I’m surprised hospitals haven’t embraced a partnership with Uber or Lyft yet. Just have a hospital account that security/reception/ombudsman has and send them on their way. East to track. And no risk of vouchers going missing or getting sold (which was a thing in Philly).

Are they really comparing the work of LPNs with unlicensed assistive personnel?!? That seems pretty offensive to LPNs who have earned degrees and passed national certifications. Vs. whatever it takes to be a UAP. 1 semester of clinical? 1-2 month training?

This is the pandemic routine. Things are out of control, then numbers start becoming manageable and drop a lot. Hospitals feel comfortable, cut travelers hours and then full contracts, numbers tick up again in 6-8 weeks, there’s no staff, being travelers back. Rinse and repeat.

It's complicated. There were a lot of systems issues and assignment challenges that led to this in my opinion. I've seen other articles that talked about her assignment (sort of like a resource nurse) for the day, but she was stretched very thin.

I'm not surprised. I've gotten several texts per day the past 2 weeks for between $5K-8K per week offered for ICU. That's life changing money for some and the hospitals won't go after their licenses, they'll just end their contracts and they'll find another company and hospital.

Haha. My wife and I had a funny conversation about this. She’s a med surg RN and teacher. I’m an icu nurse. She mentioned her family said someone was in a coma. I said ‘oh yeah? What exactly is that? They intubated and sedate or just lying there unresponsive?’ She got mad at me.

I already thought this was a thing. Anecdotally in my 12 years as a nurse, I'd say 90% of the PCTs I've encountered were either in nursing school or pre-reqs. This was mostly in ICUs in the northeast at large hospitals though.

There could also be a choice bias from older students when the university tells them all of the pre-reqs and costs related to something that will likely take 4 years. ADN programs seem to be flexible and package things neater, faster and cheaper. (And I wish I chose that route.)

One nurse definitely led to worse outcomes for at least one patient and was promptly let go. I doubt the hospital pursued any action against her. If you haven't yet, you should read "The Good Nurse" to see the lengths hospitals will go to to avoid problems.

Can you find any high school JV or higher team that put up a 40 spot every week and went 0-10? 40 a game wins state championships in many, many stages. 7 wins might be comfortable but you’ll never win anything of substance.

They let you try IVs with your students?!? I felt like this was a glaring deficiency of nursing education. Or at least mine. :)

Could be. I think it provides a much more sustainable version. You can have a solid squad with 12 runners and a goalie. Traditional requires closer to 20. And that you only need a minimum of 7 to get started. Way more games, playing time and touches for all.
