We need to talk space-efficiency in transport 📏📐 Why is it that while technological advancement in other sectors goes to micro, for cars it’s gone macro? 🐭🐘 We’ve only got a finite space to work with in cities! Why are we using that space for bigger metal boxes? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Great coverage of Oxford’s transport plans by @SkyNews with a valuable lesson👇🏼 Ghent had to weather a big backlash to become the greener & healthier city it is today. The Mayor said it was a bumpy ride but very worth it!🚶🏽‍♂️👩🏼‍🦼🚲🚌🚊🚙🌱 Fab reporting, thanks @tomheapmedia ! 🙏🏼

I’m a strong advocate for all of Oxford City inside the ring road to become 20mph There would be huge safety benefits as this case study evidence shows. It would be a valuable step towards to Vision Zero @AndrewGant3 @misteredgeley @20sPlentyOxon

Belfast and Edinburgh reduced their speed limits from 30 mph to 20. The result: "The main outcome of these schemes was a reduction in road casualties at all levels of severity."

I spoke yesterday in the decision meeting against this proposal, as I do not believe it is what is best for Cowley residents. The last minute change to the recommendations did not - in my view - take sufficient account of Vision Zero. Sadly the decision went the other way

To explain the subtweet, today the County Council's Cabinet Member for Highway Management approved Oxford's first Taxi Superhighway, allowing taxis an exclusive shortcut through otherwise closed residential areas.

Congestion in Oxford is the core issue we must solve to improve our transport system 🚌🚲🚶🏼 🌹 @LabourOxon successfully turned the Tory protest motion into a motion of responsible government and it was voted through unanimously My speech from Tuesday's Full Council meeting🎥👇🏼

We'd all like our roads to be safer, with cleaner, less polluted air. Communities across the county are choosing to bring their local speed in built up areas down to 20mph. See how your community can reduce to 20 #20MPH #SaferPaceSaferPlace

We’re now onto motions from councillors. First up is @Charlie_Hicks_ (Lab, Cowley) who is advocating making policy with “the wellbeing of Future Generations” in mind, following an Act passed in Wales. “In Wales this has led to diverting money from motorways to public transport.”

Car use is down, cycling is up — traffic evaporation is happening. LTNs are working. LTNs are a hugely effective policy tool for increasing active travel — good for safety, health, wellbeing and the climate 🌍🚶🏽‍♀️👨🏼‍🦽🚲🌱 #evidencebasedpolicy #whatworks

I continue to be concerned that in taking decisions on highways changes in Oxon, Vision Zero is not prioritised highly enough Public Health, Fire & Rescue and Highways should all be accountable for preventing road violence. I’ll be taking this up with @AndrewGant3 @LeyNathan

A key principle for creating a fair and just transport system for the 21st century: ⭐️ Everyone needs access to movement 🚗 Access to movement is not the same as driving a private car 🚶🏽‍♀️🚲🚌 🚗🚊🌱Access to movement = a transport system with a choice of multiple ways to move
@OxfordClarion
Oxford Clarion

Cllr @Charlie_Hicks_ (Lab, Cowley): “Movement does not have to mean a privately owned metal box with four wheels. We need a shift in how we think. Think back to cigarette bans in pubs, or car seatbelts: people don’t remember nitty-gritty details, they remember if a policy works.”
