I read Alan Sugar's book. He spoke about his old mum. He made sure she never did without, nice flat, clothes, food, flowers - but sadly not his time. He was always busy. After she died he felt guilty and realised that all she ever wanted was time with her son. Not gifts.

My Dad was an engineer in the Navy. 60 yrs later he had dementia & was in a care home which he thought was his ship. He told me that that he had re-wired the whole ship & hadn’t been paid. & He pointed to the other residents & said “Look at this lot! They’re no bloody help!”

On trains I have seen- someone have their bag stolen,someone having a seizure,someone with mental health problems asleep under a seat, someone who had collapsed in the toilet & someone who had slashed his wrist.All needed a Guard to intervene.None could be assisted by the driver!

When Mum went into hospital for the final time, I stayed in her empty flat. I told her that I would tidy up and keep it clean. It made her angry. 'Leave the cleaning! I've wasted too much of my life cleaning!'

We looked out of his window &some of the trees in the garden has been felled, & all now lying on ground.
