This right here is the most memorable souls moment for me. It involves no traditional combat encounter, yet it engages you and forces you to think like you are actually there. I am convinced 70% of souls players would decry this as gimmicky if it was in a modern FromSoft game

So anything that doesnt move at snails pace is "spam" to you? If you paid attention, you would see my HP bar was almost deleted the moment I stopped applying pressure, this is from normal mobs too. THAT is actual combat, not slow ass rhythm game

The reason why Dantes royal guard is different than the modern "parry" action games seem to be obsessed with, is because Dantes RG does not influence the enemy, it just absorbs the hit and nullifies it. Meaning enemies can still continue their string after you block the first hit

The first room in DMC1 is fascinating design. The room is essentially a tutorial for the movement, run around, climb collect the orbs to proceed. replays would find a tutorial like that tedious, so if you jump up on the horse statue you immediately get the orbs you need.

The spider ninjas actually have 3 combos that each do different things. 2 default grabs, and another grab that depends on which limb is missing. Again, the camera atleast moves unlike souls where you have to manually move it or lock on, ofc thats okay at that speed :)

Souls games are not hard, I have beat each one released so far, with no magic involved. These games are not difficult in any way,they are a exercise in patience since the whole loop is Roll(parry in Sekiro) 3 telegraphed attack->Hit 2 times until infinity.

Stylish Action is surely a better name for the genre than 3D Beat em up. Attaching subjectivity to a genre name is a great idea! Its why Shmups are called "Plane flying shooters" and not Shoot em ups :)

PS2 is the only console that can try to rival PC in terms of library of quality games. We will never see a single console dominate a market like this ever again, you can probably play just PS2 games for most of your adult life and still find more good ones

How come out of 80 years of gaming history the "greatest *insert genre* game of all time" always manages to be released within the last 5 years?? Something doesn't add up

God of war had a camera system so great, that it enabled 8 direction dodging independent of movement direction,camera with full visibility of the fights, and freed up a button.
And then literally nobody stole the idea and even the GOW devs went with an over the shoulder cam :)

I remember when I first tried to get into Ninja Gaiden I was so frustrated Ryu didn't move like Dante. Then a year later I randomly booted it up, locked In, and it became one of my favs. Preconceived notions and assumptions are the enemy of enjoyment

Showing developers who advocate for "quiet time" that the players can pause the game and walk outside:
Itd be a fun experiment to sit down the players & devs defending "quiet time" and have them do some no death/no damage/score or speed runs for a couple of months with no dev/external tools like fast forward. Just 2 check if their defense is sincere or the result of ignorance

Wow after 5 games you can finally jump and only sometimes (depending on your weapon type, strength level, and whenever "Poise armor" allows it) can you meaningfully interact with a boss instead of roll roll roll. Maybe after another 5 games we can expect more than one combo?

Hell antenora are probably the best single enemy design in DMC5 that is not a callback enemy. I think it's awesome how it tests the players ability to chain damage together without knock back, with a lot of skill expression. And punishes players spamming "get away from me" moves
