning of the new school term. I’ve just signed up as a marshal and hope lots of others will to make this work.
Excellent news. Just what I’ve been asking for for the last few years. We need this to become the norm within the city for all except exceptionally large loads.
A pilot scheme will see Oxford bike couriers
@PedalandPost
deliver parcels to six colleges. From 1 September, couriers will drop parcels at the Binsey Lane depot, from where bikes will take them the ‘last mile’ to the colleges, reducing city centre motor traffic.
@memzbaron
@BadlyParkedOx
Yes, he could have parked on the road. Parking on the double yellows would have been permitted because he was loading/unloading.
