I'd like to thank Summers for this pioneering work in casual inference. I predict this new method will really take macro by storm, b/c the assumptions are much less restrictive than the standard causal inference. Really has potential to bring the credibility revolution to macro.

Teacher here: If I called the police everytime students didn't do what I asked them, I wouldn't get past day one, because everyone would be arrested for not reading the syllabus. Dealing with "non-compliant" students is literally the job, and doesn't require using force.

I got thrown out of highschool in TX at 14. Tenured professor by 37. Thanks soo much for all the folks and institutions that helped me on my path. Too many to list here.
I got an F on my midterm in Korean History taught by a Japanese history professor at Yale. He said Asians were Math and Science majors. I was majoring in History. I wrote a novel called “Pachinko” which is now taught in Japanese history classes, as well as other disciplines.

I second this 💯💯💯. I was on a hiring committee in a dept at a liberal arts school/R2 for 3/6 years I worked there. We took cover letters seriously. While the typical canned cover letter coming out of top departments didn't immediately disqualify someone...
JMCs: this is bad advice outside the top schools. Here in the minor leagues, hiring committees want to know why you're interested in the position and if you're really willing to take the job. Credible signals in your cover letter help.

Teacher here: If the principle you're standing behind is that students should be arrested for not following my directions, then we wouldn't get past day one, because all students would be arrested for not reading the syllabus. Handling kids saying no is a big part of the job.

If you get a chance, its worth checking out the economic history in Marshall's principals. The scientific racism in econ in that is jaw dropping (filled with cold climate references), but tbh I think the underlying ideas are still implicit in much of the profession.
