Webdev is seen as a feminine practice and the hate on javascript/css + the push for typescript and increasing complexity is an attempt to “legitimise” development as engineering practice while pushing out voices (woman, queer, poc) that were once liberated by the web 🤐

Just do everything on the server and send the result to the client instead of building an API so the client can turn the data into UI, everything is so much easier. This is why LiveView is so good. More secure, device performance is ignored, dev ex is better. #MyElixirStatus

After a discussion that came up on the @gleamlang discord the other night I went ahead and wrote a thing about phantom types in Gleam. They're a nifty type trick you can employ in loads of languages to get some extra safety for free.

The cool thing about lustre is that you can run a component on the server or the client without changing the component code.. just take the code and run it somewhere else 😎 @gleamlang compiling to the beam and js unlocks so much power its ridiculous 🔥🔥

These problems can happen in LiveView too, but here's the thing. It really boils down to: - know *when* to use js. If you can do it in js, use js. - when you have to do it server side, make sure you give good loading UI.

@eileenmnoonan Compared to Elm, ootb you get: - an actual dev server - a bundler because its 2024 - an LSP and formatter built into the language itself - first party support for ssr (eg elm pages) and isomorphic apps (eg lamdera) And thats after a *year*. Imagine where we’ll be after 12 🤯

A solid web framework should let you choose where that state lives and make it easy to change that decision. Lustre applications are composed of Apps and the killer feature is these can run anywhere without modification: - SSR - SPA - web component - Realtime server component

Want to get stuck in straight away? Server components are still under-documented right now, but the benefit of truly isomorphic components is you can write things for the client today and selectively run bits on the server tomorrow.

@gleamlang is quite aggressive with its commitment to its “one way to do things”. Sometimes its frustrating but its basically always a worth trade to keep the language: - super simple - super productive @louispilfold is a clever cookie 💕

programming would be such a bliss if programming languages start to enforce doing things in one way. one architecture. just make shit done without figuring out what is the framework author fascination this month. make. programming. easy.

It cant be understated how dire the state of trans healthcare in the uk is. Laurels, my closest GIC, is now offering first appointments to those that have been waiting since july *2016*. This is an intentional and systematic attempt to eradicate trans people. They wont win.

Hey friends. I’m looking for a junior-to-mid backend engineer to join my team (which is just me) at @Veeps . It's a great team (still just me). 100% @elixirlang and LiveView, but backend heavy. DMs are open 🤓

@adolfont Really function captures are used 90% in pipes for positional piping, and 10% of the time in places where you’re passing something into (or similar) and need the “hole” to say where the data goes Outside of those contexts id say its pretty unidiomatic!

@andrewamann @mermitling @businessbarista @harryhurst Hi. What the fuck does what I do in my free time have anything to do with my ability to complete the job. What this really does is give you a convenient “not sure of their technical ability” excuse to not hire anyone you don’t personally like.

@bitandbang @alephnaught2tog parseInt has some gotchas [“1”, “2”, “3”].map(parseInt) won’t do what you expect. [“1”, “2”, “3”].map(Number) will work grand!
