Did you know #beaver wetlands are #wildfire resistant? This string of beaver ponds stayed green during the 2020 Mullen Fire in WY while the surrounding area burned heavily. We visited the site recently and it's still full of fish, beavers, bears, birds, and more! Thanks, beavs.

Incredibly grim. The core functions of the state continue to be hollowed out while the warmaking functions grow like a steroidal tumor. Death throes of a barbaric empire

RIP forest service. all seasonal hiring for 2025 is off, and in at least one region (my old one) even seasonal positions paid by outside funding sources are cancelled too

Glad to hear there are a handful. I will say that a lot of people are posting places that are just food courts with a couple of random vendors; that’s not a farmers market. A handful of others are in repurposed rail stations, which is just depressing; we should have trains

Bring back the dovecote! These low tech, passive structures housed pigeons or doves, and provided their owners with eggs, feathers, dung, & meat. With no direct inputs, they yielded food, insulation, fertilizer, & even the raw material for gunpowder This is sustainable tech

A synthetic nitrogen fertilizer spill just annihilated all aquatic life—fish, frogs, snakes, mussels, earthworms—on a 60-mile(!) stretch of river in Iowa There is no “green” version of this. “Clean” energy doesn’t fix it. Industrial agriculture is incompatible w/ life on Earth

Part of why people struggle to imagine non-industrial systems feeding the world is that they’ve only ever experienced a denuded planet ravaged by colonial extractivism Life used to be so abundant you’d literally trip over it anywhere you went We can have that again

An industrial farm is just an open air nutrient mine, with all the same negative externalities created by any industrial mining operation: cancer, energy waste, toxic run-off, air pollution, biodiversity loss, soil contamination, etc. And to top it all off, the food sucks

Planted American groundnuts today. They’re a native, nitrogen-fixing legume that yields edible tubers & beans Ironically, despite being a pre-colonization staple in North America, the only place it’s grown commercially today is Japan. Doing my part to correct that!

Some people are really struggling with this, so I’ll break it down for you Herbicide is a replacement for labor. The trade-off is that it fucks up your health & the environment. That’s a bad trade-off, but it’s one that a lotta people make out of laziness, greed, or ignorance

Study confirms the fairly obvious: growing wildflower strips around fruit tree orchards leads to a large reduction in insect damage Important detail: the closer the trees were to the flowers, the less damage they received So do it the permaculture way: plant guilds, not strips

I’ve had a few people on here tell me that food forests are “gimmicks” They are, in fact, the opposite: they’ve been successfully feeding human populations for a long, long time & they can persist for at least 150 years w/o maintenance

Pains me to say anything nice about Vox, but props to them for this series Industrial animal agriculture is an abomination. It’s a profound moral failure, a never-ending public health crisis, and a massive ecological catastrophe, all in one. Factory farms shouldn’t exist

Factory farming is bad for our planet, for animals, and for us. There's a better way. This week, we're launching a package of stories that we hope will challenge policy leaders and the public to imagine a kinder, saner, and truly sustainable food system:
