last night? 🔪 Here's a little montage of my fave bits. Thank you for all the beautiful messages of support!
What was your favourite meal and what would you cook for my brief of 'something to nourish and restore'?

What a glorious day in Southend to visit and chat to the very charming
@BootstrapCook
! For an upcoming
@BBCFoodProg
'Life Through Food' episode all about Jack's life, work, fame, the internet, food snobbery & much more - we covered a lot. Also, what about this spice collection 👌
I shudder to think of the welfare, environmental and quality sacrifices that have been made to be able to sell a whole goddamn chicken for less than the price of a crap coffee
@sainsburys
It's my Mum and Dad's 47th wedding anniversary today, when a little Mauritian girl met and married a Turkish Cypriot in London 🥰 Pics from then and now. And that wee one is me.
Good morning. Starting the weekend with simit, tahini, harnup pekmezi (carob molasses) 👌
If you don't know about carob molasses, you need to. Carob seed pods cooked down into molasses, no sugar added. Deep, caramely, jammy, chocolate undertones. SO good. Amazing with tahini.
The upcyled container pond is now complete & I couldn't be more delighted with it. Shallow beach for critters with log providing access, large stone protruding for bathing birds. Plants inc. pink pygmy waterlily, purple iris, dwarf horsetail & oxygenating hornwort

I am really so thrilled to announce I am now officially part of the

We're doing a
@BBCFoodProg
about the great British CAFF (not cafés)!
So tell us, what's in your perfect fry-up? And are you team red sauce or brown sauce? 🍳
Husband has just discovered that

have stopped selling their Pomegranate & Acai smoothie and is so distraught that he is literally applying for jobs there to "go undercover and bring it back from the inside".
I have to agree, it was their best one! 😖
Have you heard of the Staffordshire Oatcake? I hadn't! (hint, it looks like a pancake) In today's

My Dad just sent me a pic of these he picked from a public park in Dartford southeast London. And he says they're early stage almonds.
What? There are almond trees just growing in public in London? Do they mature to the almonds we know? And are these actually almonds?
🤯
As a half Turkish Cypriot, today's
@BBCFoodProg
ep is one I've wanted to make for some time. Halloumi / hellim, the story of the island of Cyprus and its cheese. It even features my Dad ❤️

Excellent TV incoming, enjoy!
It's not often I'm in North London and so I made the most of it after today's bake sale with a tasty 3-stop tour around Green Lanes: Turkish tantuni (mince lamb wrap, bread soaked in meat juices), mercimek çorbasi (lentil soup) and gözleme. Great eating.
Buenos días Colombia! 🇨🇴 My gosh it is good to be back (a small miracle with all the UK chaos). I'll be here for ~6wks in Cartagena & Medellin. Looking forward to the warmth, food, people, music and nature - I'll be sharing on Insta. My roof terrace in Cartagena & ydays sunset
Today on the organic farm in central Portugal, Paolo & I picked oranges. We all ate one after a lunch of fish & potatoes, thick skins you need to score with a knife & sweet, juicy flesh. This year’s flowers are already open and the orange blossom fragrance is quite something 🍊
I am back in Lisbon where it's 28C, everyone is extremely friendly and a really very good Nepalese meal that fed 6 of us full to bursting, plus a bottle of vinho verde alvarinho, cost just €75 - in total. For this and many other reasons, Lisbon is one of my favorite ever cities.
It is astounding to me that not all children from low income families receive free school meals. Qualification only if annual household earning is less than £7400 (not inc bens) - this is the most restrictive eligibility threshold of all the UK

Finally made it. A trip that was booked in 2019, it feels a long time coming. Buenos días Buenos Aires, where I'll be for the next 6 weeks, the last half solo. I plan to take it slow and relish discovering a new city again. And maybe a tango lesson or two. Apartment in Palermo 🇦🇷
A seemingly inevitable next step on my fermentation journey - I'm going to try my hand at making country wine. All the gear and some idea, thanks to
@sandorkraut
excellent book. One carboy for elderberry and blackberry wine, the other for rosehip wine. Excited.
I am somewhat overwhelmed by all the very lovely and supportive messages about cooking on this

Christmas special on Thursday. THANK YOU ✨

Made my first sourdough focaccia. The dough was so wet I was convinced it would be a disaster half way through last night. I was wrong. Lunch gonna be good.
DYK to remove stubborn label glue from glass: mix a paste of (any) oil + bicarbonate of soda, spread over the glue, leave for 20 mins, wipe off, wash under hot water with a scouer. I find it the most effective method. This whole bottle was covered in glue, not a scrap left.

ep exploring the importance of food in building community, shaping identity & providing culturally appropriate spaces for refugees & asylum seekers in Glasgow. Today I reflected on my own heritage as the daughter of a war refugee
I would like to state that learning how to make sourdough was on my list of 2020 goals, decided back in December. Way before lockdown 🥳 Anyway, here are my first ever loaves. Plenty of room for improvement but really pleased with my first go. Tastes 👌
After listening to the excellent
@BBCFoodProg
beans episodes I was inspired to finally take a look at the
@Hodmedods
website and had a wee splurge - what took me so long! This is so my kind of retail therapy - many beautiful British food stuffs. I'm particularly excited about:
Absolutely incredible winner of the Global Food Champion

A good gardening thing anyone can do, no outside space required. These mint stems from a Sainsburys pack of mint. Stripped lower leaves, put in water, 2 weeks later they have roots. Pot each into soil. Keep on sunny windowsill or outside. 5 free mint plants thanks very much
I had never tried cooking with MSG prior to making this episode. Last night I made a noodle soup that was just missing something. It didn't need more salt, it needed more umami. Added a sprinkle of MSG, nailed it. New fave condiment. Tune into
@BBCFoodProg
today at 12:30 on BBCR4
How is this the first time I've tried a loquat..? Called nêspera in Portuguese, eaten straight off a tree on my host’s farm. Flavour btwn orange / peach, glorious. Grows all over the Med. Beaut smooth & shiny seeds too, like polished wood - people make jewellery out of them.
Parents going through old photos during lockdown. This one I haven't seen before, about 20/21yo. Turkish Cypriot boy meets Mauritian girl in London. Get married in secret in a Bloomsbury registry office a couple of years later, pulling in two witnesses off the street. Ahhhh 💙
My raspberries are almost ready for picking. Last year I harvested a whopping 2.7kg from just a few canes in a shady corner of my very small urban garden. I created a little video ode to my fave berry and 10 reasons why they are so great to grow:
As part of our upcoming
@BBCFoodProg
about cafes, today
@SlamGrist
& I met up with my Dad who owned two cafes for over 21 years. We went to the one in Woolwich (it's still there) where I worked on Saturdays from the age of 13 and which still has our surname 'Kaz' above the door!
Despite millions of
@BBCFoodProg
listeners being v familiar with
@SheilaDillon
's voice, I’m not sure many of us know about the Sheila beyond the radio & food. I was determined to find out and I'm so delighted she said yes to being interviewed for A Day Well Spent. Link in bio.
Quite thrilled to finally be able to announce that alongside
@adamliaw
&
@lonelyplanet
's food editors, I helped create the 500 strong list in their BRILL new book:
#UltimateEatlist
, the world's top 500 food experiences! 😘 Been sitting on that for about a year 😅

And then advertising for a range of supplements plastered all over the New York subway, with the tag line 'Food Is Not Enough'.
It literally is enough, if it's not all ultra processed. Good food is everything.

Making the most of living near Tooting and the excuse to go off piste this year. Fab South Indian Christmas dinner spread delivery. And no one had to cook! Tidings one and all 🎄
Tomorrow I'm off to Barcelona for 5 weeks on my own. For some much needed down and me time, intensive 1-to-1 Spanish lessons, & to properly immerse myself in a city I haven't been to before. I'm permitting the husband to visit for one weekend 😅 Excited.
Everyone has a country that the whole world seems to have been to except them. Mine was Greece. But for the first time ever, I'm here. Specifically Crete and it's great to be here.
