Today I visited the Waltham Forest borough of London. Too much good stuff for one post. One vignette: these green cycle hangers. There are hundreds of them and more coming w/ 3000 people on the waiting list. This authority is encouraging & enabling climate-saving active travel.

There really is no other way than safe, segregated space. Bikeability is bullshit. Want Dutch levels of cycling? Take cars and bikes out of conflict. This takes political courage and ££££. Tired of messing about.
After trying to cycle from Hyde Park to Hammersmith with my 11-year-old today to get her confidence up, and having a 4x4 beep repeatedly at us to force us into the kerb (see cross on map), I've reluctantly decided we can't go out again on the roads until she is much older

Where were these people at election time? Not eligible to vote in Oxford is the answer. The candidate who posted videos supporting these LTNs doubled his predecessor’s majority; the candidates standing against the LTNs scraped together a couple hundred votes.

For Oxford, the proposed LTNs fit into the spaces left behind by the "normal-traffic neighbourhoods" which already feature filtered permeability. Doing these LTNs means enabling active travel over a huge scale. This should transform the school run, for example.

This one basic insight. We need our councillors and leaders breathing it, speaking it relentlessly.
It's not about whether you personally want to or need to drive. It’s about understanding the simple truth that in cities, if everyone tries to move by car, no one moves much at all. So the more of us that are enticed to walk, bike & take transit, the better it is for EVERYONE.

Our new cabinet have a chance to overrule their officers’ recommendation on Tuesday. Keep the LTNs, keep the bollards.
ANPR cameras should be a last resort option for filters. I can't stress this enough. Where physical control is removed, people are chased of the street once again and it doesn't take much to chase them off.

Turns out a cheaper way is to make it harder to drive. Gent (Belgium) leaders initially wanted to learn from Utrecht but way too far behind (like all cities) so opted for the “make driving harder” solution — and achieved their 2030 cycling mode share practically overnight. ...
