@Nucleocapsoid @RobertPdeVries1 @PNASNews HIV-1 has even fewer, but still fuses. I think if you have 2 ‘active’ trimers close enough to each other, that’s it - hemifusion. Here’s this one for flavis:

@RobertPdeVries1 I would think that this is why the lateral patch epitope is so conserved. Prior to this paper we could come with any functional significance for it to be conserved.
