Society grants for postdocs are 90% awarded to HHMI labs or well-funded investigators' labs. It's hard to break this cycle if the people reviewing the grants keep selecting those who don't need the money, while awarding postdocs who will likely receive federal funding anyway.

Packing up my desk today and after 5 years of Duffy lab, I am leaving NIH. It breaks my heart and I'll miss my lab friends and "my students", but new great things are waiting for me in San Diego. And yes, the idea of running on the beach after a long day of work blows my mind!

Rebeca Andrade has won a total of 14 Olympic and World medals and is the most decorated Latin American gymnast of all times. Her mother cleans houses and has seven kids. Her brother used to take her by bike to the practices because they didn't have money for the 🚌.
Amazing.
I don’t think people realize how incredible Rebeca Andrade’s story is…
Born in a favela, walked two hours each way for gymnastics practice & has overcome THREE ACL tears.
There’s also barely any funding in Brazil for gymnastics.

To the academic females of my generation (postdocs/PhD students): We should be in a real PARTNERship in home. Stop cooking more than him, stop cleaning more than him, stop making his life easier if yours is left behind. It’s 2020. Aim for 50/50 and do not accept less than this!
Over the last 6 years, the proportion of 1st author pubs by women have slowly increased, but COVID-19 disruptions have severely and differentially impacted women.
Tenure committees MUST be aware of this and take it into account in the future.
