I've always had 6 months or 1-year contracts while a postdoc at the NIH, and that was overwhelming as an international trainee. Today I made it official that every international postdoc in my lab is getting a 5-year visa period. I want all of them to feel safe, in all senses.
🚨PLEASE HELP TO SPREAD THE WORD!
We are revising (for free!) research articles from female principal investigators from low- and middle-income countries and helping them prepare research papers for submission to scientific journals. Criteria here: [1/2]
One of "my students" learned Flow Cytometry 1.5 months ago. She sent me this picture last night.
The secret: passion!
Passionate students can do unimaginable things and this just confirm that I can't have any other profession than being a PI one day. This made my day.
🚨COELHO LAB is opening its doors this fall!🚨
I am BEYOND thrilled to make NYC my home and the Sinai faculty my friends as I join the Microbiology department at
@IcahnMountSinai

Our paper comparing immune memory response to four COVID-19 vaccines was just published at
@CellCellPress
!
I led the memory B cell (MBCs) part of the study, which I am summarizing below since it changed a little bit since the preprint version (got even cooler!).
A thread:🧵
Society grants for postdocs are 90% awarded to HHMI labs or well-funded investigators' labs. It's hard to break this cycle if the people reviewing the grants keep selecting those who don't need the money, while awarding postdocs who will likely receive federal funding anyway.
We are thrilled to announce the 2024 class of JCC Fellows! These 26 Fellows were selected out of one of the biggest applicant pools in our history based on their exceptional doctoral research accomplishments, innovative research plans, and their chosen scientific mentors. 1/
Never, but never, underestimate a woman that needs to overcome language, prejudice, cultural and education barriers, and now needs to breast pump twice a day, but still, have 7 papers and one patent in revision, and outlines rebuttal letters while in the lactation room
@Momademia
As an underrepresented scientist (economic, ethnic) that got her 1st paper after 2.5 years of postdoc, this initiative to reduce the period of fellowship is extremely exclusionary.
During my fellowship I got more 22 papers after that; unprivileged people need TIME to grow,
@NIH
.
Our paper is out! We described the first human mAb to block Plasmodium gametes, the stage that initiates infection on mosquitoes. TBV vaccines are a promising approach to contribute to malaria elimination! (1/3)
@womeninmalaria
@WiParasitology
I could say many things after reading this, but what I want to say is THANK YOU
@VirusesImmunity
, THE GREATEST EXAMPLE THAT A SCIENTIST CAN BE AWESOME/ SUPERSTAR/HERO AND STILL BE HUMAN. Antidote to toxic principal investigators | Nature Medicine
The first Coelho lab paper is out!🎉
Please check it out, including supplemental doc with improvements from the preprint version.
I am truly thankful to ALL amazing authors that made this possible, and I can't wait to show the new research we are doing now!
I love my (very motivated, engaged, amazing)
team!!!
We just got funding to study B cell responses to mpox vax and infection in humans, and we are hiring more post-docs.
Sinai offers housing in Manhattan and I pay way above the NIH payline.
Join us for 🍫,🌯 + EXCITING SCIENCE!
Yay!!!! Congratulations
@profshanecrotty
!
In the last Keystone meeting I attended, 4 different B cell papers from his lab were mentioned in different talks, so yes, this is award is highly deserved!
@ljiresearch
So happy! First Coelho lab paper 🍾.
Thanks to
@VivianaSimonLab
and
@florian_krammer
for giving me the opportunity to be part of this awesome dept, to the wonderful collaborators (the best collab!!), to my amazing team and
@IcahnMountSinai
for being this sensational place to work
Our paper on discovery of a potent human mAb capable to block Plasmodium transmission to mosquitoes is available on BioRvix. I hope you can enjoy reading about LMIV230-01, which I named after our lab's name!
It must be an incredible privilege to write scientific articles in English when English is your first language.
I just truly realized this after 5 years in US and now writing my first project in Portuguese. SO MUCH EASIER.
Lucky you, Native English Speaker Scientist...
Packing up my desk today and after 5 years of Duffy lab, I am leaving NIH. It breaks my heart and I'll miss my lab friends and "my students", but new great things are waiting for me in San Diego. And yes, the idea of running on the beach after a long day of work blows my mind!
Our paper (from my great time as
@NIAIDTraining
postdoc) is now published at
@ImmunityCP
. We identified highly neutralizing human antibodies able to block Plasmodium (malaria) transmission to mosquitoes (1/4)
…. (1/4)
This week my postdoc
@raiannafantin
and I start a 3-weeks Manuscript Writing training for 60 students from Latin America.
It feels good to be in a place of privilege and be able to help others in science!
Our lab just received the NIAID intramural Summer Faculty award, which will fund us to collaborate with an amazing NIH lab in Bethesda this summer!
EXCITING TIMES 🥳
@wendy_bickmore
Journals still didn't learn a valuable lesson: what about among 3 reviewers, you choose one postdoc? You'll help someone to improve the CV and will find that reviewer you're looking for (you'll be positively surprised with the great reviews we can write!)
#AcademicChatter
My first invitation to serve as reviewer in a NIH study section!🥳
Happy for the opportunity to contribute and mainly to learn a lot from this experience.
My postdoc
@ToxoTiff
, my collaborators, and I, have dedicated the past two months of our lives to this
@HHMINEWS
application! I understand it's extremely competitive, but the mere opportunity to engage in scientific discourse + DEIA initiatives made it all worthwhile!
PI goals that I didn't know I had: not being able to talk with my postdoc during the post session because her poster is so popular! Go
@raiannafantin
!!
📢Virologists at
#AAI2024
, check out the poster this afternoon by
@raiannafantin
, a postdoc in
@camilahcoelho
's lab at the Center for Vaccine Research and Pandemic Preparedness in the Microbiology Dept of Mount Sinai.
Watch the antibody⬇️, it's about to hypermutate & hulk out!
My supervisor just wrote a 3-page recommendation letter in support to something I am applying to. I'm still WOWing the letter after 20 minutes of having read it. 3 pages of WOW! When I moved to US I chose the right mentors and I am grateful for that. Feels good to be supported!
@depflordelis
Como uma cidadã andando de tornozeleira porque matou o marido pode representar o povo brasileiro e ainda receber fatia milionária que o presidente distribuiu pra comprar a câmara? Você devia ter vergonha!!
I was selected by the
@acmcip
@ASTMH
committee to present my work on mAbs to block malaria transmission at
@ImmunologyAAI
meeting in Honolulu next year! Extremely honored to be in the same session as Dr.
@drleish
and Dr. David Artis. Thanks Dr. Petersen
@kalicat15
and ACMCIP!
The latest work from our laboratory is online.
Here, we dissected the genetic antibody repertoire of 603 individual plasmablasts derived from five individuals who received a monovalent XBB.1.5 vaccination either with mRNA (Moderna or Pfizer) or adjuvanted protein (Novavax). [1/4]
My first talk presenting data from Coelho lab + our exceptional collaborators!
Please be sure to watch out for the soon-to-be-published paper.

seminar. Glad to hear there might be more than just antibodies to protect us 😬.
Part of my interview to
@Nature
regarding the views that the K99 eligibility should not be reduced to 2 years if we want to maintain the efforts made so far to increase diversity in the biomedical workforce.
Movers just picked up our stuff.
Final meetings & packing & moving with an infant is stressful.
But tonight is my goodbye party in
@profshanecrotty
's house (🥳) and
@VivianaSimonLab
just sent me this pic reminding me of what is expecting us.
Bye, San Diego...
It was amazing!!!🙏🏻
Thanks
@CellCellPress
for highlighting my work and personal history. I am proud of my path to get here, proud of my parents & grateful to
@profshanecrotty
for his outstanding mentorship. I am very happy that
@IcahnMountSinai
chose me — now I can empower other young scientists!
We are pleased to bring you the
@CellCellPress
paper of
#FacesOfCell
Dr. Camila Coelho (
@camilahcoelho
), “SARS-CoV-2 vaccination induces immunological T cell memory able to cross-recognize variants from Alpha to Omicron”
Can you imagine how privileged I am to get grantsmanship advice from
@VivianaSimonLab
@florian_krammer
, Peter Palese, Adolfo Garcia-Sastre all at the same time? Plus, there is literally an e-mail chain just improving the title of my NIH proposal right now.
I feel lucky to be here
Today was my first experience reviewing for a journal with IF>8.
I still signed my name.
I know the risks as an early career researcher, but again, if you're being polite and contributing to other people's work, I don't see any reason for not doing that.

Rebeca Andrade has won a total of 14 Olympic and World medals and is the most decorated Latin American gymnast of all times. Her mother cleans houses and has seven kids. Her brother used to take her by bike to the practices because they didn't have money for the 🚌.
Amazing.
I don’t think people realize how incredible Rebeca Andrade’s story is…
Born in a favela, walked two hours each way for gymnastics practice & has overcome THREE ACL tears.
There’s also barely any funding in Brazil for gymnastics.
BRAZILIAN QUEEN! 🇧🇷👸🏽
Exciting week for our group: we got PBMCs from six individuals infected with H5N1 influenza from an amazing collaborator!
Stay tunned because
@Vishal_N_Rao
et al will work hard to identify the binding (antibody) epitopes for an avian influenza strain infecting humans.
Hiring a very experienced lab manager was the best decision I've made as
#newPI
.
Buying 100 pounds of
@Toblerone
to keep in the lab was probably the second one.
Not even in my wildest dreams I would have imagined I would be reading about CD8 T cells, immune inflation, and T cell-mediated vaccine protection at 8pm on a regular Tuesday to write the Discussion of our first lab (a B cell lab!) paper.
Well, against data, no arguments.
It's official!
@CNPq_Oficial
approved the first postdoc fellowship for a Brazilian trainee to work in the Coelho lab. Exciting times, the lab is growing so fast😍
Sorry for the spam-tweets but after 5 years working at the NIH and not being allowed to expose my political views it feels so good to do it!
#LulaPresidente2022
Spent the Friday visiting old friends at the intramural NIAID (and accidentally met others in the hallways!) to discuss collaborations and new scientific adventures.
I carry only good memories as a NIH trainee alumni!
@NIAIDTraining
I couldn't be happier and I feel extremely honored to be the recipient of this award. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Mali!
Thank you so much for the opportunity,

Our website is live!
Thanks to our team member Hallie Cohn, who joined us to work on flow cytometry but has a tremendous website building talent as well!
@profshanecrotty
lab is on fire this year!!
(Maybe that's why he is out for a conference and still, at 8:30am, there were a dozen people in the lab doing experiments) — people are just naturally excited to be here!
Congrats
@harrysutton93

Trying to survive a toddler's "Terrible 2" phase w/sleep regression + preparing a talk for a conference later this week + responding to reviewers + Abstract to AAI.
Science is easy, folks! Raising a 2-year-old while trying to be a good PI is the real challenge
@Momademia
Choose a mentor that says: " I learned a lot writing this article with you, it was a very pleasant experience!", when we all know that he learned 1% and I learned 99%!
It's very rewarding to work with someone we admire both scientifically and as a person.
Even prouder to be part of
@IcahnMountSinai
. Here, to interview PhD candidates, we are now trained to mitigate bias in the interview process.
Identifying personal and cultural nuances is key for selecting the REAL best candidates, not the ones that society told us can thrive.
Last paper from my training at NIAID! In collaboration with

The last paper from my super productive time at

We suggest that Bamlanivimab can alter epitopes recognized by the B cell repertoire, and that the mAb treatment can help determining the fate of B cells in response to additional antigen exposures (mRNA vaccine).

(1/2) Our paper describing the serum antibody repertoire in response to a malaria vaccine is online!
This paper was important for different reasons:
a) We used for the first time antigen-specific single B cells to identify serum immunoglobulin peptides;
That's it! I have my first senior author manuscript, describing antibody responses to P. vivax in two different transmission areas in Brazil and Cambodia.
A special thanks goes to my mentor that never gets tired of empowering me!
@WiParasitology
Breaking News: Brazil has ousted President Jair Bolsonaro, rebuking the far-right incumbent and electing Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a former leftist leader known as Lula.
Our latest study is now online.
We compared the human antibody repertoire between malaria vaccines adjuvanted with Alhydrogel or AS01.
Thanks to my PhD student
@Vishal_N_Rao
for helping with the analyses and
@skleinstein
@fanofactor
for an awesome collab👇🏼
@PrakashLab
my mother in Brazil just texted "Have you seen this?" along with a video where you and the microscope generated by your group are introduced! She does not speak English, she is not a scientist - Democratization of Science, folks. Believe in its power!
This was a program that I used to run solo for several years now, but the entire lab is excited to join me on this initiative!!! Please let someone you know who could be interested, but remember to check the guidelines on our website [2].
To the academic females of my generation (postdocs/PhD students): We should be in a real PARTNERship in home. Stop cooking more than him, stop cleaning more than him, stop making his life easier if yours is left behind. It’s 2020. Aim for 50/50 and do not accept less than this!
Over the last 6 years, the proportion of 1st author pubs by women have slowly increased, but COVID-19 disruptions have severely and differentially impacted women.
Tenure committees MUST be aware of this and take it into account in the future.

OMG, a Biorender hater! I love it very much, and use it at every opportunity I can :).
And it's a women-owned initiative, so I love it even more!
I absolutely love my team; there is so much going on right now but everyone is there giving literally their best. This is exactly what I wanted most as a PI, every single member of the team being absolutely passionate about their projects.
I don't need anything else right now!
I have had a folder on my computer since 2019 named "When I become a PI" with a lot of resources, funding opportunities, and project ideas. It's time to press PLAY! I'll need a research tech, so if you know someone w/passion and a bit of knowledge of cell culture... (10/11)
Beautiful and sunny day to present my R01 Specific Aims page to my department and get (super great) feedback.
I chose Sinai because of the combination of good science and good people and everyday I am grateful to the mentorship of my senior colleagues.
A🍺 afterwards, of course.
Back at the🛩️, as I need to finish our lab R01 proposal, but I am so grateful to
#AAI2024
for the Early Career Faculty Travel Award and the opportunity to connect with amazing researchers and discuss our science.
The next one is the
@Els_Vaccine
conference in🇵🇹! Looking forward.
Submitting my first R01 + a U19 with
@florian_krammer
for the same deadline.
This tweet is to formalize that I am accepting recommendations of Upper East Side bars open at 5pm on June 5th.
Young researcher, BUT old enough to open a grant application from 3 years ago and realize "OMG did I write this? Look at those figures of course I didn't get this grant OMG!"
Beautiful thing about academia is that professional evolution is constant - and fast.
Our new paper, which we had the privilege to write with
@PeterHotez
and Rino Rappuoli is on line now. Transmission-Blocking Vaccines for Malaria: Time to Talk about Vaccine Introduction: Trends in Parasitology
After my rotations, I’m thrilled to begin my journey as a PhD student in
@camilahcoelho
’s lab
@IcahnMountSinai
where I will be studying B cell responses to viral infections and vaccines. Exciting times ahead!🦠💉
