Oxford–Bristol direct trains are coming back – though in a small way at first. From 14 September, GWR is planning to run two return services between the cities on Saturdays, using 125mph Intercity trains. A direct service last ran in 2003.

East West Rail, the project to reopen the railway from Oxford to Cambridge, has announced its preferred route east of Bedford. The line would cross the East Coast Main Line at Tempsford, pass the new town of Cambourne, then approach Cambridge from the south.

Oxford has been reconnected to Milton Keynes by rail – though there’s still a while before passenger trains will run. A track-laying machine made the connection at lunchtime today, at the point where the East-West Rail line crosses HS2.

The concept of a countywide cycle network for Oxfordshire has got the go-ahead. The Strategic Active Travel Network, approved at a meeting this afternoon, will link towns, villages and railway stations through traffic-free and low-traffic routes.

Oxford City Council has ordered £35,000 of benches, plants and steel planters for Market Street, by the northern entrance to the Covered Market. They will be delivered by May in time for the experimental pedestrianisation scheme this summer. Funding comes from a Government grant.

The new £6.9m Covered Market masterplan was signed off by @OxfordCity ’s Cabinet yesterday. Its standout feature is a redesign of the Market Street entrance: a traffic-free public square with seating on the street, and a ‘communal space’ within the market with a glazed roof.

A new cycleway has been approved on Kennington Road and Whites Lane past Radley – creating a traffic-free route all the way from Oxford to Abingdon, and improving @sustrans National Cycle Route 5. Construction is expected to start in the next 9–12 months.

The £300m HIF1 Didcot relief road has been refused planning permission by @OxfordshireCC ’s planning committee, voting 7 against, 2 for. The committee heard arguments yesterday that the traffic forecasts were implausible and the road went against county transport policies.

Reopening the Cowley railway branch to passengers has moved a step closer. @OxfordCity has awarded a £499,000 contract for design work around the two new stations: Oxford Science Park (near Littlemore) and Oxford Business Park (Blackbird Leys).

Oxford hospital staff are to get free Park & Ride bus travel from the end of April. Staff at the JR, Churchill and Nuffield will simply need to show their ID badge to the bus driver to be let on for free at Thornhill, Redbridge or Oxford Parkway.

Sewage is now being discharged into almost every river upstream of Oxford. Thames Water treatment plants on the Cherwell, Windrush, Ray, Evenlode and the Thames itself are dumping sewage via their storm overflows. In Witney, the discharge has now been going for over 100 hours.

Cowley Road has bucked the nationwide trend for store closures, according to new research by @CoHSATOxon . Between 2018 and 2023, empty/vacant shops fell from 12 to 11, while the national rate rose from 11.5% to 13.9%. On average, 16 shops close and 16 open on the road each year.

Residents of Morrell Avenue are calling for their road to become a Low Traffic Neighbourhood. The residents’ association says 70% of current traffic is using it as a “rat run”. They want a filter/bus gate by Union Street, with traffic being sent via Gipsy Lane instead.

Chiltern Railways has lodged formal plans to run 35 trains a day each way between Oxford and Milton Keynes, half-hourly through the day. Expected to start in spring 2025, trains will call at Bicester Village, the new Winslow station, and Bletchley (where a few will terminate).

Oxford city council is planning to invest £54,980 to install bike racks in 6 locations in the city centre and East Oxford. The 75 stands are Sheffield 'Bilton' stands with a mid rail, that will hold up to 150 bikes. 1/3

Oxford University is to remove Rupert Murdoch’s name from the professorship he endowed, the “Rupert Murdoch Professorship of Language and Communication”. It says the current title is preventing it from “attracting the widest range of candidates”.

Oxford’s original bus gates are 25 years old tonight. The “Oxford Transport Strategy” came into effect at 12am on 1 June 1999, closing city centre roads to cars and pedestrianising Cornmarket altogether.

Numberplate recognition will be used to enforce the banned turn at The Plain from Cowley Rd into Iffley Rd, in another decision taken at this morning’s @OxfordshireCC meeting. @andrewgant3 called the Plain “the single most important and difficult place for Oxfordshire traffic”.

The Botley Road rail bridge will not reopen this autumn as expected. Network Rail say work is behind schedule. Local MP @LaylaMoran called the situation “utterly shambolic” and is calling on the Department for Transport to compensate businesses and residents.

Four Oxford primary schools, and one in Didcot, are being proposed for new ‘School Street’ schemes. The immediate approach roads would be closed to most motor vehicles at pick-up and drop-off times, with the aim of improving safety for children walking or using scooters or bikes.

Number plate recognition cameras could be installed at the Plain to prevent traffic making the banned left turn from Cowley Road into Iffley Road. @OxfordshireCC says motorists making the turn are a hazard for “vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and particularly cyclists”.

The Oxford–Didcot railway line is likely to be closed for up to three weeks due to the failure of Nuneham Viaduct over the Thames. The speed limit was reduced to 20mph in January, 5mph last week, then closed entirely today, with the line said to be “sinking” into the ground.

Traffic lights are to be trialled at the Plain roundabout in early February. Temporary lights will hold back traffic from Iffley Road and Magdalen Bridge so that buses and other traffic from St Clements have space to enter. The trial is planned to run at 3pm-7pm from 5th–9th Feb.

@OxfordshireCC ’s Cabinet has signed off a £4m programme of works to move closer to ‘Vision Zero’, eliminating deaths and serious injuries on the county’s roads. £1.6m will be spent on the junctions with the worst incident records, which could include the Plain in Oxford.
