My kids primary school has gone quietly vegetarian 2 days a week. This means that just 3 of the 15 weekly main meal options now contain meat or fish. Many vegan options. No complaints from parents, they have been doing it nearly a year. Institutions can drive important changes.

A Friday pic of Beyoncé on a bike (there are loads!). She loves cycling: “It’s amazing how I’m able to ride around on a bike. People kind of see me but since I’m on a bike, they think, ‘No, it’s not her.’ And by the time they realize it’s me, I’m already gone.”

This machine at Paddington is to taps what flying cars are to bicycles: a significantly more expensive, techy, yet rubbish solution. Takes 8 clicks, 3x as long, and you can’t half fill a water bottle - only does 500ml so overflows. Taps: working brilliantly since Roman times.

Fascinatingly, the 16th arrondissement, Paris’ most wealthy - like Kensington & Chelsea - now feels poor and rubbish. They’ve not got on board as want to protect their right to drive everywhere and as a consequence it’s noisy, dirty, and ugly public space. And drivers hooted!

Truly shocking - nearly half a ton of extra weight on the average passenger car in just 7 years. More likely to kill kids, higher emissions, take up more space, cause more damage. We urgently need to reverse the super-size trend.

🚙 The increased size and weight of new cars is a problem. 🚸 They are more dangerous to other road users, create more pollution (even EVs) and take up more space on our roads. 🛑 Those with bigger cars currently aren't paying the true cost to society and this needs addressing.

Oxford’s Broad street. 6 weeks ago it was a car park, this evening it’s a bustling night market. I love the new space.

A remarkable image comparing four generations of 8 year old children and the decline in how far they were allowed to roam on their own. From 6 miles in 1919 to 300 yards today. Has the world got more dangerous, or is it that our fears have grown?

This is Paris’ newest cycle lane. @christianwolmar went to bed on Thu night with roadworks outside and woke up to this on Fri morning. It is being heavily used already. As I say, pace of change is immense.

These are good! Fully pedestrianised smaller roads. The one below carried 6,000 cars until a couple of months ago (!£ and was used as a rat run to the ring road.

So the exciting news for me is that my youngest child just learned to cycle. They are completely obsessed with it and want to cycle all the time. Children find such joy in independent mobility.

This was what first made me realise how great it would be if we had fewer cars driving through our streets: a local street party. Kids playing outside and adults chatting. Teenagers skidding down the hill on someone’s go kart. This was today’s version, amazing afternoon. 🎉💚💃

It was a truly epic trip. Massive thanks to @eilidhmurray3 and @London_Cycling for letting me come along and @ParisEnSelle for an insightful & incredible tour. Only problem was I couldn’t bring any of my unexploded WW2 weaponry on the Eurostar. Oh well, next time. 🇫🇷💖

I’ve been car-free with 3 kids under 7 for nearly a year now. Here are some thoughts on how we have done it. First, I live in a city and we don’t need a car to commute. True for most car owners, but obvs if not true for you, it’s v. tricky. #carfree

Was asked to post a pic of my primary school bike racks “in rainy November”. So here they are. Yes, lots and lots of children are still cycling. Do I mind if some kids need to be driven more in winter? Dear Reader, I do not. All journeys switched are good, even if seasonal. 💖

Rather than driving down it to the school gates. A sort of de facto School Streets. It has been completely transformative. The kids enter school way, way more calm. Most kids come by active travel anyway. Those who have to drive are now encouraged to drive in a one way loop 2/2

This photo was taken about 4 years ago. People used to stop me all the time asking me about the strange bike I was using to carry my kids. That hasn’t happened for ages, because cargo bikes and trailers are now so common in Oxford. We are making progress, people. 💖🚲🌳

I found it funny last week that people thought it impossible that a mum friend had called out to me when I cycled past and asked me to take her child to school with mine on my bike. So I thought I’d tell you it happened again today with diff child - took a photo this time. 🚲

I came to Waltham Forest (famously one of the UK’s leading walking and cycling boroughs) for a fancy-dress party so naturally I wanted to tag on a tour of interesting street design beforehand. @deekinstow showed me around. This is what I saw, a 🧵🪡

88% of adults can cycle, but only 74% of UK adults have a drivers license (76% of white adults, 53% of black adults). Let's be clear, not everyone can cycle but way more adults can cycle than can drive. Source: (2015-2019); BHF 2017

One MILLION car trips disappeared in and around the Cowley LTNs since their launch just over 500 days ago (-2k car trips/day net). Traffic evaporation works. Data from p48 & 53 of , extrapolated over full 500 days. Chart my own.

It’s taking a bit of senior management time, in that it’s 3 teachers for 15-20 mins at peak time. But they get to greet many of the kids coming in, and apparently the difference in calm transition and stress reduction for the kids has made it worth it 4/5

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Anyway - geography of school means this is possible, not for everyone, but wanted to share! School had been on list for school streets for more than a year but wasn’t happening so just cracked on. 5/5

This regressive proposal benefits the richest, who drive more and bigger cars. Instead, why not do something transformative like fund free buses across England (£2.5Bn) or dedicate all fuel duty (£25bn) to improving walking, cycling, & public transport?

Across the country, people are reliant on their cars to get to work. But the Tories want to raise fuel duty in the midst of a cost of living crisis. Labour is calling on the government to rule out a fuel duty rise at the next Budget.
